Maya's POV
"Get the paramedics in here!" the detective shouts. "Now!"
Through the glass, I watch officers perform CPR on Vanessa. Her body lies limp on the floor. Lips turning blue.
"She's not breathing," one officer says.
"Keep trying," another orders.
Paramedics burst in. Take over. Inject something into Vanessa's arm. Pump her chest. Breathe air into her lungs.
"Come on," a paramedic urges. "Come on, stay with us."
I should feel nothing. This woman poisoned my mother. Poisoned me. Tried to steal my daughter. Destroyed my entire life.
But watching her die, I feel something unexpected.
Pity.
"She's back!" the paramedic announces. "I've got a pulse!"
They load Vanessa onto a stretcher. Rush her out of the police station. Sirens wailing.
Catherine appears beside me. "That was insane."
"She tried to kill herself," I say numbly. "With the same poison Patricia used on my mother."
"Poetic justice?" Catherine suggests.
