Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: Chakra Research

Chapter 39: Chakra Research

Jiraiya shifted uneasily in his seat.

To his left sat Minato Namikaze, his golden-haired apprentice who shone like the morning sun. To his right sat Hatake Kakashi—the student destined to become Minato's own disciple.

The scene felt strangely poetic.

Although Minato had made an odd comment when Aizen had first entrusted Kakashi to him—something about "watching over that dangerous kid"—Jiraiya thought the two of them got along well enough.

Out of everyone present, he was the only one who hadn't interacted much with Aizen Sosuke.

Gama Sage. Hero. Legendary Sannin—titles he mostly gave himself, but even so, he had earned his fame through countless battles. Yet now, sitting between his two brilliant successors, Jiraiya couldn't help but feel out of place.

As Aizen began his lecture, the atmosphere grew still and heavy, the kind that made even seasoned shinobi hold their breath.

Jiraiya tried to listen attentively, but after a few sentences, his mind went blank. The words Aizen spoke felt like they came from another world—complex, abstract, utterly foreign.

Still, he reminded himself that as a senior, he had to set an example. Even if he didn't understand a single theory Aizen was discussing, his practical experience was second to none. If it came down to combat, Aizen couldn't possibly match him—or so he told himself.

Then Aizen's next statement sent a chill down his spine.

> "Chakra," Aizen began, his voice calm and measured, "is the product of a perfect mixture between spiritual and physical energy. Unlike ordinary physical strength—also a mixture of spiritual and physical forces—chakra has been refined and balanced. (The Book of Lin)."

He waved his hand, and a glowing Void character formed in the air before him.

"According to one theory," Aizen continued, "Kaguya Ōtsutsuki and the Sage of Six Paths granted chakra to humanity. Another claims chakra always existed within humans but remained dormant and undiscovered. (Boruto)."

He paused, letting the characters shimmer like floating ink.

"Based on its properties, the latter theory sounds persuasive—but I believe the former holds greater weight."

Jiraiya tilted his head. "And why's that?"

Aizen's eyes glinted behind his glasses. "Because chakra's very structure—a one to one fusion of spiritual and physical energy—didn't occur naturally. Ordinary people, even trained shinobi, can only sense or cultivate one aspect effectively. Achieving a perfect equilibrium requires an external catalyst. That catalyst was Kaguya's intervention."

He glanced at the floating symbols again.

"If chakra had merely been discovered, we would have detailed records of its development—texts, experiments, traces of progress. But there are none. Kaguya and the Sage of Six Paths appeared suddenly, without historical precedent. Therefore, I propose that chakra is not native to this world—it is an alien energy introduced by them."

The room fell silent.

Minato's eyes narrowed thoughtfully, Kakashi listened intently, and Jiraiya blinked several times, trying to keep up.

"Chakra," Aizen went on, "acts as an energy carrier—a medium far superior to either spiritual or physical force alone. It allowed shinobi to surpass the priests and samurai who came before them."

Then his tone deepened, growing analytical.

"Now we reach the core concept: chakra's variability and its innate anomalies."

He gestured, pulling the glowing words closer.

"Tell me," Aizen asked gently, "based on the skywriting technique I've just displayed—how many chakra transformations or nature manipulations did I use to maintain those characters?"

Kakashi frowned slightly. "None?"

Aizen smiled. "Correct. I didn't use any transformations at all. What you saw was chakra's natural structure—combined only with minor applications of sealing and lightning techniques to stabilize its form."

Jiraiya blinked. "You can do that without elemental conversion?"

"Of course." Aizen nodded. "Chakra's plasticity is limitless. However, it has a powerful tendency to return to its origin. When two forms of similar chakra meet, the stronger one assimilates and overrides the weaker. It is both creative and destructive in nature. (The Book of the Master)."

He paused for a moment, letting the weight of his words settle.

"From this principle," he said slowly, "I can theorize that if a primary signal—a chakra source with supreme authority—were to appear, no ordinary ninjutsu could harm it. Chakra cannot resist a higher form of itself. Our techniques, our power, our entire system of ninjutsu… would be rendered obsolete."

Jiraiya's brows furrowed. "You mean… like a hierarchy of energy?"

"Precisely."

Aizen's eyes gleamed. "If chakra follows this principle, then the evolution of ninjutsu is simple. We don't need to create new forms or elements. We only need to refine authority and purity—improving the quality of chakra itself until it transcends the ordinary spectrum."

He lifted his hand again, and five glowing symbols appeared behind him—the elemental symbols for Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, and Lightning—followed by two more, shadowy and luminous.

"After examining the five primary chakra natures, as well as Yin and Yang Release, I have begun to estimate the parameters of the original signal—the primordial authority from which all chakra flows."

His voice softened, yet carried a quiet power.

"And that," he concluded, "will be the focus of our next research—"

"Um… Sosuke."

Jiraiya hesitated before raising his hand.

Looking at Aizen Sosuke speaking so confidently at the front of the room, he couldn't help but feel… strange. It wasn't embarrassment, exactly—more like the awkwardness of a grown man surrounded by prodigies.

To his left, Minato Namikaze sat with composed curiosity, eyes gleaming like sunlight reflecting off a blade. To his right, Hatake Kakashi—the boy destined to be Minato's future student—watched with quiet intensity.

Caught between the two of them, Jiraiya felt an odd mix of pride and unease. He was the senior here—the Sannin, the hero of Mount Myoboku—yet at that moment, even he felt out of place.

Still, when Aizen noticed his raised hand, he didn't show the slightest irritation or mockery. Instead, he adjusted his glasses and spoke softly.

"What is it, Jiraiya-senpai? Would you like to add something to what I said?"

Jiraiya scratched his cheek, his tone hesitant. "What's the point of all this stuff you're talking about? I don't get it."

Aizen smiled faintly. "What I'm describing is, at its core, a way of understanding ourselves and the world. If our bodies are weapons, is it better to act without awareness—or with it?"

His tone remained patient, almost soothing.

"If we simply use chakra without understanding it," he continued, "it's like swinging a blade in the dark—wasting power without precision. But when we grasp its essence, every movement becomes intentional, efficient. That is the meaning of knowledge."

"Then," Jiraiya said, leaning forward with slight interest, "what about chakra transformations? Can you explain those in more detail?"

"Of course," Aizen replied, smiling as if he had been waiting for that question. "In fact, that's what I planned to discuss next."

He turned and wrote a series of glowing words in the air, his chakra forming symbols with elegant precision.

"The changes in chakra are not as crude as people assume. They involve delicate shifts in proportion and structure—micro adjustments that determine form, density, and element."

As he spoke, the luminous script in the air shifted colors, demonstrating the fine variations between elemental affinities.

Minato and Kakashi both observed with fascination, occasionally testing the theories by channeling their own chakra. The air shimmered faintly from their experiments.

Jiraiya, meanwhile, kept interrupting with offbeat questions—some trivial, some redundant—but Aizen never once frowned or showed impatience.

He simply continued to explain each point with calm composure, even when the questions barely made sense.

Finally, Jiraiya fell silent for a moment, then spoke awkwardly.

"Am I… being too much trouble?"

Aizen shook his head, smiling gently. "Not at all. For any teacher, there's nothing happier than guiding those who truly wish to learn."

Jiraiya looked away, visibly flustered. "Even if… even if that student's the worst in class?"

Aizen adjusted his glasses again, his tone suddenly matter of fact. "Not necessarily. If someone is a complete failure who refuses to change, I won't waste my time."

Jiraiya blinked, momentarily taken aback by the bluntness.

But before the words could sting, Aizen's expression softened again—his voice calm, almost luminous.

"But if a student, no matter how lost or weak, sincerely asks for help… I will teach them. Again and again, as many times as needed. Because I will never reject a heart that yearns for progress. That thirst for growth is the ladder of humanity. Only time will reveal what they become—and I look forward to seeing that future."

Jiraiya sat quietly, staring at him.

"I see…" he murmured. "I think I understand."

And in that instant, he truly believed he did.

As Aizen continued to lecture, Jiraiya leaned back and gazed at the sky through the open window. His mind drifted, a blur of half formed thoughts and uneasy clarity.

So… was it really just coincidence?

The white haori, the sword, the calm authority—were they all mere accidents of character?

Aizen Sosuke was such an ideal man—calm, kind, endlessly rational. How could such a person be anything but genuine?

If someone like him is a lie, Jiraiya thought, then what in this world is worth believing in?

The Third Hokage must have thought the same. Even knowing there was something unsettling about Aizen, the old man still chose to trust him—still allowed his moonlight to guide Konoha.

He taught the young, balanced the village's politics, calmed disputes, and carried himself with humility.

How could anyone hate that?

Jiraiya clenched his fist softly in his lap. He could never confront that kind of light.

To tear away the dreamlike veil Aizen cast over everyone—it would be too cruel.

So instead, he made his choice.

If you truly mean well, Aizen Sosuke…

He looked at the man smiling gently in the sunlight.

Then I'll trust you.

I'll bet everything that you won't harm Konoha.

That's enough for me.

Jiraiya closed his eyes. The classroom filled with Aizen's soft voice, and for a moment, even the air seemed to shimmer with quiet peace.
