Chapter 420: There are Tiers Even Among Gods
The seconds ticked by like a countdown to an explosion. Above the valley, the
Thunder God's Arena finally locked into place, sealing Electivire and Zapdos
within a shimmering, high-voltage pocket dimension.
In this space, the two clashed for the final time.
On paper, Zapdos—a dual Electric and Flying-type—had no inherent immunity to Electric moves. But in reality, it was a God. As the warden of the storm,
standard Electric-type attacks usually slid off its metallic feathers like water
off a duck's back.
However, within the Thunder God's Arena, the rules changed. Electivire was the sovereign of this space. Its Thunder Armor surged with divine intensity, fueled by the localized dimension. For a few breathtaking minutes, the Level 82
Electivire actually managed to suppress the Level 99 Zapdos, raining down a
barrage of physically-enhanced strikes.
Zapdos was not built for close-quarters brawling, but it was still a peak-tier
Champion. It endured the assault, its eyes flashing with ancient fury. The Arena
couldn't last forever.
As Electivire's energy finally began to wane, Zapdos seized the opening. It let
out a piercing shriek and unleashed a Hurricane.
In the sky, the wind didn't just spin—it ignited. The Hurricane collided with
the remaining storm clouds, transforming into a terrifying, pitch-black tornado
of lightning and wind. The friction between the gale and the thunderous clouds
created a feedback loop of exploding sparks.
BOOM!
Under the crushing pressure of the Hurricane, the Thunder God's Arena shattered
like glass. Electivire was sent flying, crashing hard against the valley floor.
Its Thunder Armor flickered and died, and its breathing was ragged. It had
reached its absolute limit.
"Come back, Electivire."
Kenji raised his Poké Ball, recalling his partner. Electivire had failed the
"one-versus-six" sweep, but what it had accomplished was nothing short of
legendary. It had single-handedly dismantled five of an Elite Four's primary
team and forced their God-tier ace to its limit. That was more than enough.
"I'm finishing this. Go! Darkrai!"
To face a God, Kenji chose a God of his own.
Yuna Su's expression tightened. She had seen Darkrai in action during the Huaxia
League Grand Finals. Back then, it had faced Xun Zhurong's Houndoom—a creature
blessed by Ho-Oh that fought with the power of a Lesser Legendary. Even that
hadn't been enough to stop the Nightmare.
With Kenji's terrifying growth rate over the last six months, she knew Darkrai
would be a much more monstrous opponent today.
She was right.
The moment the red light cleared, Darkrai drifted in mid-air. It didn't move a
muscle, but the space beneath its wispy form began to ripple like a dark pond.
The Dark Void field manifested instantly. Darkrai didn't just stand in the
arena; it floated over an abyss of pure shadow.
Above, Zapdos let out a cry, but for the first time in its long life, a cold,
primal fear began to take root in its heart. It was a sensation it hadn't felt
even when facing the Zhurong clan's strongest fire-starters. This was a fear of
the unknown—of an ending.
"Zapdos! Thunder!"
"SKREEEEE!"
Zapdos flared its wings, and a massive pillar of heavenly lightning descended,
aimed directly at the nightmare below.
Darkrai didn't even bother to dodge.
THOOM!
A wave of Dark Pulse erupted from the Dark Void beneath Darkrai, meeting the
lightning head-on. The two forces collided in a violent explosion of purple and
gold. When the smoke cleared, Darkrai was still there, the black mist around its
body barely disturbed.
SWISH-SWISH-SWISH!
Suddenly, dozens of shadowy tentacles erupted from the Dark Void, lashing out
toward the sky like vipers.
Zapdos's eyes went wide. It banked into a high-speed climb, desperately trying
to outfly the grasping shadows. It was like a cat fleeing a predator; every inch
the tentacles gained made the bird's internal panic spike.
On paper, Zapdos was Level 99—the pinnacle of the world. Darkrai was only
Level 89.
Yet, the Level 99 Legendary was being hunted like prey.
For some reason—perhaps due to its unique Mythical nature—Darkrai's level
progression was agonizingly slow. In six months, it had only reached Level 89
and had been stuck there for weeks.
But Level was a lie when it came to the Nightmare God.
Every single level Darkrai gained felt like two or three levels on a standard
Pokémon. It was born as a Mythical entity, a ruler of the dream world. Even at
Level 89, its raw power output eclipsed every other Pokémon on Kenji's team
except for his Mega Beedrill.
When Darkrai eventually stepped into the Champion Tier, Kenji couldn't even
fathom what it would be capable of. For now, an 89-level Nightmare God facing
a 99-level Lesser Legendary was like a father disciplining a disobedient child.
In the world of Pokémon, there were tiers even among the Gods. And Darkrai stood at the top.
