Chapter 60 - The Trial Begins

Derek's POV

"You're lying." I stare at Judge Henderson through the glass. "You didn't help kill my mother."

"I wish I was lying." The judge's hands shake. "But James Walsh paid me fifty thousand dollars to change the accident report. To make sure no investigation happened. I was a young prosecutor back then. Drowning in debt. I took the money."

My stomach turns. "You let a murderer go free."

"I let many murderers go free." He leans closer. "James owned half the judges in this city. Including me. That's why I'm here, Derek. To warn you."

"Warn me about what?"

"Don't mention your mother's murder in court tomorrow." His voice drops to a whisper. "If you do, powerful people will make sure you never leave prison. People who worked with James. People who have everything to lose."

"Are you threatening me?"
