Chapter 54 - Chapter 54: The Rest and the Morning

After hours of painstaking work, Salazar and I finally allowed ourselves a moment of reprieve. The basilisk lay carefully dissected in the expanded satchel, its scales, venom, bones, and even trace magical fluids meticulously cataloged and stored in freezer mode alongside the dragon parts. Handling such dangerous creatures was exhausting, but the payoff—powerful resources for potions, wards, and experiments—was unmatched.

We surveyed the chamber, ensuring every defensive enchantment was in place. Barriers shimmered faintly in the corners, wards etched into the floor and walls, and magical runes pulsing softly, alert for intruders or traps. I muttered a few extra wards into the air, double-checking the spellwork.

"Feels almost… cozy, doesn't it?" Salazar said, smirking, though exhaustion softened the edges of his usual pride.

"Cozy?" I laughed softly, "If you call a tomb filled with deathly traps, ancient guardians, and a recently slaughtered basilisk cozy, sure."

We chuckled quietly, the tension of the previous battles easing slightly. With everything secure, we collapsed onto the floor, using a small levitation charm to keep ourselves just off the cold stone. Sleep came quickly, heavy and dreamless, as if the tomb itself granted us a moment of respite after the day's violence.

Morning came with a faint glow filtering through cracks in the ceiling. I awoke first, immediately sensing the magical layout of the chamber. Nothing had shifted. The wards hummed gently, reassuring me that our protections held. Salazar stirred next to me, yawning as he stretched.

"Morning," he murmured. "Ready to continue this… fun?"

I smirked, brushing off fatigue. "As ready as I'll ever be. Let's see what else Herpo left for us to discover."

We packed up our tools, reforged our satchels' containment charms, and double-checked the basilisk and dragon parts. Everything was secure. Then we stepped into the tomb's labyrinthine corridors once more, alert for traps and magical anomalies.

Every step felt heavier this morning, though not because of fatigue—this tomb had a weight to it, a sense that we were entering a domain designed to test the limits of anyone foolish enough to explore it.

"Keep your senses sharp," I warned Salazar, "I don't trust a single empty hallway in here."

Salazar nodded, his usual confidence tempered by the knowledge of what we'd already faced. "Agreed. No mistakes this time. Every step counts."

We advanced carefully, moving in unison, our magical wards overlapping like a woven shield. Every corner, every shadow, every flicker of movement could hide a trap, a guardian, or something even worse.

The tomb was far from done with us—and I couldn't wait to see what Herpo had left as the next test.
