At breakfast, Axiel slid into the seat beside Clara, his easy smile softening her morning nerves. Ethan, without a word, chose the opposite end of the table, directly facing them.
After a few minutes of polite chatter, Mr. Ashford set down his coffee cup and leaned back in his chair.
"So," he said, eyes flicking between the newlyweds, "where are you two going for your honeymoon?"
Clara's fork froze mid air. She glanced at Ethan. He looked at her for a bit too long before answering, "We would rather wait. There are some things I need to take care of first."
The words sat heavy between them. Clara forced a small nod and excused herself, mumbling something about errands.
Axiel followed her toward the stairs. "Will you be coming back?" he asked, his tone hesitant, like he was bracing for a no.
She crouched to his level, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. "Of course I will." Then, on impulse, she kissed his temple. He smiled shyly and nodded, as she walked away.
From the dining room, Ethan watched their exchange, his expression complicated. He was a little jealous of Axiel.
