Chapter 502: The System
Satsuki lowered her head. Naruto could not read her expression.
But he could see her body trembling, just slightly -- something enormous turning over inside her, pressing against its own walls, fighting to get out.
Those words. "Mine." "Permanently." They had entered her like a key cut to fit the deepest lock in her chest.
She wanted him to be hers.
She wanted him to be hers permanently.
She was Uchiha. She was a person who had always valued her feelings above her life, in the specific and absolute way that was distinctly Uchiha. She was Uchiha Satsuki, and she understood with perfect clarity exactly how consuming and compulsive and frightening her feelings were. She had been afraid -- genuinely afraid -- that Naruto would not be able to accept that version of her.
And now he had told her: I am yours. Permanently.
Those words filled something in Satsuki's chest at a depth that "happy" or "moved" could not reach. This was not ordinary emotion. This was being packed completely full -- from the level of thought all the way down to the level of feeling.
So moved. And then that feeling immediately converted into something else.
Love.
And for Uchiha Satsuki, love had never been something that could sit quietly inside her and be savored slowly.
Love needed release.
It needed to be expressed in the most complete way possible. To assert possession. Through an embrace, through a kiss, through something deeper and more total -- something that let her feel, with her whole body, that he was hers.
What Naruto did not realize was that if he kept talking, Satsuki was going to launch herself at him and start on his neck.
He was thinking about something else.
Satsuki has really opened everything up to me. The recognition of it sent warmth moving through him.
And she had. The behavior she had just confessed to -- the collected clothing, the covert photographs, the camera hidden in a toy's eyes -- had not produced even a trace of fear in Naruto.
What it had produced was something more like understanding.
Because Naruto, too, had grown up starved of affection. And because he had inherited a certain someone's particular brand of love-addled thinking, to an extent that probably should have concerned someone at some point.
Inherited traits were not to be underestimated. Which was why, when faced with the sheer weight of what Satsuki felt for him, Naruto did not find it frightening at all.
He found it precious.
That "I can't live without you" dependency. That "you are my entire world" fixation. That "I would do anything for you" resolve. None of it was a burden. All of it was treasure.
Since Satsuki has held nothing back from me... Naruto was still thinking through this when a particular idea surfaced.
He thought of what Satsuki had placed inside him.
The Amaterasu Rei flames -- capable of altering concepts. She had given them to him as a pledge, as a guarantee. With those flames, he held authority over her will, her perception, anything about her.
He knew now what he wanted to do with that.
"Come here, Satsuki." Naruto spoke quietly. "Give me your hand."
Satsuki did not ask why. She did not hesitate or question. She held out her hand immediately, those dark eyes looking straight at him, the light in them burning hot enough to be genuinely startling -- absolute trust, absolute surrender, absolute "whatever you want from me."
Warmth moved through Naruto's chest. He took her hand, and in the next moment, a particular kind of chakra began flowing slowly from his palm into her body through their joined hands.
A portion of his fundamental chakra.
Carrying his power -- power that Satsuki would now be able to draw on.
And something else.
Memory.
The way a tailed beast and its jinchuriki could come to understand each other without words -- this chakra would build a bridge between them in the same way. From this point on, Satsuki could hold nothing back from Naruto.
Not one-sided openness.
Both directions. Genuine. Complete. Total.
Nothing held back by either of them.
Warmth flooded through Satsuki the instant it began.
Not ordinary warmth -- not simple heat. This came from somewhere beneath ordinary feeling, rising from the depth of the soul, the kind of warmth that made you want to stay inside it. Familiar and intimate in a way that made her ache, because it was his.
Satsuki loved this feeling. How much? Ranking just below what a husband and wife were supposed to do together.
This was too much.
Satsuki's breathing shortened. She genuinely could not hold on much longer. She wanted -- right now, in this moment -- to claim him completely. Not that soft, gentle, measured kind of love. The kind that made her feel it in her bones: he is mine. Total. Absolute. Without remainder. She was reaching for that when --
A strange sound came from somewhere deep inside her awareness.
It did not feel like something from the outside world. It felt like it had resonated directly inside her soul -- a voice with the quality of mechanical synthesis.
Ding!
Satsuki's eyes went slightly wide.
Congratulations, Host: Bond established with canon character "Uzumaki Naruto" at Level 9,223,372,036,854,775,807. (The nature of this relationship has undergone a fundamental transformation.)
Reward: 4,000 points acquired!
"...What was that?" Satsuki looked at the hand Naruto was holding, her dark eyes full of confusion.
"That is --" Naruto began.
He paused, sorting through where to start explaining. "The thing that makes me stronger. Satsuki can use it now too."
Why did he have a system in the first place?
That was not a question he could answer with "it comes standard with being reborn into another world." Especially since he was not exactly a straightforward case of reincarnation to begin with.
He had been seventeen. He had recently gained command over the power of the planets and had begun pushing further. If he could absorb the chakra of individual planets, could he go one step beyond that? Could he absorb the chakra of the starfield itself? Not any single celestial body's energy -- but the energy that belonged to the endless cosmos as a whole, distributed through the infinite dark.
He had tried.
The cosmos had answered him. Through the power of his Star Eye, it had responded.
And it had created something.
"Stellar Weave: Boundless Abyss."
That was the name the cosmos gave it.
Its primary property was something that made the mind go strange trying to follow it.
When the treasure was formed in the current timeline, it automatically broadcast what could be called an "existence declaration" toward every version of the past -- every prior point along the timeline.
From the moment of its creator's birth all the way to the present moment of the treasure's formation, across that complete stretch of time, the treasure would be "forcibly inserted."
Which meant this: even though Naruto had only created it roughly a year ago, in terms of what the timeline actually recorded, this treasure had existed since he was an infant.
It had always been there.
Always with him.
Always waiting to be called awake.
The treasure itself functioned as a permanently active coordinate anchor. Its very existence broadcast a signal outward into the infinite cosmos: "connectable." Any universe that received that signal had the potential to establish a link.
Once the treasure connected with a given alternate universe, it would begin doing one thing: analyzing that universe's foundational rules.
The laws of physics. The energy systems. The logic of cause and effect. Even the manner in which divine beings existed within that world -- all of it would be read, broken down, and understood.
After that analysis was complete, the treasure could use Stellar Chakra -- the energy that belonged to the cosmos itself -- to replicate and produce a power system native to that universe.
Chakra. Sage energy. Spiritual force. Whatever form it took -- any of it was possible.
And the method by which this treasure was activated... the ultimate purpose of this technique was to bind the user's existence to the "benevolent aspect" of the cosmos.
So the material required to activate it was only one thing.
Simple in concept.
Extraordinarily rare in practice.
Powerful, genuine, positive feeling directed toward the user.
Trust.
Dependence.
Devotion.
Love.
The kind of emotion that came from somewhere real, that held nothing back, that wanted nothing except for him to be well -- the kind that represented a bond in its purest form.
The more of it. The stronger. The better.
Naruto came back to himself and looked at Satsuki again.
His wife had her face tilted up toward him, those dark eyes watching him, and in their depths was the light he knew better than any other.
There was trust in it.
There was dependence.
There was devotion.
There was love.
And there was more than that -- something more layered and more absolute than language could reach, something that belonged only to Uchiha Satsuki, consuming and blazing and entirely hers.
"Satsuki." Naruto spoke gently. "That sound just now was confirming something."
He held her hand tighter. "It was confirming the bond between you and me."
