POV Jess
I finish redoing Darlene's pulse ox monitor and I'm about ready to leave to prep Cole's antibiotic when she decides it's a beautiful time to talk my ear off. On a normal night, I would have no problem sitting in a patient's room and chatting for a while but I'm flustered tonight and Cole needs that antibiotic in his body precisely at nine o'clock he's a high risk for infection and has already contracted one already.
I allow Darlene to speak for another two minutes until I have to excuse myself to get back to work. Closing the door behind me I hear chatter coming from a few doors down, multiple voices to be exact.
Oh, I am fuming, I'm certain there's more than just two visitors in that room. I rush to get the antibiotic and pray Roman is not around anymore because he'll have my ass if he finds out the visiting rules are being violated especially with a high-risk, new patient of ours.
I barge through the door of 312 and five visitors are loitering around the room. It's absolutely suffocating in here and the room is massive it's practically the size of a studio apartment. A man and a woman are sitting on the beige vinyl sleeper sofa. The man is looking out the window at the Seattle skyline; it's gorgeous, but he's looking away. Shaggy is talking to Cole, and Tattoo Canvas is head down, staring at his phone.
"What is going on in here?" I ask as sternly as possible.
All eyes land on me for a second and as if I'm a ghost they go back to their conversations not giving a single shit about what I have to say. I don't have time for this, this prick needs his antibiotic I'll deal with this disrespect when I'm done.
"Here," I say flatly handing over the oral medicine syringe.
He rolls his eyes at me, pushes the liquid into his mouth, and shoots it back out all over my black scrubs, the sinister smile on his face makes me want to slap him into oblivion!
"You prick," I bite out. I don't care about my choice of words and if I get scolded for it he deserves it.
Shaggy cracks up, doubled over holding his stomach, "Oh my god man, it looks like she's been creamed on!"
Ha.ha really funny…
Immature asshats.
I'm fuming at this point, I walk over to the sink to clean myself off and as soon as I'm done I'm calling security. We'll see who gets the last laugh.
"Yo Carson you'll never believe who we saw while we were downstairs," Shaggy says.
Cole remains silent and Shaggy continues on, "Morrison dude."
My back is turned to the party while I wipe white goo from myself. My spine straightens when I hear Cole's voice, "Jake?"
They know Jake Morrison? The paramedic Jake Morrison? Why and how on earth would they know each other? I know Jake is from California but jeez I didn't know it was that small of a world. Jake is too good to ever run in the same circles as these degenerates.
The creek of the door has me directing my attention to it, oh god not another. A woman, the one spying in the hall slowly starts coming in. Her arms are filled with tattoos, black wavy hair, big brown eyes, a hooped nose and lip piercing and fifties style makeup. She's gorgeous in the least.
"Lex," Cole breathlessly lets out as if he's been longing for her and it must be a dream.
The entire energy in the room has tilted on its axis. The silence is nearly unbearable you can hear a pin drop. Everyone, including me looks between the two of them.
"Cole, oh my god," tears welled in her eyes and she rushes over to him.
"Baby, there you are," he cups her face in his hand, adoring her.
"I'm here," she grabs his hand that was cupping her face, and trails kisses on his palm.
A low grunt from Shaggy catches my attention. This is so unbelievably awkward, shouldn't they all leave so they can have their time together? Eh, whatever not my monkeys, not my circus.
The two lovebirds continue to reconnect with one another by cuddling up. Shaggy looks bothered and the others go back to whatever they were doing before "Lex" walked in. I finish blotting my scrubs, I need to refill the antibiotic but first, these disrespectful fucks gotta get lost.
"I need you guys to leave now," No bullshitting around I put my hands on my hips and hold my ground.
"Oh c'mon gorgeous, we haven't seen our guy in weeks we came all this way," Shaggy tries to swoon me.
At this point I'm losing my shit. I've had enough of this, "You came all this way huh? Because I think you've either been here the whole time or if you did leave then that's pretty shitty of you to leave your so-called friend for dead, so please enlighten me, which one is it? Not one of you called to see if he was okay he was a fucking John Doe for a week minimum! So where the fuck were you?!"
After the words leave my mouth I know I fucked up, I overstepped immensely but the evident cord I struck in shaggy confirms my suspicions that he was present the night of the accident. In my heart, I believe all of them were and they left him for dead because who knows why, probably because they were covering their own asses for being high as shit or something, none of it being justifiable.
"Let's go," Shaggy demands of the others and they all get up to follow suit.
Lex stands up and starts for the door following the others, I grab her arm, "Hey uh, you can stay, there's still forty minutes left of visiting hours."
She puts her head down, "No, I should go."
"Lex, baby, you just got here though," Cole pleads.
She doesn't respond to him, doesn't look at him, she just shakes her head and walks out the door.
Okay, what in the reality TV show is going on?! I glance over at Cole, and he looks like he's trying to conceal the devastation he has to be feeling. I don't know what I was thinking by saying what I said and it's starting to eat at me now that the adrenaline has dissipated.
"I'm going to go refill your antibiotic," I hold up the syringe.
Not a word leaves his mouth, he swallows hard and gives me a nod.
