Chapter 388: An Unusual Mega Evolution
Matsuma quickly moved to dispel Kenji's concerns.
He raised a hand and performed an elegant, measured snap of his fingers.
Vrummm...
Instantly, a secondary, shimmering barrier draped itself over the arena floor.
It pulsed with a familiar psychic frequency. Behind Kenji, Darkrai tensed,
sensing a residue of Mewtwo's signature in the shield.
"This barrier was constructed using a fragment of Mewtwo's power before its...
unfortunate departure," Matsuma explained. "It is rated to withstand a
Master-rank bombardment. We can speak freely—and fight freely."
Kenji looked at Matsuma but said nothing.
He didn't have time. The match had already begun.
Matsuma's Beedrill struck first. Clad in its dark, obsidian energy, the Dark
Mega form lunged forward, leading with a Fell Stinger.
So fast!!!
Kenji's eyes widened. The speed of the Dark Mega was astronomical. While not
quite "surpassing" his own partner, the two insects were now effectively matched
in velocity.
Kenji's Mega Beedrill didn't attempt to tank the strike. It performed a high-G
bank to the side, letting the stinger pass through its silhouette, and countered
with a point-blank Pin Missile.
BANG BANG BANG!!! —
Matsuma's black bee reacted with its own counter-assault. It used a Sludge Bomb
not as a ranged attack, but as a point-blank reactive shield. The corrosive,
purple liquid incinerated the incoming needles mid-air. Before the smoke could
clear, it lunged again with a second lance.
Kenji had no choice but to engage. He ordered a direct trade.
CLANG!!! —
Stingers collided.
In the next heartbeat, Kenji's heart skipped. His partner's arm was physically
knocked aside, forced open by the sheer kinetic weight of the dark bee's strike.
Kenji was in disbelief. They were both Mega Evolved. His Mega Beedrill possessed
the Huge Power ability. Logically, he should have the physical advantage.
What kind of cursed energy is fueling that thing?!
Realizing he was being overpowered in raw trades, Kenji ordered Beedrill to
transition into a hit-and-run pattern.
But Matsuma's Beedrill had entered a state of berserk frenzy. It became a
whirlwind of black and red, its five stingers striking from a dozen different
angles simultaneously.
The two Pokémon became a blur of ten lances trading hundreds of blows every
second. It was a battle of absolute focus. A single failed parry meant instant
defeat. There was no room for flashy moves—only a gritty, point-blank brawl that
made the air in the room scream.
BAM!!! —
The stalemate broke. Kenji's partner, pinned against the defensive wall, finally
slipped. A lance caught its shoulder.
"SIII!!!"
Mega Beedrill let out an instinctive cry of pain as its rhythm was shattered.
Seizing the opening, the dark bee delivered a crushing blow that sent the golden
insect rocketing toward the floor.
CRASH!!! —
Mega Beedrill slammed into the dirt with enough force to crater the reinforced
arena. Dust and sand filled the air.
SWISH SWISH SWISH!! —
But before two seconds had passed, the golden blur tore through the dust cloud,
ascending back toward its rival at terminal velocity.
Kenji's partner had tucked its limbs, spinning its entire body into a high-RPM
drill.
ULTIMATE POISON DRILL!!
Kenji had ordered Outrage. His partner was now operating at its absolute peak,
its aura burning with a violent intensity.
Above, Matsuma's black bee looked genuinely surprised. It had expected its
opponent to be crippled. It hadn't accounted for the Radiant Edge of Night.
Protected by the invulnerability shield, Kenji's Mega Beedrill had ignored the
damage from the fall and launched an immediate counter-counter-engage.
The dark bee didn't use Protect. It was too far gone into its own bloodlust. It
met the drill with its own killing blow: it crossed its two primary lances and
uncoiled its three abdomen stingers in a lethal forward thrust.
Poison Point Barrage!!!!
KRA-KOOM!!!!! —
The purple poison drill met the cross-cut of black energy.
Both trainers stared into the heart of the explosion.
BANG!!!! —
Finally, the victor emerged. While the black bee had the advantage in raw
weight, its lack of preparation time proved fatal. Kenji's drill punched through
the guard, driving the dark insect out of the air and slamming it into the
ground.
Kenji's Mega Beedrill hovered above, protected by its gear. The dark bee,
however, possessed no such luxury.
As it hit the floor, its dark aura flickered and dimmed. Its eyes remained red
with fury, but its physical form was shivering.
Clap. Clap. Clap.
Kenji tensed, looking at Matsuma.
The man was slowly, calmly clapping.
"Exquisite," Matsuma said. "Congratulations, Kenji. You have officially cleared
the 100th floor of the Battle Tower."
Kenji blinked, confused. Is that... a surrender?
Matsuma looked at his fallen partner. "That's enough, Beedrill. The point has
been made. There is no reason to continue this to the end."
The black Mega Beedrill looked conflicted. For a split second, it actually
seemed to consider disobeying Matsuma, its bloodlust overriding the link.
Matsuma noticed. His expression didn't change, but he reached for his cufflink
and pressed the button.
A flash of red light enveloped the dark bee as the Mega Evolution was forcibly
dissolved.
With a low whine, the Pokémon reverted to its base form. It looked utterly
spent—far more exhausted than a standard Mega Evolution usually left a
Pokémon. It swayed in mid-air, barely able to maintain its altitude.
Seeing the threat neutralized, Kenji also signaled his partner to revert,
choosing to conserve energy.
Battle over.
Matsuma didn't wait. He walked across the field toward Kenji with total
confidence, seemingly unbothered by the three legends guarding the boy.
Darkrai and Ninetales bared their teeth, but Matsuma didn't even slow down. He
stopped directly in front of Kenji, reached down to his sleeve, and pulled the
Mega Stone off his cufflink.
He held it out to Kenji.
