Chapter 34 - Back

Chapter 30 — The Hardest Return

The school gates felt heavier than usual that morning. Jay walked in, head down, clutching her bag like it could shield her from the world.

It wasn't just any day—Keifer was back.

Her heart thudded painfully in her chest, but her steps carried her past him, her eyes fixed stubbornly on the ground.

Keifer stood near the entrance, calm as ever, his sharp gaze scanning the crowd… and landing on her.

"Jay," he said softly, stepping toward her.

She didn't look up. Her breathing quickened, throat tight. "I… I don't want to talk."

The Chase

Keifer's brow furrowed, but he didn't push too hard. "Please. Just hear me out. I need you to understand."

Jay's steps quickened. She dodged past students, rounded a corner, and practically ran to the quiet courtyard at the back of the school.

Keifer followed, silently, giving her space, but never letting her out of his sight. "Jay… stop running. I'm not going anywhere."

She finally turned, tears spilling over, raw and unstoppable. "I… I missed you, but I don't know if I can—if I should trust you anymore!"

Crying Without Words

Keifer opened his mouth to explain, to say the words she had waited months for—but Jay couldn't hear them. She sobbed into her hands, shaking. Her chest ached, the months of longing, fear, and doubt colliding at once.

"I—Jay, please… I know I've been gone, but everything I did… it was for us. I wasn't trying to hurt you."

Jay just shook her head, her tears soaking her sleeves. "I… I don't know… I can't—"

He stepped closer cautiously, lowering his voice. "Then let me just stay here. Let me hold you, even if you won't forgive me yet."

Jay couldn't speak, couldn't protest, couldn't do anything but let herself fall into the storm of her emotions.

Confession Through Tears

Keifer gently cupped her face, tilting her chin so she had no choice but to meet his eyes. "I don't expect you to forgive me today. I just… I needed you to know that I'm here now. And I'm not leaving. Not ever."

Jay's tears fell faster. "But… what if I can't trust you anymore? What if I… I can't—"

"You can," he said softly. "In your own time. I'll wait. I'll do whatever it takes."

Her shoulders shook violently as the sobs wracked her body, but the words, quiet and earnest, sank in. Maybe not completely yet, but a little.

A Moment of Stillness

They stood there, surrounded by distant school noise, yet it was as if the world had stopped. Jay leaned slightly into him, still sobbing but letting herself feel a flicker of relief. Keifer stayed silent, brushing stray strands of hair from her face, holding her close without pressing for anything more.

"I… I missed you," she finally whispered, voice breaking.

"I know," he replied. "And I missed you too. So much. I just… needed you to know that I'm back. That I've never stopped thinking about you."

Jay's heart ached, a mixture of relief, fear, and longing twisting inside her. She wanted to stay, to collapse completely into him—but doubt still lingered. Could she trust him again? Could she allow herself to feel this hope?

Lingering Uncertainty

Keifer rested his forehead against hers. "I'll wait for you. I don't care how long it takes."

Jay nodded slowly, letting him hold her, letting herself feel the warmth of his presence—but still crying, still unsure, still fragile.

And as the final bell rang in the distance, signaling the day moving forward, Jay realized something: her heart was torn between fear and hope, but at least he was here now. And maybe, that was enough… for today.

Chapter 30 closes with Jay in Keifer's arms, crying, unsure of what the future holds, but starting to feel the tiniest spark of trust and relief. The calm after months of absence is fragile, but real.
