Chapter 366: Mega Froslass
Both Pokémon crashed to the ground almost simultaneously.
A heavy silence fell over the arena as the crowd leaned forward, their eyes straining through the settling frost to see who had survived the explosion.
For a long moment, neither moved. Then, Machamp's body twitched. Groaning in agony, it slowly pushed itself upright, its muscular frame shaking with the effort.
But the sight of the victor was tragic. Machamp was covered in deep frostbite and bloody gashes. Its four legendary arms, its pride and joy, now hung limp and useless at its sides.
The recoil from its own ultimate move had been devastating, but combining that with the impact of a Sheer Cold-boosted Aqua Jet had effectively shattered its skeletal structure. It couldn't even raise a hand to wipe the sweat from its eyes.
Yet, as broken as Machamp was, it was still conscious. On the other side of the crater, Beartic lay completely still.
"Beartic is unable to battle! Machamp wins the round!!"
The referee made the call only after Beartic failed to respond to its trainer's voice.
"Return, Beartic."
"Return, Machamp."
Li Xisheng recalled his partner immediately. Despite the win, Machamp was a spent force; it wouldn't be able to throw another punch for weeks, let alone minutes.
At this point, Rainey Chang was down to her final two: her weather-setter, Alolan Ninetales, and her absolute Ace, Froslass.
Li Xisheng still held a massive advantage, with three Pokémon remaining in fighting condition.
Rainey looked at Li with a new sense of respect. During their previous duel, his Machamp hadn't possessed that "World-Ending" combo. He had clearly developed it specifically to counter her defensive style. It had been a perfect ambush.
However, being an Elite Four member meant being a master of the comeback.
The match resumed. Rainey's Alolan Ninetales returned to the field to maintain the snow, but its raw combat power was inferior to the previous bear. Li Xisheng sent out his fourth partner, Mienshao, who utilized its superior speed and Fighting-type STAB to systematically dismantle the fox.
With Alolan Ninetales down, Rainey was down to her final card.
The regional masters on the platform leaned in. This was it.
Rainey took a deep breath, clutching the ball at the center of her belt. She raised it high. "Show them the beauty of the eternal frost! Froslass!!"
"Yooooo..."
A streak of red light hit the snowy field. Froslass appeared, floating gracefully above the ground.
Rainey didn't waste time. She immediately triggered her Mega Stone.
"Froslass!! Mega Evolve!!!"
"YOOO-HUUUU!!!! —"
Prismatic light erupted, coiling around the Snow Land Pokémon like a frozen ribbon.
Li Xisheng's expression was grim. He remembered this form all too well. Three years ago, this was the wall he had failed to climb.
The light expanded, then shattered like a sheet of ice hitting the floor.
Mega Froslass had arrived.
The base form was relatively small, barely half the height of a human. But in its Mega state, its size had tripled. It now stood over two meters tall, a majestic and terrifying specter of the frozen wastes. A pair of elegant horns made of True Ice protruded from its head, and its kimono-like body had elongated into a flowing, ethereal gown.
Beneath the hem of its dress, waves of freezing white mist began to roll outward, turning the arena floor into a zero-visibility zone.
"Brrr... it's freezing."
In the VIP stands, Kenji involuntarily shivered.
The temperature in the entire Phoenix Nest seemed to drop ten degrees in a single second. This wasn't the psychological, soul-chilling cold of Grandma Liu's Gengar; this was a pure, physical, thermodynamic freeze.
Mega Froslass possessed the ability to constantly vent spectral frost from its core. Legend had it that the mist was so cold it could freeze intangible concepts like wind or fire solid.
"Yoooo..." Mega Froslass let out a haunting, melodic cry.
Suddenly, a violent storm erupted.
Blizzard!!!
Under the Snow Warning left by the previous Ninetales, the Blizzard's accuracy was perfect. It was a localized hurricane of ice and death.
Mienshao tried to find an opening, but the storm was total. There was no gap to slip through, no shelter to find. Within seconds, the martial arts weasel was buried in white.
CLANG!!! —
The storm ceased. In the center of the field, Mienshao remained in a standing combat pose. But it wasn't moving. A thick, crystalline layer of ice had encased its entire body, turning it into a translucent statue.
Frozen Solid!!!
The sheer intensity of Mega Froslass's frost had bypassed the standard RNG. It hadn't just knocked Mienshao out; it had turned it into a relic.
"Mienshao is unable to battle! Froslass wins the round!"
Even though she was down to one Pokémon, Li Xisheng dared not relax. He recalled his frozen partner and released his fifth: Sirfetch'd.
He was sticking to his plan: wear down the Mega Ace as much as possible before sending in Gallade for the final strike.

In this world, the species was rare and highly respected. Evolution occurred only after a Farfetch'd survived a series of near-death battles, showing the kind of indomitable will that mirrored the evolution of Annihilape.
Only a tiny fraction of the population ever achieved this knightly form. Sirfetch'd was the embodiment of the warrior's path—brave, stoic, and lethal with its massive leek lance.
