Chapter 122 - Chapter 122: Raikou

Chapter 122: Raikou

"Ludicolo is unable to battle! The Riverton Gym Leader will now send out her third Pokémon!"

"Ding! LV.42 Bellossom successfully defeated LV.66 Ludicolo! Received 34,000 Gold!!"

"Ding!! Spoils of War triggered!! Congratulations, Host, for receiving an additional reward: 5,000 Gold!!!"

Boosted by the unreserved power of Solar Power, several consecutive Solar Beams were too much even for a Ludicolo with a base Special Defense of 100.

The good news: Bellossom's Sunny Day had been broken.

The bad news: her strongest Pokémon, Ludicolo, was out of the fight.

The only one left was a Gastrodon with a 4x weakness to Grass.

"This is the Riverton Gym Badge. You're strong. Stronger than Old He said," Marina praised Kenji without hesitation, opening her hand to reveal the Riverton Gym Badge.

"Yay!! Big Brother Kenji is awesome!"

Johnny, acting as a very competent hype man, cheered happily from the sidelines.

"Thank you, Gym Leader Marina," Kenji accepted the badge with both hands.

...

As a breeder, Wesley was naturally very interested in how Kenji had raised a Bellossom like that. He pulled Kenji aside to chat over tea.

Kenji, intending to learn more about the Legendary Pokémon from Marina, was happy to stay.

"Gym Leader Marina, has there been any progress regarding the frequent abnormal weather in Jinling City recently?" Kenji asked tentatively.

Marina frowned slightly. It wasn't directed at Kenji, but rather a sign of the frustration that had been plaguing her.

"With the assistance of high-level investigators and researchers dispatched by the League, Jinling City's weather will return to normal soon," Marina replied with a smile, shaking off her worry.

"Then... have you found out what's causing the abnormal weather? Is it really because a Legendary Pokémon has appeared?" Kenji asked, his voice thick with anticipation.

Marina hesitated. Considering Kenji's status, she finally nodded. "Yes. The recent abnormal weather is indeed caused by a Legendary Pokémon lingering near Jinling City."

"Then... which Legendary is it?" Kenji's eyes lit up. His heart pounded as he pressed on.

"Raikou," Marina said slowly.

Although Kenji had anticipated the Legendary's identity, getting a definitive answer still made his heart race.

Raikou. Along with Suicune and Entei, they were known as the Legendary Beasts. Legend has it they were originally three unknown Pokémon who perished in the burning Brass Tower, but were resurrected by Ho-Oh and granted powerful abilities.

Since then, the Legendary Beasts have roamed the world, also known as Ho-Oh's guards.

It was unknown if this Raikou lingering near Jinling City was the same one resurrected by Ho-Oh in the Burned Tower.

Though the possibility was slim.

Raikou, the Electric-type Legendary Pokémon. It has a yellow body, sharp fangs, an X-shaped whisker on its face, and carries a rain cloud on its back.

It is precisely because of the rain cloud on its back that Raikou can use the power of lightning anytime, anywhere, and its presence is often accompanied by thunderstorms.

"Why? Are you interested in Legendary Pokémon?"

Noticing the anticipation in Kenji's eyes, Marina asked.

Kenji nodded. "Yes, Gym Leader Marina. Judging by your expression earlier, have you run into some trouble with the investigation? I'd like to do my part."

Marina's expression became serious. "Kenji, Legendary Pokémon are far more dangerous than you imagine. Unless absolutely necessary, we try not to provoke them. And with your current strength, you're not enough to face a Legendary."

"How about this, Gym Leader Marina? Let's have a 1v1 battle. If I win, you agree to let me come with you. If I lose..." Kenji paused.

"If I lose, I will gift you an S-Rank potential Bug-type Pokémon in the future."

Marina's jaw dropped. Even as a Provincial Gym Leader, she was stunned by Kenji's offer.

Marina was tempted. As a mother, she naturally knew her son's dream was to become a Bug-type specialist.

"Deal!" After hesitating for a moment, Marina nodded.

She didn't doubt Kenji's promise.

After all, Johnny was still young. With the talent Kenji was displaying now, by the time Johnny grew up to be a trainer, Kenji should have become the National League Champion.

Seeing Marina agree, Kenji rejoiced. He had some knowledge of Marina's main team and their strength.

The three of them walked into the battle arena once again.

Wesley again took on the role of referee.

"Go! Beedrill!!"

"Go!! Kabutops!!"

"KABU!!!—"

A red light flew into the arena, revealing a brown-shelled Pokémon with scythe-like arms.

Kenji was slightly surprised. He hadn't expected Marina to send out Kabutops.

From what Kenji knew, Marina's ace was a Poliwrath that had reached the Champion-level.

It was also the only Pokémon in Marina's main team with Champion-level potential.
