Chapter 3 - An Unwanted Meeting

Present day In Lord Novarek's Office

---

Sunlight drifted through the windows, reflecting the glass of water on the table. Lord Novarek sat behind his desk, engrossed in his daily duties. He was particularly busy today. After King Valen III recently passed away due to unknown reasons, the fate of the kingdom rested on his hands.

There was a knock on the door.

"Come in!" Novarek said without looking up.

The person entered, footsteps slow and deliberate. The person sat on a chair across Novarek, legs crossed with a hand under his chin, his eyes fixed on the man before him.

"Always a pleasure to see you, Sir Novarek." The person spoke, a smile etched on his face.

Novarek didn't want to look up but he conceded. He felt the intensity of the other person's eyes on him, observing his every move. It could only be one person. Novarek thought.

"Is there something I can help you with, Great Knight?" Novarek sighed.

"If not, please see yourself out."

"Incredible, Lord Novarek. You must be a wizard." The Great Knight chuckled.

"How did you know it was yours truly?"

Novarek finally acknowledged his presence by looking at him, his eyes flashing over Konradin's long golden locks.

"Because it isn't everyday that I get uninvited guests." Novarek scoffed.

"Now, make it quick, Great Knight. I don't have all day."

Konradin smiled, "Sir Novarek, always straight to the point."

He ran a hand through his hair before continuing.

"I'm here to discuss the new training procedure you proposed for our new recruits and..." Konradin trailed off.

"Isn't General Kali responsible for this?" Novarek tapped his pen.

"General Kali is indeed responsible for this, but I came here in her place because I wanted to see you." Konradin's smile never faltered.

"See me?." Novarek repeated, seemingly confused.

"Well, explicit it is!" Konradin stood up, walking around the room looking as regal as ever.

"You know... it appears that someone saw you outside the Maple Leaf Palacetaking care of someone who apparently didn't need it. What I intend to say is that I, the great knight, have received anonymous letters from people begging me to rid them of the Massi monster."

"Massi monster? What nonsense?" Novarek thought before realization dawned.

"Was he by any chance talking of Massikists? Get rid of me? For what exactly? For giving them exactly what they wanted?" He tapped his foot, masking his inner tension with his usual cold demeanor.

"Ahahaha. Sir Novarek, you never fail to surprise me, however..." Konradin stopped in front of the desk, meeting Alexandre's gaze. "Even if you are the ex king's right hand, I'm still obliged to perform my duty and so do you."

Novarek glared at the presumptuous man before him, while the other smiled back.

"However this could all be a simple misunderstanding on one condition." Konradin resumed his earlier sitting position, legs crossed with hands under chin.

"And that is?" Novarek asked, tone business-like.

Novarek knew the type of man Konradin was. He knew he wasn't one to stop until he got what he wanted. He might be the ex king's right hand but the people were for Konradin and if anything strange were to happen to their Great Knight, he'd have to answer to the public.
