Chapter 131: Scale Expansion
Throughout the entire war across the planet, the Alpha Legion made absolutely no tactical errors whatsoever. The heavy casualties sustained were solely due to the overwhelming number of Orks present, so incredibly numerous that they could crush their enemies through sheer quantity alone.
The entire planet's surface was a continuous battlefield, with thick smoke and raging fire rising everywhere across the terrain. From high orbit, the massive explosion craters scattered across the planet's surface were clearly visible to all observers.
The Alpha Legion spent a full year of combat resolving a core planet located in the Ork Star Region. For a planet with such extreme conquest difficulty, this progress rate was entirely reasonable within the overall context of the Empire's campaigns.
A month later, on the flagship's primary bridge, Omega and Alpharius carefully summarized the war's results together.
Alpharius spoke calmly and deliberately. "Perhaps the Emperor himself valued our Legion's powerful firepower capabilities, which is why he made us one of the vanguard Legions specifically. This recent war also proves clearly the great advantages of our tactical approach. Sufficient firepower deployment minimizes casualties effectively."
Omega spread both of his hands wide with a faint smile visible. "I'm genuinely glad, brother, that you accept my bombing tactical philosophy fully. Now the Legion's ammunition supplies are basically depleted entirely, and we also need to replenish a large number of recruits urgently. There's also an entire Star Region of Orks waiting for us to eliminate."
Alpharius wasn't in the mood to joke with him at all. In large-scale frontal battles like this, an assault Legion fought this particular way. "We only have two Forge Worlds available. Given the current ammunition consumption rate, it's a bit too few for our needs."
Once bombing tactics were employed in battle, they were destined to consume countless rounds of ammunition. This particular tactic required powerful logistics capabilities to be adequately sustained.
Omega thought carefully for a moment before thoroughly analyzing the situation. "The Isidior Star Region has a good forging system already that can build small space warships effectively, and producing large-scale missiles is not a problem at all."
"What's more significant, there are other newly joined Star Regions available. Manpower resources and Imperial Army weapons production are not major issues at present. We are not facing the Rangdan Xenocides like we were seventy or eighty years ago in the past."
He leaned forward intently. "I believe firmly that the Alpha Legion's strength can conquer the Alarand Star Region in ten years."
Alpharius was deeply satisfied to see the Legion so powerful now, and he gradually gained a deeper understanding of the vast Ultramarines Legion's methods.
He asked with a knowing smile, "Brother, you used to manage only the Alpha Star Region initially, then the Medias Star Region was added subsequently, and now it's nearly three or four Star Regions total. The governed Star Region is continuously expanding outward. From the development of this matter specifically, have you not discovered anything significant?"
"What exactly?" Omega understood immediately what the other party was going to say as soon as he heard the question, indicating clearly that his and Alpharius's philosophies were gradually converging.
Alpharius looked at him directly with a smile evident. His original idea was correct after all. Although the two brothers initially differed, they would eventually walk the same path, though their starting points were different.
He could accept that reality.
Omega saw his confident expression clearly and felt helpless about it. Although the governed Star Region was indeed continuously expanding outward, his personal energy and available time were also severely limited. He couldn't keep up adequately once the Legion's governed Star Region reached a certain threshold.
Compared directly to him, Guilliman was more rational overall, his brain always in a state of mechanical rationality.
Now that the Alpha Legion's war on Aifei Planet was over completely, there were still nearly a hundred Ork planets remaining in the Alarand Star Region that had not been dealt with yet.
The Legion returned to the Forge World first to replenish the depleted ammunition stores fully.
Rex of the Forge World was genuinely shocked when he saw Omega after a full year apart.
He carefully assessed the need for recruits, the quantity of ammunition required, and the intensity of the war with the Ork Empire, which far exceeded that with other alien species.
No wonder Omega needed to keep producing weapons and ammunition. The prepared ammunition quickly filled the fleet's empty ammunition depots.
...
A month later, exactly, Omega's fleet was resupplied fully with personnel and ammunition and once again warped directly to the Alarand Star Region for continued conquest.
Alpharius and another dispersed fleet successively received large amounts of material supplies from their governed Star Region territories, then returned to the Star Region for further conquest operations.
At the same time, the Isidore Star Region and several other newly joined Star Regions began systematic construction and reforms, simultaneously establishing the same conscription and officer training systems as the Alpha Star Region used.
Over time, nearly six Star Regions were established as a massive logistical support system in the rear areas. All six combined were mass-producing missiles and ammunition, training recruits continuously, ready to join the Legion for expeditions whenever needed.
Isidore Star Region, Kurk Forge World
This was the new Forge World chosen and prepared specifically by Albert the Wise.
The entire world's surface was already under large-scale construction efforts. Albert stood firmly in the newly built Steel Fortress, looking down at the military supply demand file in his hand carefully, and he couldn't help but smile with satisfaction.
This was Omega's direct request to Albert to coordinate the production of missiles and nuclear weapons in the governed Star Region worlds in the rear areas, thereby amassing them in large quantities.
Because some worlds already could produce missiles, nuclear bombers, and transport planes, and Russel and several other Sages were campaigning with the Legion outside, this particular task fell to Albert.
In addition to clearly documenting ammunition and personnel demands, information on the planets in the newly joined Star Regions needed to be collected thoroughly to inform Omega's understanding of the situation accurately.
Albert calculated the workload and time required and found that he couldn't handle it alone. After thinking deeply with his mechanical eye, he smiled knowingly.
"Such a large amount of intelligence collection is required," he said aloud. "This matter is best left to the Data Repository organization."
In the space of a Star System in the Alarand Star Region, a thousand Legion fleets were engaging the Ork fleet directly. Omega received Albert the Wise's suggestion and looked at Company Commander Bright standing before him, lost in thought momentarily.
"Primarch, what's wrong exactly?" Company Commander Bright asked, half-reporting formally.
Omega explained the governance issue clearly, then continued speaking. "The Data Repository needs to be expanded. The lower levels should be decentralized to the major Star Regions to help me systematically collect data across various planets. It's completely unrealistic for Astartes to do this work. The Imperial Army needs to assist directly."
"They are also under the Data Repository's command structure?" Bright was noticeably surprised to hear the organization was expanding. He had a strong premonition that the number of people would be huge indeed.
Omega nodded in confirmation. "Yes, the Mechanicum is responsible for production work, and the Data Repository is responsible for data collection tasks. It's quite good overall."
"As the organization grows and the number of people increases substantially, I think we should lay out the biological chip production process across various Star Regions as well. This can absorb a large population for labor effectively and also train many data analysis personnel simultaneously."
Bright immediately accepted the Primarch's task without hesitation, but he asked worriedly, "Will this cause objections from the Mechanicum directly?"
"Machine spirits belong to the god of all machines, and the Empire's machine spirits have always been produced by them exclusively."
Omega was speechless momentarily.
As the Mechanicum's power grew stronger, it was indeed possible they would monopolize chip production entirely.
He said more firmly, "Then, for the human worlds and alien worlds we conquered previously, who produced their biological chips these past few millennia exactly?"
"Slightly adjust the machine spirit's internal structure, then package its exterior differently to make it a bit more mysterious. It becomes the Data Repository's unique machine spirit. This way, we can produce them in large quantities without restrictions. For the Data Repository to grow properly, the production of machine spirits must not be restricted by the Mechanicum at all."
"That works too, I suppose." Bright was a bit dumbfounded by the simplicity.
If the Primarch said it could work, then it could definitely. Anyway, the underlying logic of binary code was left to the incomparably wise Primarch to design personally.
Omega chuckled to himself.
A piece of pork had various cooking methods like steaming, boiling, stewing, and frying available. Let alone binary biological chips, changing the packaging design would clearly reveal the Data Repository's unique machine spirit.
Very normal indeed.
...
The war continued relentlessly. Navigator Christie relayed word of the Data Repository's expansion into the rear territories, and the various Star Regions quickly formed units upon receiving the order directly.
Time passed steadily amidst the busy war efforts. Omega had to balance the war with the Orks against the vast rear administration.
Each time he conquered a Star System and returned to the Forge World afterward, he would collect data from these continuously expanding Data Repositories, understand the current situation of the central Star Regions accurately, and propose comprehensive and systematic solutions accordingly.
The large-scale expansion of the Data Repository significantly strengthened Omega's connection with its governed Star Region territories.
The planetary governments of each Star Region could obtain clear governance plans directly from the Data Repository. After benefiting substantially, they became even more enthusiastic about establishing the Data Repository, and the organization's expansion became systematic and well-ordered.
While the Data Repository transformed into a cross-Star Region super-large organization, the Alpha Legion's war proceeded very smoothly overall.
Aifei Planet was the core Star System of the Orks in the Alarand Star Region.
After conquering this Star System completely, other Star Systems were straightforward to conquer subsequently. Some planets only had scattered millions of Orks garrisoned loosely and could be eliminated in a month.
