Chapter 93 - Chapter 93: A Resounding Victory

Sure enough, Gilbert then unleashed a radical statement: "You claim to protect animals, but is it just because animals move and make sounds? Have you ever considered the feelings of plants? They are rooted in the soil their entire lives, unable to move, unable to explore other places. These diligent, hardworking plants, nurturing Mother Earth, don't move, don't make sounds, don't cry out in pain. Yet, you ruthlessly shove them into your mouths and eat them. Have you ever considered what the plants are thinking?"

The seven experts opposite Gilbert were stunned by his radical statement. They had never considered the issue from this angle before. At this point, any answer they gave would be wrong. If they said eating plants was innocent, then eating animals would also be innocent. They couldn't say that a plant's life wasn't as valuable, since biology had long proven that both animals and plants are living organisms. Could they claim that a plant's life was less noble than an animal's? Then their earlier slogan about God making all beings equal would fall apart. From the moment they declared plants inferior to animals, they would implicitly categorize all living things into different ranks, which would severely contradict the animal protection organization's slogan and destroy its foundation.

Seeing the expert panel speechless, Gilbert gave a few more examples: "I have some research data here that shows the number of plant extinctions each year far exceeds that of animal extinctions. Yet, you show no concern for the plants destroyed by your mouths, while you relentlessly focus on others eating meat."

Jack Wells retorted, "We only eat economic crops, non-endangered agricultural products. We're not harming endangered plants at all."

Gilbert knew the opposing expert panel was starting to panic, and their words had exposed a loophole. "Then we haven't eaten endangered animals either, have we? It's all farm-raised pork and beef. If your argument is that eating agricultural products isn't considered harm, then how can our eating meat be considered harm?"

Exactly, can it? People who are strictly vegetarian are definitely a minority; most people eat both meat and vegetables. The per capita meat consumption in the United States has long been among the highest in the world. Most Americans eat meat; does that mean they are all harming animals? But if, according to the animal protection organization experts, it's fine for them to eat agricultural products, then it should be fine for us to eat meat. From that moment on, Gilbert stood with the majority of meat-eating North Americans.

While the opposing expert panel was still in a daze, Gilbert pressed his advantage: "Furthermore, based on our investigation, not all of you are vegetarians, are you?"

"What do you mean?" Jack Wells frowned.

"What do I mean?" Gilbert clapped his hands, signaling them to look at the big screen. The photo on the big screen showed two people in a restaurant. The other person wasn't important; what mattered was that one of them was using a fork to pick up a steak and put it into their mouth. Although the photo wasn't very clear, it was evident that the person eating the steak was one of the experts: Galt Howard.

Upon seeing this photo, Galt Howard's face instantly turned pale. He stammered for a long time but couldn't utter a single word. At this point, Gilbert had already won the live television debate. From any angle, the animal protection organization had no reason to attack him further, because they themselves were not clean. They constantly preached about animal protection, yet they were feasting on animal meat. They constantly preached about the equality of all beings, yet they showed no concern for the plight of plants.

Jack Wells tried to regain control of the situation: "Director Gilbert, you did not submit this photo to our side beforehand; it constitutes an invasion of privacy."

Gilbert said indifferently, "This was just a casual snap by a tourist, and this isn't a court of law. I don't need to tell you everything. If you're dissatisfied, you can sue me, but that has nothing to do with today's debate."

Indeed, even if they sued, Gilbert was already the winner of today's debate. Resorting to such petty tactics would only make them seem like sore losers. Jack Wells had a premonition that the animal protection organization's good days in Hollywood were probably coming to an end.

At the end of the program, Gilbert also delivered a moving speech, listing the animals and plants that had gone extinct in recent decades. He called on everyone to care for those animals and plants genuinely facing extinction and to take protective action, rather than focusing on a champion bull for profit and fame. Such an upside-down approach, he argued, was the real harm.

The previous debate, purely as a means to victory, might have left some viewers with the impression of Gilbert being radical. However, this final speech, delivered from a moral high ground, elevated the theme of Gilbert's entire argument.

Lewis, Sarati Morton, and their group cheered in a bar as they listened to Gilbert's speech. "Well said! Let's toast to Gilbert's words..." "Cheers..."

Zoe and Doug hugged each other in celebration: "Sure enough, I knew Gilbert wouldn't disappoint us. He really exposed the hypocrisy of the animal protection organization. We won!"

It wasn't just movie fans; many ordinary people whose lives had been disrupted by the animal protection organization, as well as directors, celebrities, and film companies who had suffered greatly, couldn't help but applaud and celebrate. The animal protection organization had long been a source of public outrage, but previously, they stood on the moral high ground, and everyone was afraid. But now, Gilbert had torn off their mask of hypocrisy and pulled them down from that pedestal. From now on, the animal protection organization would no longer be a headache-inducing or fearsome entity to face.

When the live broadcast ended, Gilbert walked out of the studio. Jack Wells glared at him with cold eyes. Sofia Coppola was furious; how could the loser still be so arrogant? So, she glared back. Unable to bear the stare, Jack Wells touched his nose, turned around, and left. He had a premonition that the animal protection organization was finished in Hollywood, and he was about to be unemployed.

Gilbert watched Jack Wells' dejected figure disappear, then turned around. A petite figure immediately rushed into his arms—it was Naomi Watts. Naomi Watts was crying at this point. She didn't know why, but seeing Gilbert's dashing demeanor inexplicably made her want to cry.

"Why are you crying? Didn't I win?" Gilbert pulled out a tissue and wiped Naomi Watts' tears.

Sofia Coppola said from the side, "You, you never play by the rules. I guess now various organizations will have to think twice before trying to mess with your film crew."

"That's hard to say," Gilbert shook his head. "As long as there's profit, someone will always take risks." If not an animal protection organization, there would be environmental organizations, or Black Lives Matter, and perhaps minority groups in the future.

Sofia Coppola was full of confidence in Gilbert at this moment: "I believe in you, Gilbert. You can calmly handle any situation that arises."

"I hope I can be as you say!" Gilbert sighed. This time, his personal involvement, besides having the confidence to handle it, also served another purpose: to promote the movie. If there were any trending topics online at that moment, the movie Real Steel would definitely be in the top three.

The live program ended, but its influence did not dissipate. Soon, the animal protection organization protesting at the Warner Bros. studio entrance attracted another group of protesters. The signs these protesters held clearly echoed Gilbert's words.

"Please don't harm our best friends, plants..."

"Defend the freedom to eat meat; eating meat is not a crime..."

"I protest your protest, a bunch of hypocrites..."

With their defeat in the television debate, the animal protection organization's protests lasted only a few days before quickly dispersing. In Hollywood film sets, the animal protection organization became widely denounced. All the frustrations that various film crews had passively endured from the animal rights activists were now being retaliated against. The animal protection organization had been extorting Hollywood film crews for a long time. After Gilbert exposed their hypocrisy, their loss of reputation was substantial enough. However, the loss of reputation alone was not enough; there were also financial losses.
