WHOOSH!!
Kong put his whole body into the throw. He aimed at the giant standing in the mountain forest and hurled the wooden spear with one savage motion. It screamed through the air with a sharp sonic crack and was in front of the giant in an instant.
The giant didn't dodge.
He simply let it hit. The spear struck his chest, the impact rippling outward — trees below swaying wildly, branches thrashing — but the giant himself didn't budge a single inch.
The wooden spear clattered to the ground. A new wariness entered Kong's eyes.
The defensive strength of this opponent wasn't something the large beasts of Skull Island could match. This was a foe worth taking seriously.
"ROOAAAR!!" Kong reached out and ripped two more trees from the earth, grinding them together into a pair of rough spears. Then his legs drove into the ground.
THUD!
He launched himself skyward in a massive leap, hurtling straight for the distant giant.
Close-quarters combat was where he thrived. He wanted to see exactly what this giant was made of.
"How long do you reckon it takes?" Jared pushed his sunglasses up his nose, watched Kong sail through the air, and turned to Old De.
"One minute. Five bucks," Old De said immediately.
"I'll take two minutes." Jared grinned.
"You think it takes that guy two whole minutes to deal with Kong?" Old De raised an eyebrow.
Back in Mexico, that Ultra Old Man had chased off Godzilla in about a minute, then beaten Rodan half to death on the side. At the South Pole, facing an enemy that even Godzilla couldn't match head-on, the old man had turned King Ghidorah into alien sashimi with a single giant light wheel , total time, under three minutes.
"He's got no grudge against Kong, so he's not going for the kill."
"Besides, you know how he is." Jared sounded completely certain. Five bucks. Already as good as won.
Nearby, Dr. Ilene Andrews had been listening to these two place bets, and several exasperated lines promptly appeared on her forehead.
"Kong is an incredibly powerful Titan."
"I don't think he'll lose easily to that giant," she said.
She hadn't witnessed the Mexico battle firsthand, and footage of the South Pole fight was almost nonexistent. She knew the giant carried Titan-level strength, but the idea of him taking down Kong in this short a window seemed unlikely to her.
She knew Kong's power too well. This great ape Titan was friendly enough toward humans, but once his temper ignited, that strength was something else entirely. Add in his exceptional agility and the fact that he was fighting on home turf , there was no way he'd be completely steamrolled.
"Stop talking, just place your bet!" Jared waved toward the battlefield and called back at Ilene.
In the distant forest, Kong had already closed on the giant. The two wooden spears were a split second from connecting , and still the giant barely moved. Just a slight shift of his body. Then, the instant Kong arrived: left leg planted, right leg lifted, and a full roundhouse kick whipped out.
BOOM!!
Kong took it dead-on with no ground beneath him to push off of. His massive body flew back along the exact arc of his leap , but faster.
He crashed into a mountainside. The impact from that enormous weight sent tremors rolling across the entire island. Rocks sheered off the slopes in sheets, cracking down on Kong's head one after another, and his already disoriented ape eyes went even murkier.
Was that... kung fu?
This guy could use kung fu? Like a human?
Over the years on Skull Island, Kong had watched humans use all kinds of techniques in battle. After asking Jia about it, he'd learned those things were called kung fu , moves, forms, whatever. He'd fumbled through trying to learn it himself for a while, never made sense of it, and eventually gave up.
But seeing kung fu from an alien?
Did that even make sense?
"ROOAAAR!!" Kong rubbed his aching gut, bellowed, and wrenched himself free of the mountainside. He wasn't buying it. All this kung fu business , nothing beat a straight-up brawl!
But before he could launch another attack, the giant moved first. Heavy footsteps — THUMP THUMP THUMP , pressed deep into the earth. Every step left a crater. The gap between them was closing steadily, and whatever lived behind those bright eyes gave nothing away.
What was this guy planning?
The moment Kong saw the giant walking toward him, he dropped into a defensive stance, coiled and ready for whatever came next.
The gap shrank to under four hundred meters. Then the giant raised one hand slowly. Light gathered in his palm in a wide, spreading mass, and with a measured motion, it began to drift toward Kong.
"ROOAAAR! Roo roo!" Kong saw the light specks floating toward him and scrambled sideways. Too strange. He wasn't about to let those things near him.
Watching him dodge, the giant picked up the spread, the light expanding like a net cast wide, washing over Kong from all sides.
"ROOAAAR!"
Nowhere left to run. The golden light washed over him.
He'd expected bombs. But when the specks touched his skin, they didn't explode , they seeped in, melting into his body, and with them came a warmth he hadn't felt in a very long time. Like being small again. Like being home.
He had once had a family...
Wait.
No.
This thing was messing with his head.
"ROOAAAR!" Kong forced himself against the Full Moon Light Waves and roared, shaking the thought loose before it could take hold. He was a Titan, and a smart one. His own willpower fought back. The Full Moon Light Waves couldn't force compliance , not against a mind like his.
Natsuki wasn't surprised.
These stubborn ones were all the same. Godzilla's temper was even worse than Kong's.
One step, and he was right in front of Kong. Right hand still sustaining the Full Moon Light Waves. Left hand open, palm flat.
Before Kong could react, the palm connected with the side of his skull.
SMACK!!
Kong had tried to dodge. His thoughts were a scrambled mess and his reaction came half a beat late. The blow landed on the left side of his head with a deep, heavy force. His whole body rocked sideways. His skull rang.
"Rooaaar?" Kong's eyes cleared, slightly. SMACK!! "ROAR!" SMACK!! "Oww..."
Two full rounds of that combination , Full Moon Light Waves flooding in, palm cracking home , and most of the fight drained right out of him. What remained was something cleaner. Clearer. A full, honest recognition: this giant was genuinely stronger. There was no winning here. His eyes went completely calm.
Watching from a distance, Ilene stood with her mouth wide open.
This was a little outside her understanding.
