Chapter 204: Kenji vs. Mankey
After catching the Shiny Roselia, Chen Tuohai was the first to leave the Imperial Breeding Center.
Kenji and Xie Mu, however, weren't in a hurry. They continued to scour the massive sanctuary with patience.
Another hour passed. Amidst Xie Mu's excited cheers, another Pokémon was captured.
It was a Slowpoke.
The Slowpoke had an incredibly "wise" expression (read: vacant). Its body was pink and chubby, somewhat resembling a hippo. Its eyes were 99% white, with tiny pupils that looked like small black dots.
When Kenji and Xie Mu found it, it was lounging by the river, casually gnawing on its own tail.
As for why it was eating its own tail...
Perhaps not even Slowpoke knew the answer.
Slowpoke, as the name suggested, was a Pokémon that spent the vast majority of its day zoning out. Its reaction time was notoriously slow.
Even if you slapped it across the face, it would take a full five seconds for the pain signal to reach its brain.
Although it seemed incredibly dopey, maybe there was wisdom in its stupidity. Slowpoke possessed the Psychic type, after all.
It had two evolutionary paths. One was leveling up to Level 37, where a Shellder would bite its tail, triggering evolution into Slowbro.
The other involved using a King's Rock, causing it to evolve into Slowking.
In the games of his past life, Slowpoke just needed to reach Level 37 to become Slowbro.
But in this world, it wasn't that simple.
Not only did it need to reach Level 37, but a Shellder also had to clamp onto its tail. Under the influence of the evolution energy, the Shellder would transform into a spiral shell attached firmly to the tail, becoming a symbiotic partner as they evolved together into Slowbro.
It was said that if the shell on a Slowbro's tail was forcibly removed, the Pokémon would devolve back into a Slowpoke.
...
Xie Mu's special ability allowed him to sense a Pokémon's potential to some degree.
Although not precise, Xie Mu felt strongly that this Slowpoke had immense potential.
His intuition was correct.
This Slowpoke also had S- Potential.
Satisfied with his catch, Xie Mu left the Breeding Center as well.
Now, only Kenji remained.
...
BANG!!! —
"Mankey!!! Mankey!!! —"
In front of a large boulder, a round, pig-nosed Pokémon that was essentially just a head with limbs was screaming as it furiously hammered the stone with its fists.
Not far away, Kenji watched quietly.
[Mankey]
Gender: Male
Level: 8
Type: Fighting
Ability: Defiant
Potential: S
Mankey!! An extremely violent Pokémon that would fly into a rage at the slightest provocation.
Kenji had been observing this Mankey for a while now. For the past ten minutes, he had watched it pick a fight with a rock.
An Level 8 Mankey had a little bit of combat power, but smashing a boulder of that size with bare fists was basically impossible.
Bam... Bam... Bam...
The Mankey seemed impervious to pain. It punched the stone again and again, showing no intention of stopping.
One punch. Another punch. And another.
Twenty minutes passed...
The stone still hadn't cracked.
Through observation, Kenji had figured out this Mankey's personality. Short-tempered, stubborn as a mule, and incredibly tough.
A Pokémon like this would be extremely difficult to tame.
Kenji silently formulated a plan in his mind.
...
A moment later, Kenji made his decision and slowly walked toward the Mankey.
"Mankey?"
Kenji made no attempt to hide his footsteps. The moment he got close, Mankey spotted him.
Seeing he was discovered, Kenji shook the Poké Ball in his hand. "Battle me. If you lose, you become my Pokémon. Deal?"
"Mankey!!! —"
Before Kenji even finished speaking, Mankey's eyes narrowed. In the next second, it charged straight at him.
Kenji wasn't exactly a powerhouse himself, but the Mankey was only Level 8. Plus, it had exhausted nearly all its stamina punching the rock. It could barely stand, let alone fight a human.
So, facing the charging monkey, Kenji didn't hold back. He unleashed his signature move: The Kenji Flail.
Mankey was stubborn, too. It tanked Kenji's chaotic punches just to land a hit.
Man and monkey traded blows. But within moments, Kenji had the Mankey pinned to the ground.
Straddling the Mankey, Kenji rained open-palm slaps onto its head, shouting as he hit, "Since you attacked, I'm taking that as a 'Yes'! You lost, so pay up! A bet is a bet!"
With that, Kenji slammed the Poké Ball onto Mankey's forehead.
The knocked-out Mankey turned into a stream of red light and was sucked inside.
Wiggle... Wiggle...
Click!
The ball stopped moving.
Success!!
Kenji grinned, picking up the ball and stuffing it into his pocket.
Nearby, the staff escort's mouth twitched. He looked at Kenji with a bizarre expression.
In all his years working here, this was the first time he had ever seen a trainer physically fight a Pokémon to catch it.
Kenji had his reasons for fighting personally.
Compared to having his overpowered team crush the little Mankey, defeating it with his own hands was more likely to earn the stubborn monkey's respect.
As for whether Mankey would blame him for taking advantage of its exhaustion?
Kenji figured that with Mankey's one-track mind, it probably wouldn't think that far ahead.
It was just an experiment. Even if Mankey was still defiant later, Kenji could take his time training it.
