Malorie and Judith reached home quickly, their hearts lodged firmly in their throats. Malorie's hand hovered protectively above her tummy as she alighted from Judith's carriage, her breath uneven.
They both walked inside, Judith lighting up the space as she hurriedly lit the candles one by one. She came to Malorie's side immediately, checking her over with sharp, anxious eyes. Malorie's hair was a mess, her body shivered in fear, and her eyes bore a frightened, glassy look that unsettled Judith deeply.
"You're okay," Judith whispered, leading her further into the house and up to their room. "We need to leave this place right this instant," Judith panted. When she had walked in on the scene earlier and seen Ethan being helped up by Marcus, she had known at once that Malorie and her child were no longer safe.
Lorien's behaviour must have already told Marcus exactly who Malorie was.
"Wh… what if he comes here? I… I don't—"
