While Xu Dan was busy developing two new games, Bruce Banner—who had been packing his belongings and preparing to leave Brazil—ran into trouble.
For some reason, General Ross seemed to have discovered his hideout somewhere in Rocinha.
Without warning, a well-trained strike team quietly moved in to capture him.
The moment Banner sensed several armed men approaching, he made a snap decision. He twisted the bedsheet into a makeshift rope, climbed out the window, and dropped.
As soon as he landed, he sprinted with all his strength.
Now that he had the "drug" Xu Dan had given him, he could run as hard as he wanted without worrying about his heart rate—or the risk of turning into the Hulk.
When the soldiers kicked open Banner's room and saw the window wide open, they knew instantly that the target had escaped.
They rushed to the window and spotted Banner sprinting in the distance, immediately signaling the ground units via radio.
A soldier raised his gun, and Banner genuinely panicked.
Even if those guns were loaded with tranquilizers, being captured would lead to the same fate.
The soldiers pursued relentlessly. Banner, desperate, realized that the only person who could help him now might be Mr. Xu Dan—someone he had never even met.
He fumbled out his old, antique phone and dialed the number stored inside.
…
New York.Antarctic Game Headquarters.
Xu Dan was still coding furiously when the phone vibrating beside his right hand suddenly rang.
"Banner?" he said, instantly recognizing the number he had memorized the day he located Bruce.
On the other end of the call came frantic breathing as Banner cried out, "Mr. Xu Dan! Gauze—General Ross—he's hunting me down!"
"Chasing you?"
Xu Dan understood immediately.
He had not expected General Ross to strike at this time—certainly not during daylight.
Glancing at the code on his screen, Xu Dan sighed.
"Banner, don't panic. Ross doesn't want to kill you right now. Just keep running. Even if they catch you, it will be fine—I'll send someone to rescue you immediately."
Hearing Xu Dan's steady tone, Banner finally felt a sliver of relief.
After ending the call, Xu Dan opened his contacts and found a number he hadn't dialed in a long time.
It was the phone he had assigned to Goenitz—because in modern New York, having no mobile communication device was no different from living in the Stone Age.
The call connected.
"Hello, my Lord."
Goenitz's tone was as stiff and reverent as ever. Others in criminal organizations might call their leaders "Boss," but Goenitz refused to change his title.
"Go to Brazil and save someone," Xu Dan ordered.
"Yes, my Lord."
Goenitz did not even ask who. That was loyalty.
Xu Dan sent Banner's personal information to Goenitz's phone and finally felt at ease.
There was nothing more to worry about—Goenitz had never disappointed him.
Setting the phone aside, Xu Dan returned to his work.
————————
With Xu Dan's reassurance, Banner regained some confidence and forced his exhausted body to keep moving.
But a single man's stamina was limited. Behind him was an entire squad led by a seasoned special-forces operative.
On top of that, several off-road vehicles were circling the area, tightening the encirclement.
Escape was nearly impossible.
Banner looked toward the thick forest outside Rocinha and immediately made a decision—to hide in the dense woods.
At least there, the vehicles couldn't follow.
And deep inside the forest, wireless signals would be weaker, which would complicate the squad's chain of command.
…
Emil Blonsky, an agent from Croatia and a seasoned veteran in his forties, had spent half his life on missions. His combat experience was extraordinary. General Ross had personally assigned him to lead the capture of Bruce Banner.
To an expert like Blonsky, capturing a scientist like Banner should have been simple.
But Ross had given two restrictions.
First: They were not allowed to shoot Banner—only tranquilizers.
Second: They must not provoke Bruce Banner. As for why? Ross gave no explanation.
The first restriction was manageable—they had handled similar missions before.
But the second… what did "not provoking the target" even mean?
Still, Ross was a general. Blonsky had no choice but to obey.
He led his team into the dense forest, but here their tranquilizer rifles were severely hindered. Hitting a moving target among trees and brush was nearly impossible unless they had a sharpshooter.
They had only one strategy left: shadow Banner, conserve energy, and wait for him to collapse from exhaustion.
General Ross sat in his armored vehicle, already on edge.
He had hidden the truth about the monster from his soldiers.
They had no idea what kind of terrifying being they were chasing. If Banner transformed—even once—this entire team would be pulverized.
The first covert capture attempt had already failed, but Ross refused to give up.
So he ordered the squad to continue pursuing.
But that created a new danger: Banner could transform at any moment.
Ross was terrified of that possibility. A single transformation, and even tank rounds would be useless—let alone a small ground unit.
He stared intently at the monitoring screens, watching every soldier's vital signs. The moment any soldier flatlined, it would mean Banner had snapped.
Yet after all this time, despite the long chase, Banner hadn't fought back at all.
"What's going on? Could he have— No. Impossible. Absolutely impossible!"
He grabbed his radio.
"Blonsky! Report to me! What's the situation?!"
"General… shhh—"
Right then, the signal cut out.
The timing sent a chill down Ross's spine. Rationally, he knew dense forests often interfered with communications. But there was another, far more terrifying possibility—
"Damn it. Did Bruce… go berserk?"
He barked at the soldiers in the vehicle:
"You! Restore communications immediately! No matter what—get me a connection to the forward team!"
"Yes, General!"
Ross leapt out of the car, glaring at the forest ahead, stomping in frustration.
"Blonsky, you useless fool—can't even capture a single Banner!"
