"Forty-four," Eden said.
It was written on the slate in front of her, small, in the corner she kept for things she did not want in the middle of a board. Under it, a line. Under the line, two other figures Jayde knew by heart: 19:40 and 36:40. Nest Eleven and Harl's Bottom. The only two points on the continent anybody had ever measured from the inside.
"From the diameter," Jayde said.
"Off six passes, against the line those two make." Eden turned the slate a little so the lamp fell across it. "It isn't a count. I can't count from the sky. I can tell you how big the field is, and I can tell you that the last two times the field was smaller, it took her that long. Ardh is a great deal bigger than Harl's Bottom."
"And the error?"
"Three minutes either way. Maybe four. I'd rather say four."
