"Are you cold?" Gabriel's voice came from beside me. We were still driving to wherever he planned on taking me. The window was down, the breeze hitting my face in a way that should have felt refreshing, but didn't.
I turned my head slightly. "No. It's fine."
Everything felt numb and quiet, like I was watching myself from somewhere far away. I didn't notice the sun or the sky or the way the wind tugged at my hair. I didn't really notice anything at all. Maybe I had become empty, because there was nothing growing inside me anymore and nothing left to hold on to. I hadn't protected her. I couldn't protect anything.
The windows slid up suddenly, making me flinch, and a soft hum followed as the heater turned on.
"You're shivering," he said.
