Damian's Pov
The city rushes past in jagged streaks of gray and gold, buildings blurred by speed. I grip the wheel tighter than necessary. Four days. Four days since Elle cut me off completely. Blocked me everywhere. Not a single word.
I went to her apartment this morning, hoping, praying to catch her sneaking out or something. Maybe corner her and make her answer me.
But Camila opened the door instead. She had answered, pretending not to know a thing.
"She traveled, sir," she said, all rehearsed calm. "I don't know when she'll return."
"You're not yet ready for work? You plan on coming in late?" I asked, but seeing her fidgeting. I pause. No. I don't want her scared. "I could wait. Drop you off, if you like."
"No, sir. My cab is almost here. Thank you for the offer."
Every word a lie. I feel it pressing into my chest, suffocating.
