The drive into Prague took forty minutes.
Forty minutes of small talk. Weather. Isabella's condition, generally about life and how Prague was beautiful this time of year.
Forty minutes of lies and deceit.
Sarah drove, relaxed and comfortable, one hand on the wheel, occasionally glancing at me to make sure I was okay.
"You seem nervous," she said as we entered the city. "It's understandable. Going back to your mother's apartment there are probably a lot of memories there."
"Yeah." I stared out the window. "A lot of memories."
Including the memory of finding her there. Of her collapsing from poison.
All because Sarah had led us there, had led assassins straight to us.
"I appreciate you coming with me," I said, forcing warmth into my voice. "I know you're busy."
"Never too busy for you, Elena, you are now family." She reached over, squeezed my hand. "We're in this together. Whatever you need."
The words should have comforted me.
Instead, they made my skin crawl.
