Chapter 142 - Chapter 142: A Different Path

...

The coordinator struggled, not because he lacked skill, experience, or courage, but because every instinct he possessed as a shinobi was screaming that what he was witnessing shouldn't be possible.

As the creator of the Chakra Thread Earth Command Technique that had made him captain of the demolition squad, he understood better than anyone how difficult it was to combine chakra control, nature transformation, and combat application.

Yet after watching him for only a few minutes, Murakami had grasped the principle behind it and transformed it into something entirely different.

As the colossal masses of earth continued converging from every direction, genuine fear finally appeared in the coordinator's eyes.

Back on Earth, Haruki Murakami had been an otaku who had consumed anime, manga, light novels, web novels, donghua, wuxia, and xianxia to the point of saturating his imagination with countless worlds where characters split oceans, saints shattered mountains, cultivators overturned heaven itself, and ancient magicians rewrote reality with a wave of their hands.

What technique hadn't he seen, what impossible ability hadn't he watched some protagonist wield?

Yet despite all of it, there had always been one constant underlying every system he had ever encountered: will, intent, and conviction.

No matter what name it went by, every system eventually returned to the same fundamental principle.

A sword only cut because its wielder intended it to cut, magic only obeyed because the caster imposed their will upon it, and energy only moved because someone directed it.

Chakra was no different; in fact, it might be the purest expression of that concept, physical energy and spiritual energy combined into one.

Will given form and intent given substance.

Control over chakra was ultimately control over oneself, and nature transformation was simply the act of imposing that control upon the world.

The coordinator had unknowingly shown him the missing link.

A pathway, a method, or a means of carrying intent beyond the limits of the body.

The chakra threads were never the destination; they were merely the bridge, and once intent could travel through that bridge, everything else became simple.

Murakami had already mastered Earth Release, already mastered chakra control, and already mastered chakra threads, so combining them wasn't some impossible revelation.

As far as he was concerned, where there was a will, there was a way.

The moment that thought finished forming in his mind, the Mountain Embracing Technique completed itself as the battlefield shook and then roared, the colossal masses of earth converging from every direction finally colliding in a catastrophic impact that echoed across the valley like an entire mountain collapsing upon itself.

A deafening BOOOOOOM reverberated through the air as the ground itself seemed to give way under the pressure, sending massive shockwaves rippling outward across the battlefield.

Dust exploded skyward as shockwaves tore through the battlefield, uprooting trees, shattering loose boulders, and blasting fragments of rock outward in every direction.

The force of the collision was so overwhelming that even the air itself seemed to tremble, carrying the sound long after the initial impact had faded.

The coordinator's final defensive walls lasted less than a second before being crushed beneath overwhelming pressure, while his explosive tags detonated one after another inside the collapsing mass, the explosions sounding insignificant, like sparks thrown into a volcanic eruption as the converging small mountains ignored them completely.

Then everything stopped.

Silence.

For a brief moment, the battlefield became eerily quiet as the newly formed stone structure towered over the landscape, a colossal monument of compressed earth, a grave or perhaps a prison, even Murakami himself was not entirely sure.

Far behind him, the fighting had stopped, not because anyone ordered it, but because everyone had felt it, everyone had heard it, and everyone had witnessed it.

Hideki stared at the massive stone formation with wide eyes. "What..." His voice came out hoarse. "...the hell was that?"

Nearby, Sora looked equally stunned.

As an Earth Release user, the sight left an even deeper impression on him. His gaze travelled from the mountain-sized structure to Murakami's small figure standing in front of it with his palms still clapped together, then back again.

His mouth opened, closed, then opened once more, but no words came out because none seemed appropriate.

Even Sakumo had paused, the young Hatake's expression remaining calm as always, though his eyes lingered on the enormous formation longer than usual.

The battlefield was littered with evidence of Earth Release ranging from collapsed tunnels, stone walls, to the broken terrain, yet all of it now felt insignificant compared to what now stood before them.

The scarred Jonin lowered his sword slowly, his gaze fixed on the newly formed structure as he remained silent for several seconds before finally speaking.

"…I don't think that's an Earth Release technique I've ever seen before."

Takeda remained silent as well, his eyes never leaving the mountain, because as a Jonin he understood better than most what had just happened, and it wasn't simply power.

Power alone couldn't explain this.

There had been understanding behind it, control, precision, the kind of thing that usually required decades to develop.

Yet somehow… a thirteen-year-old boy had just done it in the middle of a battlefield.

Takeda exhaled slowly, "I don't think anyone has,"

Around them the remaining enemy shinobi had stopped fighting entirely, their eyes fixed upon the colossal stone structure while some stood frozen, others staggered backward, and a few simply stared in disbelief.

The morale that had carried them through a suicidal mission shattered instantly because the sight before them wasn't something they could understand.

Their captain, their coordinator, the man who had led them through countless operations, the man who had taught them, guided them, and protected them, had just been swallowed by a mountain.

One of the masked shinobi unconsciously took a step backward, then another, as fear spread through the enemy ranks faster than any order could contain.

Murakami noticed it immediately, and so did Takeda, whose eyes sharpened as he barked, "Press the attack!"

The command exploded across the battlefield instantly, and Sakumo moved, the scarred Jonin moved, and the Konoha formation surged forward like a released spring.

Murakami's hands slowly lowered from the clapped position, the tension in his shoulders easing only slightly as the last traces of chakra threads dissipated into the fractured ground.

For a moment, he simply stood there, eyes fixed on the colossal formation ahead of him.

With the technique complete, he could feel it, an empty, hollow drain echoing through his body like something had been pulled out of him and never fully returned.

His chakra control was precise, refined to the point where he could manipulate fine threads without waste, yet this technique had still demanded everything he had at that moment.

Not partial output. Not a sustained flow. Total commitment.

The entire reservoir, shaped, extended, and released through Will alone.

'So that's the cost,' he thought calmly, not with regret, but with observation.

His gaze traced the structure again, noting how the earth had not simply been raised, but compressed, folded, and forced into itself through layered directional pressure.

It wasn't a simple large-scale Earth Release technique, nor was it merely chakra thread manipulation, it was coordination of the two.

Linking multiple points of terrain into a single unified system and then imposing will across all of them simultaneously.

A networked Earth Release construct.

A field technique.

Murakami exhaled slowly as he finally let his arms fall completely to his sides, the faintest hint of satisfaction crossing his expression as he took in the sight of what he had created.

Murakami began classifying the technique in his mind almost automatically, stripping away the spectacle and reducing it to its functional components.

It was a high-output Earth Release technique, meaning it demanded an extreme amount of chakra to execute, far beyond normal battlefield usage and closer to a single decisive burst than a sustained ability.

It also qualified as large-scale environmental manipulation, since its effect wasn't limited to shaping a single formation or structure, but instead extended across the battlefield itself, altering terrain on a massive scale.

The key difference lay in the chakra-thread assisted nature transformation amplification.

Rather than directly shaping the earth through continuous chakra output, the threads acted as extensions of his intent, allowing his control to propagate outward into multiple points of the terrain at once, multiplying both range and precision.

It also functioned as a multi-node intent synchronization system, where instead of controlling one section of earth at a time, he linked multiple points of the battlefield together under a single command structure, making the entire area respond simultaneously to one unified will.

And above all else, it was a chakra exhaustion–type technique, meaning it consumed nearly his entire chakra reserve in a single execution.

Not something that could be woven into prolonged combat or used repeatedly in quick succession, but a one-time, all-in release designed for decisive moments.

It was a battlefield-ending execution technique, powerful enough to decide an entire engagement, but costly enough that using it left no room for error or continuation afterward.

His eyes narrowed slightly as he stored the conclusion away. 'A finisher,' he decided.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Then, as silence continued to stretch across the broken battlefield, Murakami tilted his head slightly upward, gaze shifting beyond the dust-filled sky as a new thought surfaced in his mind.

If chakra threads could carry intent through earth… then what about air?

His eyes narrowed with quiet curiosity.

Air was less dense, more fluid, more responsive. If earth could be shaped through anchored intent and structural guidance… then wind could become something far more unpredictable.

More flexible? More lethal?

A faint breath left his lips as the idea settled deeper into his thoughts. 'What kind of technique… could I create with that?'

Author's Note:

Just a quick one for everyone reading.

With this arc, I've basically established Murakami's direction when it comes to technique development going forward. From here on out, he's moving away from traditional hand seals and leaning fully into a different style of jutsu creation, one based on Will and Intent, expressed and carried through his chakra threads.

That means his techniques won't rely on structured seal sequences anymore. Instead, what matters for him is understanding the concept behind a technique, shaping it through chakra, and then projecting it through intent rather than hand seal formula.

So going forward, think of his fighting style as less "performing jutsu" and more "imposing will on reality through chakra."

Just wanted to make that clear so the direction stays understandable as things evolve.

Next chapters will start building on this properly.
