Chapter 103: Druid Training
POV: Adam
A month of preparation transformed Skellige.
Earthen fortifications rose around key locations—walls and barriers I'd created working alongside dwarven engineers Yarpen had sent via Cahir's network. The Mahakam craftsmen brought techniques for reinforcing stone with metal cores, creating defenses that even spectral weapons would struggle to penetrate.
But fortification was only half the work. The other half happened in Rán's grove.
"Close your eyes." The druid's voice came soft, patient, the tone of someone who'd guided hundreds of students through these exercises. "Feel the ground beneath you. Not as surface but as depth. Stone layered on stone, pressed by millennia of weight."
I obeyed, sinking into the meditation posture she'd taught me. My elemental senses reached downward, past soil and rock, into geological structures I'd never consciously perceived.
And there—threading through the stone like veins through flesh—rivers of energy that pulsed with warmth my physical body couldn't feel.
"Ley lines."
"Yes." Rán's approval was audible. "The earth's energy currents. Magic flows naturally through these paths, accumulating at intersections, dispersing along channels carved by forces older than human memory."
"I've felt them before. When fighting. When channeling elements."
"You've touched them. Now you must learn to work with them." Her hand found my shoulder, grounding me. "Walk the line. Follow its current with your awareness. See where it leads."
—Scene Break—
POV: Ciri
She watched Adam's training from the grove's edge, feeling echoes of the exercises through their bond.
The ley lines were visible to her too—had been since childhood, though she'd never understood what she was seeing. Streams of light beneath the world's surface, converging at places like this grove, flowing outward toward the ocean and mountains and everywhere in between.
"Your power responds to them also." Rán had approached silently, as druids seemed to do. "Elder Blood is... adjacent to what we practice. Different tradition, same underlying truth."
"What truth?"
"That energy flows through all things. Elements, dimensions, life itself—all expressions of the same fundamental force." The ancient druid settled beside her. "Your companion learns to work with elemental energy. You must learn to work with dimensional energy. Both lead to the same destination."
"Which is?"
"Mastery of energy itself. Not just its expressions but its source." Rán's eyes found Adam's distant form. "He glimpsed the Spirit World during our last session. That's rare for one so young. It suggests his path leads beyond what most practitioners achieve."
"And my path?"
"Leads to choice." The druid's voice carried weight beyond the words. "Elder Blood grants access to dimensional gates. How you use that access—whether for escape or confrontation, for running or standing—that determines what kind of power you become."
—Scene Break—
POV: Adam
The ley line stretched beneath me like a river made of light.
Following it through earthen darkness, I felt the current's pull—gentle but insistent, guiding me toward... something. Intersection, maybe. Or destination. The distinction blurred in this perception.
Then the line joined others. Dozens of them, converging at a point that blazed with concentrated energy, and I found myself standing—not physically but spiritually—at what felt like the world's center.
[ Ley Line Convergence Reached ]
[ Power Amplification: +30% element efficiency at convergence points ]
[ Discovery: Strategic locations for maximum bending effectiveness ]
But that wasn't what caught my attention.
Beyond the convergence, past the energy flows and elemental currents, something else existed. A membrane between this world and another, thin enough that impressions leaked through—shapes and shadows and movements that suggested awareness on the other side.
"The Spirit World."
I reached toward it without thinking.
The membrane parted like water around a diving hand. Reality shifted, and for one breathless moment, I stood in a place that wasn't anywhere physical.
Spirits swirled around me—not ghosts but essences, nature given consciousness, elements become aware. They noticed me with curiosity rather than hostility, examined this strange mortal who'd stumbled into their realm, decided I wasn't threat enough to bother with.
"Avatar." The word came from everywhere and nowhere. "Young Avatar, finding the old paths again. Interesting. Very interesting."
"Who—"
"Not ready yet. Return when you've learned to walk before you try to fly."
The membrane sealed. Reality snapped back. I found myself kneeling in the physical grove, gasping, sweat streaming down my face despite the cool air.
"You touched it." Rán's voice held something between awe and concern. "The Spirit World. For how long?"
"Seconds. Maybe. I don't—" I shook my head, trying to clear the disorientation. "Something spoke to me. Called me Avatar. Said I wasn't ready yet."
"Spirit guidance." The druid helped me stand, her ancient hands surprisingly strong. "Rare and significant. Whatever you are, Storm-Brother, the spirits recognize it. That's... important information."
"What does it mean?"
"It means your path extends further than elemental bending. At the heights of your power—Level 80 according to whatever measurement your tradition uses—you might access the Spirit World fully. Become something more than mortal, less than divine." She paused. "Energy bending. The ability to manipulate life force itself, not just its elemental expressions."
[ LEVEL UP! 41 → 42 ]
[ XP Gained: 400 (Spiritual Training Breakthrough) ]
[ Stats: STR 56, STA 91, AGI 90, HP 560, MP 910 ]
[ New Skill: Ley Line Awareness (Active) ]
[ New Skill: Basic Spirit Perception (Passive) ]
[ Note: Spirit World access at Level 80 (Energy Bending prerequisite) ]
"For now," Rán continued, "focus on what you can learn. Ley line utilization. Spiritual perception. Connection to natural forces that will enhance your combat capabilities." She smiled, the first genuine warmth I'd seen from her. "You've exceeded my expectations, Storm-Brother. Continue exceeding them."
—Scene Break—
POV: Geralt
The witcher watched his charges emerge from the grove with something between pride and concern.
Both had changed during the month of training. Ciri moved with new confidence, her Elder Blood responding to Skellige's ley lines in ways that stabilized power once chaotic. Adam radiated strength that had nothing to do with physical development—spiritual growth manifesting in posture and presence.
They were surpassing him. Both of them.
"You're brooding." Lambert appeared beside him with characteristic lack of subtlety. "That's my line."
"I'm observing."
"Same thing with you." The younger witcher followed Geralt's gaze. "They're getting strong. Stronger than us, maybe."
"Definitely stronger than us. In raw power, at least." Geralt accepted the admission without bitterness. "Experience still matters. Wisdom still matters. But in terms of what they can do that we can't..."
"The gap's growing."
"The gap's always been there. We're just seeing it more clearly now."
They watched Adam and Ciri approach, hand in hand, faces flushed with exertion and triumph. Whatever they'd learned in the grove had changed them—matured them, connected them to forces beyond normal comprehension.
"Think they'll still need us?" Lambert's question held vulnerability he rarely showed.
"Different need. Guidance instead of protection. Experience instead of strength." Geralt moved to meet his approaching charges. "But yes. They'll always need us. Just not in the ways they used to."
The sun set over Skellige's mountains, painting the sky in colors that promised new dawns after dark nights.
Somewhere across dimensions, the Wild Hunt prepared to return.
