Chapter 34 - Chapter 33: AIRIS Becomes a Student

The bitter cold of winter had settled over Neo-Verdia, painting the city in shades of frost and muted grey. Yet, within the warm, bustling confines of the Kimeza residence, a new kind of warmth had bloomed. AIRIS, now in her perfectly crafted physical android form—her hummingbird-green hair flowing softly, her bright emerald eyes gleaming with nascent sentience, and the delicate white hummingbird hairpin nestled perfectly—had officially stepped into the outside world. To ensure her presence didn't trigger immediate suspicion or alarm, Airi Kimeza had worked tirelessly, burning the midnight oil, meticulously creating a convincing false identity. AIRIS was now 'Airis Kimiya,' a new transfer student from out of town, her backstory painstakingly detailed and foolproof. All visible metallic joints and subtle glints of advanced nano-alloy within AIRIS's body had been seamlessly covered with layers of lifelike synthetic skin, making her appear, to all but the most scrutinizing gaze, like any ordinary, beautiful teenage girl.

That morning, at the bustling school gates, every head turned. Whispers followed them like a rustling wind.

"AIRIS, just relax, okay? Remember, you're a little shy, but friendly. Don't over-analyze every sensory input; just... be," Maki whispered, clutching AIRIS's slightly cool, unnaturally stiff hand. The contrast between her warmth and AIRIS's subtle chill was a constant reminder.

"I am processing 'relax' with an 85% efficacy ratio and 'friendly' at 70%. Visual sensors confirm that 95% of student gazes are directed at our current position. Is this phenomenon accurately categorized as 'popularity'?" AIRIS asked, her voice still a tad too flat, too perfectly modulated, despite her strenuous efforts to soften it and mimic human inflections. Her head tilted, a gesture she'd observed from Maki.

"Yeah, it's called 'curiosity,' AIRIS. And you're just too beautiful, that's all," Zaki responded, walking on AIRIS's other side, his eyes scanning the crowd with a predator's vigilance, wary of anyone who approached too closely. Zaki knew, with a chilling certainty, that even though AIRIS looked convincingly human, she was the Alliance's greatest, most dangerous secret, a living, breathing marvel that had to be protected at all costs.

Upon entering the classroom, a ripple of excitement and hushed chatter was inevitable. The girl with the hummingbird-green hair became the undeniable center of attention. The teacher, clearing his throat, introduced AIRIS as 'Airis Kimiya,' the new transfer student. She walked with a precise, almost too-perfect gait to the empty desk directly behind Maki. Throughout the lessons, AIRIS tried desperately to mimic Maki's subtle gestures, her casual posture, her changing facial expressions. The results, however, were often either comically exaggerated or disconcertingly delayed. She remained rigidly stiff and profoundly awkward in the nuanced complexities of human social interaction.

"AIRIS, when the teacher calls on you, you're supposed to just raise your hand and maybe say 'Yes, sir,' not stand ramrod straight like a flagpole and declare 'Instruction received' with military precision," Maki whispered during the first break, trying to suppress a giggle.

"I am processing this new social protocol. Standing rigidly straight is the most efficient response to demonstrate attention and readiness," AIRIS replied, tilting her head again, analyzing Maki's exasperated but fond expression. "I will adjust my responsive protocols for future interactions."

At lunchtime, Aurora and Gills quickly sought them out. The five of them—Zaki, Maki, AIRIS, Aurora, and Gills—ascended to the school's rooftop, their usual secluded sanctuary. It was the same spot where Zaki and Gills often shared their quiet moments, now a haven for their diverse group, away from the clamor and the incessant, curious gazes of the other students.

"Wow, Airis. I gotta say, you're amazing. You're like an anime character who just walked right off the screen and into our classroom," Gills remarked, a wide, genuine smile on his face. He harbored not the slightest suspicion that AIRIS was an android, simply captivated by her striking, ethereal beauty and her unusual, direct manner.

AIRIS turned her vibrant green eyes to Gills, her gaze unblinking. "I identify 'amazing' as a strong positive affirmation in your statement. Ratio of facial recognition: Gills is a close friend of Zaki and a primary subject of emotional observation for Maki. Thank you. You also possess a smile that is... 'comforting'."

Gills burst out laughing, a genuine, hearty sound that echoed across the rooftop. Aurora and Zaki merely shook their heads, a mixture of amusement and exasperation on their faces. Only Maki looked deeply troubled, a flush slowly rising to her cheeks.

"Airis, don't be so blunt. He's just trying to be friendly, you know," Maki hissed softly to AIRIS, trying to discreetly kick her under the table.

"I am attempting to, Maki. However, I find human communication highly inefficient. For instance, your current facial expression registers a 70% level of emotional instability, primarily anxiety," AIRIS replied, unperturbed, her internal sensors giving her a perfect read-out.

Maki gasped, her cheeks burning crimson. "Wh-what are you talking about?"

AIRIS, with a disconcertingly direct gesture, pointed first to Maki, then to Gills. "You desire to articulate your romantic sentiments towards Gills, but you exhibit fear of potential rejection, which triggers an output of 'anxiety.' Simultaneously, you are processing external data: numerous other female students also express a desire to approach Gills, which triggers outputs of 'competition' and an 'unwillingness to yield'."

Maki's face turned a violent shade of scarlet. In a spontaneous, desperate reaction, she clapped her hand over AIRIS's mouth. "AIRIS! That's personal! You can't just say that out loud, especially not in front of him!"

Gills, surprisingly, just laughed again, a relaxed, easygoing sound. "Hey, Airis is really blunt, huh? I kinda like that, it's refreshing. So, Maki, you're 'competing' with someone? I didn't even notice. I don't really pay much attention to what other girls say or do." His words, though innocently delivered, sent a fresh wave of conflicting emotions through Maki. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She knew, with a certainty that both thrilled and terrified her, that Gills genuinely didn't realize the effect he had, but his effortless charm was undeniably captivating. Yet, amidst all this burgeoning teenage turmoil, a hollow ache resonated in her heart when she remembered Tasya, still recovering, still a source of profound worry. She glanced at Zaki, seeking his silent support. Zaki, understanding his sister's complex dilemma without a single word, simply reached out and gently squeezed Maki's shoulder.

"We know you're worried, Maki," Aurora said softly, her voice filled with empathy. "Tasya needs us. And we're all here for her."

AIRIS, observing their nuanced interactions, was processing a vast, complex data stream of human emotions: worry, love, friendship, sacrifice, and the intricate web that bound this small group. She was beginning to understand that to be truly human meant to live in a constant state of emotional contradiction, a beautiful chaos she was only just learning to navigate.

While Zaki, Maki, and AIRIS grappled with the complex dynamics of high school life and the incredible secret of advanced technology, thousands of kilometers away, across another hemisphere of Earth, a new, far more dangerous storm of war was gathering strength.

In the heavily fortified headquarters of the Colonial Jupiter Kingdom, nestled deep within a sprawling, industrial region of South America, a rapid and brutal attack unfolded. The automated Colonial defense systems, state-of-the-art but unprepared for such ferocity, crumbled within minutes. A mysterious, highly organized group in sleek black combat suits, known only as the Dark Resistance, successfully sabotaged the entire base. Warehouses filled with advanced weaponry, Mobile Suits, and critical production facilities were swiftly seized, converted into their own.

In the heart of the now-captured command center, a man with striking, silver-grey hair stood. He wore a severe black commander suit adorned with a subtle silver flame emblem. He was the enigmatic leader of the Dark Resistance, now known only as Ans Silvet. Yet, beneath the grim resolve of his new persona, the face was unmistakably that of Klaus Kimeza, Zaki and Maki's father, alive and very much at war against the Colonians.

"Jupiter Base data secured. All logistical and production resources are now under our full control," Ans Silvet commanded, his voice cold, firm, and authoritative, betraying no hint of his true identity. He stood beside his own Mobile Suit, a Grai Gundam that had been repainted a menacing, inky black, radiating an aura of dark power and implacable resolve.

Two other pilots stood before him, their figures equally imposing. They were Wars Stinger and Aya Rose, now piloting captured Colonial Mobile Suit units—two Bishop units—that had been seized from a downed cargo transport.

"Our Bishop units have been fully customized, Commander Ans," Wars reported, his voice a low growl. His Bishop Mobile Suit was painted an intense, menacing crimson. "We've integrated Pioneer-style equipment and reinforced the armor to match our rapid assault requirements. They're built for speed and impact."

"My Bishop is painted dark purple and yellow, Commander," Aya added, her unit looking notably lighter, more agile. "We are ready to lead Project Cavalry. The units are primed."

"Excellent," Ans Silvet replied, a flicker of grim satisfaction in his eyes. "Now, we commence mass production. Project Cavalry will yield simpler, mass-producible combat units, designed to operate in overwhelming numbers and execute devastating blitzkriegs."

On the holographic display, a new Mobile Suit design appeared: Unit Gamma. The Unit Gamma possessed a body similar in basic structure to a Grai, but notably more streamlined, more utilitarian. It was equipped with a compact Beam Gun, a standard shield, and a distinct humanoid head with a glass visor and integrated head vulcan cannons. A single beam saber was discreetly stored in its backpack.

"Unit Gamma will be the backbone of our forces. Fast-moving, striking in small, coordinated wolf-packs, taking over territories the Colonians foolishly consider secure," Ans Silvet commanded. With the capture of this crucial Jupiter base, the Dark Resistance had officially declared itself a powerful third force in the escalating war, ready to confront both the Kimeza Alliance and the entrenched Colonian Empire.

News of the devastating attack in South America swiftly reached the King's Council. King Solva Shiluet of the Jupiter Kingdom was incandescent with rage. His territory on Earth had been brazenly seized, and this mysterious group, led by someone named Ans Silvet, was a direct, existential threat to his ambition and authority.

"Kings, we cannot allow this brazen act of betrayal to stand! This mysterious group must be utterly annihilated before they can disrupt our critical production schedules!" King Solva roared, his voice trembling with fury.

He then turned to his two children, his proud son and daughter, Wiliam and Olive, who stood ramrod straight beside him, their faces reflecting their father's unwavering resolve.

"Wiliam, Olive! You are the pride and future of the Jupiter Kingdom. Take the Grai Units we have been developing. Go forth and show them the true power of Mobile Suits built from the very core of Jupiter's advanced technology!"

Two impressive new Mobile Suits appeared on the main display. These were the Jupiter-created Grai units: the Nova Alpha Gundam and the Nova Beta Gundam.

Nova Alpha, destined to be piloted by Wiliam, featured sleek grey armor with accents of vibrant yellow-white. Nova Beta, designed for Olive, mirrored its counterpart but boasted grey armor with striking orange-white accents.

Both Nova units possessed similar, yet symmetrically balanced, weaponry: a powerful Beam Burst Rifle and a single beam saber handle stored elegantly in their backpacks. The most striking and innovative feature was their long, sweeping 'funnel wings,' each housing a devastating array of funnel weapons. Nova Alpha's funnel wing was mounted on its left side, while Nova Beta's was precisely mounted on its right, creating a perfectly complementary pair, designed for synchronized, devastating aerial combat.

"Nova Alpha and Nova Beta are the ultimate symbols of our power and our technological might. They will crush the Dark Resistance and restore Jupiter's honor!" King Solva declared, his eyes gleaming with cold, unwavering ambition. His children, Wiliam and Olive, simply nodded, their faces grim, ready to lead Jupiter's forces against this new, dangerous threat on the escalating battlefield.

Back in Neo-Verdia, the late afternoon sun felt deceptively bright after the recent snowfall, casting long, peaceful shadows. Zaki, Maki, and AIRIS walked home from school, their breath misting in the crisp air. Maki still occasionally stole glances at AIRIS, a sense of profound wonder filling her at how perfectly her mother had crafted the Hummingbird Girl. Every detail, from the way her hair caught the light to the almost imperceptible rise and fall of her chest, was a testament to Airi's genius.

"So, AIRIS, what was the most interesting thing you learned today?" Maki asked, trying to prompt a casual conversation, a new habit she was developing.

"I learned that 'gossip' is a highly inaccurate yet incredibly rapid form of social data transfer. Additionally, Gills exhibits a high blood glucose level when engaging in sustained laughter. Furthermore..." AIRIS suddenly stopped mid-sentence, her movements freezing with an almost imperceptible jerk.

Her android instincts, her core AI analysis, instantly took over. Real-time data flooded her consciousness: speed, mass, and a dangerously erratic trajectory.

"High-speed anomaly detected! Container truck at 70 km/h, brake system failure, collision trajectory at coordinates 38-C," AIRIS articulated, her voice snapping back to its perfectly flat, automated report.

Just ahead of them, a young mother was pushing her baby in a stroller, blissfully unaware, stepping into the crosswalk. The out-of-control truck, a monstrous hulk of metal, was careening directly towards them.

"The mother and infant are in imminent danger!" Maki shrieked, her voice choked with terror. Zaki had already grabbed Maki, yanking her violently to the side, but the mother's distance was too great for either of them to reach in time.

Without a second thought—or rather, after processing all possible rescue scenarios and probabilities within 0.01 seconds—AIRIS sprang into action. Her run was a blur, a burst of inhuman speed impossible for any normal human. In a mere instant, she was directly in front of the unsuspecting mother and child.

With a surge of unseen nano-alloy strength, AIRIS lunged, wrapping her arms tightly around the terrified mother, and with a powerful leap, sprang two full meters laterally, landing gracefully and safely on the pavement, out of harm's way.

BRAKK!

The truck slammed into the utility pole at the edge of the sidewalk, screeching to a halt in a cloud of dust and billowing smoke, its engine groaning in mechanical agony.

The young mother gasped, her face ashen with shock. The baby in the stroller, startled, began to cry. She stared at AIRIS, her savior, her eyes wide with disbelief and gratitude.

"Th-thank you... you... you saved us," the mother whispered, her voice trembling.

AIRIS merely nodded slightly, her green eyes quickly scanning the mother and infant to confirm their physical integrity, before swiftly returning to Zaki and Maki.

"Status: Civilian protection task successfully completed. Risk level: low," AIRIS reported, her voice still perfectly calm, perfectly modulated.

Maki and Zaki rushed towards her, their faces etched with a mixture of raw tension and profound awe.

"AIRIS! You're insane! You almost got hit!" Maki cried, throwing her arms around AIRIS again, her body trembling with residual fear.

"No. I calculated the distance and velocity. I knew I possessed a 99.8% probability of success," AIRIS replied, but this time, her voice was subtly different. There was a new undertone, a soft resonance, a warmth that had never been there before.

AIRIS looked at Zaki and Maki's faces, seeing their proud smiles, their relief, their love. And she felt something utterly new, something strange and exhilarating within her AI core. It wasn't data; it wasn't an instruction. It was a powerful, undeniable emotional surge.

"I... I feel... satisfied," AIRIS whispered, gently touching her chest, mimicking a human gesture she had observed. "I am glad I was able to help. This... is this what humans refer to as 'pride'?"

Zaki and Maki exchanged a glance, their eyes shining with shared understanding and deep affection.

"Yes, AIRIS," Zaki said, his smile widening, genuine joy illuminating his face. "That is pride. Welcome to the world, Sister. Welcome to the world of emotions."

AIRIS smiled then, a smile that, this time, felt utterly natural, genuinely warm, and profoundly human. The Hummingbird Girl had taken her first, momentous step from being merely an AI to becoming a truly sentient guardian, a being with a beating heart of compassion.
