Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: Jason’s Reward

Kristen's shimmering eyes flew open, almost unable to believe her ears.

What… what did he just say?

Like an earnest student unashamed to ask, Jason's large palm brushed the lips he'd reddened and swollen with his kisses. "Whose kissing is better?"

Warm breath, faint with smoke, wrapped over her.

Kristen regretted it a little—but it was too late.

"You," she mumbled, voice muffled, not daring to look at him.

Satisfied, the corner of Jason's mouth ticked up; he dipped to press another kiss. "Honest children get rewards."

Kristen's red lips pulled into a stiff smile, while her heart trembled.

Don't tell me he has some… special kink—or is a total pervert?!

Kristen stayed three days in the hospital, and Jason personally brought her home upon discharge.

Aunt He didn't know what had happened, only that she'd been hospitalized. Assuming Kristen had fallen ill, she fussed over her with tenderness and hurried to the kitchen to prepare a fortifying lunch.

Upstairs, Kristen took a long shower to wash off the hospital's disinfectant smell, then spritzed a little perfume. Her mood brightened.

Just as she stepped out of the bathroom, Jason came in.

Her heart skipped for no reason. Thinking of that kiss at the hospital made her flush and thump inside.

Was what had to come… finally coming?

Jason stopped before her without a word, took her hand, and led her out.

Kristen blinked. So… she'd overthought it?

Hand in hand, he led her downstairs. They passed the dining room without stopping; he pushed open a small hidden door beside it—another tucked-away dining room.

Lunch was already laid out on the table, but there was only one place setting.

"You're not eating?" Kristen sat, looking up at him. Beyond curiosity, unease flickered in her eyes.

Sensing it, Jason set a big hand on her crown and gently ruffled twice. "Focus on your meal. Once you're full, sit and enjoy the show."

With that, he stepped out, leaving the door ajar—just enough to see the dining table from her seat.

Kristen had no idea what he intended. After days of pale hospital food, the rich lunch in front of her was irresistible, and she couldn't help digging in.

Halfway through, a familiar voice drifted from outside—

"Jason, you're too kind—inviting me and Grace to lunch."

Kristen's body went rigid. A chill shot up her spine, and the basement scene flashed through her mind. She shivered.

Jason invited Finn and Grace?

What on earth was he planning?

Unable to parse his intentions, she heard Jason's deep voice from the dining room: "Sit. Aunt He, serve."

Dishes clinked as the staff brought food; then quiet returned.

From her spot, Kristen could peer through the crack and see Finn and Grace seated at the dining table, both dressed in matching tones like a couple's outfit.

At the sight of those two faces, an impulse flared in her to upend the soup tureen onto both their heads.

Scumbag. Cheap woman.

Finn looked over the bountiful spread and smiled. "Jason, an eel banquet today."

On the table: "Charcoal-Grilled Eel," "Braised Eel," "Eel Soup," "Garlic Eel," and "Sizzling Eel Shreds."

Five dishes—nothing but eel.

Grace didn't like eel, but since the host was Jason, she forced a light laugh. "Eel is so nourishing. Mr. Jin, you're very good to Finn."
