Chapter 11 - Preserved

Third Party Pov:

While Ravana would have loved to be awake that instant, the truth is that would prove very difficult as she was already deceased. Unbeknownst to her, even after death, her body had been carefully preserved and was being studied still.

While the others were placed into a suspended state vitrification, she was simply placed in cryosleep. With Ravana having passed early, she was simply supposed to be discarded, but the lead scientist took a liking to her and along with her anomalies, they all saw the benefit in studying her further.

Though, she was no longer a main priority, having been believed to have failed the third phase. So, she was placed in a less protected form of suspension via cryosleep, but that was enough for her new fan.

Even after death her corpse could not rest in peace, because while she did fail the final phase, her notes and journal entries proved absolutely fascinating to the people who had conducted the experiment in the first place.

The lead scientist in particular who had taken a liking to subject 9, studied her intensively. Constantly writing reports on how the subject seemed to have possible neurological activity, even though she was dead. In their eyes that should not be possible because they could no longer access the subject via the system. Reduced to a body wading through time for their own gains and 'scientific research'.

Ultimately however, after researching Nine for over 3 weeks, she was labelled as crazy by the people around, they thought she was only wasting resources and could've solely focused her time on the subjects that they had been trying to reanimate. Even though her research and participation were the most critical aspect of this whole experiment, she was mocked for preferring to study the 'dead ones' instead of the living, but she had no interest in the constant torment and torture of living creatures, hence she preferred to study those who passed.

She found it inhumane to inflict literal torture on people who were in a perfectly functioning state of mind in the name of science, and while she understood the importance of these advancements, she would still prefer to have no ties with that aspect of it.

Ravana or Nine as she affectionately called her was not her only subject, she had a number of other subjects t but Nine was by far her favorite. Ironically, she also had the body of Rin.

He was listed as just Rin in her catalog, but she had taken a particular liking to this one as he had seemed to figure out what was happening without even having to go through the trials of the other subjects. He must have known something that tipped him off beforehand, hence why he was so skeptical of the hospital and even more intriguing that the person he had seen was Nine.

Somehow, the two became intertwined which had made her even more interested in the two. However, things were not going so well on her end, as she was expected to complete an additional phase of the subjects that they were told about, and that was getting them awake.

Many of the subjects were in very fragile states throughout their different phases, this made it increasingly difficult for her to properly put them to sleep without permanently damaging any part of the body that needed to be properly preserved.

This had also been a big part of the reason she had requested that the subjects be switched from cryosleep to vitrification as it was safer. That was the easier part of her job, letting them rest peacefully after the world of pain and suffering they had already endured at the hands of people who wanted nothing more than to see their demise.

Humans were spiteful, selfish creatures is what she always thought, but she realized they could do none of that if they were dead. After harboring that kind of thought process for so many years, it's no wonder she became obsessed with the non-living and had developed such a deep and profound admiration for the corpses.

While she did not exactly agree with the reanimation process as alluring as it was, she was paid to do just that and had no choice but to simply do it. After everything these subjects had gone through, she was of the belief that she did not need to bring them back into such a cruel, unkind world.

She was simply notating like normal, working on the safest way to bring these subjects back when her monitor started going haywire, showing that something was definitely wrong in the cryochamber.

There was no hesitation in the way that she ran to the monitor checking what was wrong, it was after all her beloved Nine. The noise stopped before she could even get to the screen used for monitoring and she feared the worst. Although they were few, there were cases where the patient's body rejected the cryosleep state and that caused them to start decomposing.

As soon as she was face to face with Nine's pod, she checked the information being displayed and to her extreme pleasure, she was fine. Unlike the others, Nine didn't have any vitals, as she was placed in that state after she had died, while others were done before they had completely died, she was just to slow the decomposition.

Thinking it was a malfunction in the system and turning to leave, something caught her eye, a recent report autogenerated under the activity for brain activity section. That should be anything but possible, because Nine's brain was dead along with all her other organs.

Figuring that must've been where the malfunction was from, she clicked on it with the intention to delete the no doubt blank document and ask their technician to take a look at the pod for her to make sure everything was ok with the operating system.

The look of surprise that crossed her face only seconds later clearly stated that would not be happening. While she was confident that the report would be blank, she did not expect that for a second or two, there was actual recorded activity in the brain.

This may not have come at shock, had it happened a few minutes or even hours after she had died, but this was literally weeks after the subject had been dead. Furthermore, her bodily functions, including brain activity should be completely frozen, even if she wasn't dead, which she definitely was, nothing should be moving.

The more she stared at it, the more excited she became. Tripping over her own feet, she ran back to the room grabbing her notepad, pen and a recorder. She even started the recording early, listing the details of what she had just seen even though she herself found it hard to believe.

Entering the room cryochamber once again, she quickly ran to the monitor, looking for the report that was there just seconds ago, but it was nowhere to be seen. There was no report in the system and no matter where she checked, there was nothing there.

She checked the area for brain activity again and again and nothing.

It was to no one's surprise that she started questioning her sanity on whether the report was there or not, but she was sure about what she said and had no reason to doubt herself. So she did the normal thing and she checked again, this time checking the deleted area as well.

Surprise Surprise

There was no record of anything, which was strange, everything that was ever recorded in that cryochamber had already been deleted. There was one truth lingering in the air and it's that she was being watched.

There was no other way to explain why the information she had just seen was gone just like that. What she had failed to realize at that moment was that they were being watched indeed, but it was not her that they were truly interested in but rather Nine.

Someone else knew about Nine, and not only did they know of her existence, but they knew that she was wide awake in that state. Whether or not they were friend or foe was unknown, so in that moment a resolute promise was made to Nine.

No matter what happens, her mind must be preserved, because she was a bridge to questions that had long been asked, and now finally had a chance to be answered.
