"Isn't the most important thing for the skill trial the flavor of the dish itself? I am confident I can conquer your palate with fried rice."
Okabe said seriously, word by word, looking at Fumio Daimidō with a calm expression.
"Are there any leftover ingredients in the kitchen?"
Seeing Okabe's confident look, Soma Yukihira, who had been at a loss, also reacted.
That's right, there was still the trick of using the leftover ingredients in the other party's kitchen!
As long as there were ingredients, he could make a dish that would pass.
So he looked at Fumio Daimidō with bright eyes, asking about the remaining ingredients in the kitchen.
"There are, there are, but do you want to cook with those scraps and semi-finished products?"
Hearing Soma Yukihira's words, Fumio Daimidō was silent for a moment.
"That's right, I'll also take the skill trial. Where is the kitchen?"
Seeing that there really were leftover ingredients in the kitchen, the corners of Soma Yukihira's mouth lifted slightly, and he spoke in an impassioned tone.
"Two interesting newcomers have arrived this year."
Taki Kakizaki watched the scene unfold not far away, an interested expression on her face.
"I heard the quality of this year's new students is the highest in twenty years, with many genius chefs appearing."
The girl with cherry-pink hair spoke, looking at Okabe's and Soma Yukihira's backs with a probing gaze.
She reached out and turned on all the lights in the kitchen.
Okabe and Soma Yukihira stood by Fumio Daimidō's side, sizing up the Polaris Dormitory kitchen, the place that would carry their memories for the next six years.
"What the heck, it looks completely different from the outside. The kitchen is pretty nice!"
Soma Yukihira's voice rang out. As he spoke, he reached out and gently rubbed the clean stove.
"Indeed, it's quite impressive."
Okabe felt the same.
Although he had been prepared, he couldn't help but be surprised when he truly saw it.
Compared to the grim, haunted-house-like appearance of Polaris Dormitory from the outside, the scene inside was completely different.
This kitchen, in particular, could rival those of some large restaurants.
"Listen up, what I hate most are little brats who are all bluff! Do you know how many students' cooking I've tasted to this day? Do you think a dish made in a hurry will pass? And one of them is just a plain egg fried rice."
Fumio Daimidō looked at the two boisterous boys with subtle displeasure on her face.
She had been at Polaris Dormitory for decades, tasting countless dishes in that time.
The dishes of the Tōtsuki Elite Ten were just average to her, so how could she have much expectation for a dish from a new student's dorm entrance assessment.
"There's only a little bit of onion and other vegetables left, some eggs, flour, and the seasonings are quite complete, and then..."
"Hmm... this is more than enough."
After a quick tour of the kitchen, Soma Yukihira returned to Fumio Daimidō.
"Huh? What did you say..."
Fumio Daimidō stopped her chatter and looked at Soma Yukihira in surprise.
"Madam Fumio Daimidō, the Polaris Dormitory manager, please wait a moment!"
Taking the bandage from his hand and tying it around his head, Soma Yukihira opened his arms to Fumio Daimidō, revealing an incredibly confident smile.
"Boom!"
However, at that moment, the sound of flames flaring up from the stove drew the attention of the two people who were talking.
"Okabe, you've already started cooking?"
"I was bored, so I started early."
Soma Yukihira walked over with a somewhat surprised expression.
Just now, while he was checking the remaining ingredients, Okabe had already taken the only leftover rice in the kitchen and retrieved three eggs from the refrigerator.
"It's just a simple egg fried rice, anyway. You scramble the egg in the wok, then add the rice and stir-fry until fragrant. Then you season it with soy sauce and other condiments, and sprinkle some chopped green onions before it's done. It's an utterly mundane dish."
Watching Okabe light the stove, Fumio Daimidō walked towards him as she spoke.
If Soma Yukihira creating a dish with the leftover ingredients could still spark some interest in her, then Okabe's egg fried rice truly left her with no desire to comment.
"Is it really just ordinary egg fried rice?"
Soma Yukihira was also puzzled.
Many had been eliminated during the entrance exam for their lack of skill, so those who remained should all be elites.
It was unlikely for there to be a slacker among them.
For a moment, he even disregarded his own cooking and just stood two meters away from Okabe, observing.
"The heat from this stove isn't bad. It's already on par with a restaurant's."
Okabe passed his hand over the wok to feel the heat, a satisfied look on his face.
The next moment, he didn't hesitate.
He heated the wok, poured in oil, and directly added the leftover rice to start stir-frying.
"This guy... he actually added the rice directly?"
Fumio Daimidō said she wasn't paying attention, but she was actually observing Okabe with the corner of her eye.
When she saw that he didn't add the egg liquid first and then the rice as she had said, a curious look appeared on her face.
The roaring flames greedily licked the bottom of the wok, and the temperature inside rose sharply.
The rice, which still had some moisture, quickly became oily and dry under the high heat of the wok and oil.
With the turn of the spatula, the grains became distinct, shimmering with a faint oily sheen as they trembled in the wok.
Then, the eggs that had been lying quietly on the side appeared in Okabe's hand.
"So fast!"
Fumio Daimidō cried out in shock.
With her eyesight, she had only seen a fleeting afterimage just now.
And that wasn't all.
The moment the egg was in his hand, Okabe tossed it into the sky, tapping it with the edge of the spatula.
"Crack~"
The sound of the eggshell cracking was heard, and the egg liquid flowed out.
Okabe waved the spatula to scoop out the yolk and drop it into the wok, while the egg white fell evenly into a bowl prepared on the side.
"What! To extract the yolk from a high-speed fall in an instant, and control the back of the spatula to hit it so the egg white lands precisely in the bowl—what an incredible technique!"
Fumio Daimidō was someone who had seen big scenes, but this was the first time she had ever witnessed such a display.
Just a small serving of egg fried rice, a dish she had held no expectations for, was now making her feel a sense of anticipation under Okabe's divine cooking skills.
An inexplicable flush appeared on her cheeks as well.
With a flick of his wrist, the yolk in the spatula didn't go directly into the wok but was tossed into the air again.
With a wave of his spatula in mid-air, he precisely broke the yolk, and at the same time, he tossed the wok with his left hand, sending the oily rice soaring to meet and perfectly blend with the golden egg liquid in mid-air.
"Sizzle, sizzle, sizzle, sizzle~"
At the same time, a faint sizzling sound came from the sky.
"What... what is that sound?"
Soma Yukihira suddenly looked up at the rice mixed with egg yolk and then saw the oil on its surface quickly solidifying the egg yolk it touched.
The sound just now was the reaction between the hot oil and the egg yolk!
A few seconds later, the fried rice fell back into the wok, only to be tossed into the air again.
After repeating this several times, the white rice gradually turned golden, emitting an incredibly enticing, savory aroma.
He turned off the stove, added a little salt and pepper with a flick of his spatula for seasoning, and used the residual heat in the wok to quickly toss it, perfectly integrating the seasoning with the Golden Fried Rice, instantly sealing in the flavor and aroma of all the ingredients.
This was flame cooking, the essence of Chinese cuisine!
"During my three years at Ryōzanpaku, Golden Fried Rice was the dish I made the most. Master Shio would have me make this Golden Fried Rice for his assessment almost every six months. There were no special requirements, only that I had to improve slightly from the last time."
Holding the fried rice, Okabe came before Fumio Daimidō, his voice calm.
"Golden Fried Rice accumulated over three years."
Looking at the fragrant, golden rice on the plate, the blush on Fumio Daimidō's face became more pronounced, and a strong sense of anticipation welled up in her heart.
"Can I have a taste, too?"
At the same time, Soma Yukihira raised his hand.
His face was also filled with anticipation.
The technique Okabe had just displayed was simply astonishing; he had never seen anyone make fried rice like that.
"Please do."
To this, Okabe just made a welcoming gesture.
"What a joke! He only used two ingredients from start to finish, egg and rice. No matter how flashy the technique, it can't change the fact that it's just a regular fried rice!"
"But…"
"Why does this ordinary fried rice give off such an irresistible aroma, making me want to reach for my chopsticks uncontrollably!"
The tip of the slender chopsticks touched the golden fried rice, lifting it lightly.
There were no scattered bits of egg; the yolk clung evenly to every grain of rice.
"What amazing heat control, to have integrated the egg yolk and rice to this extent!"
A slightly shocked voice came from Soma Yukihira.
The next moment, he didn't hesitate to put the golden rice at the tip of his chopsticks into his mouth.
"So… deli… cious!"
A mysterious blush appeared on Fumio Daimidō's face.
She stared straight at the Golden Fried Rice before her, clearly completely immersed in it.
"Even though it's just ordinary egg fried rice, it doesn't have the separated texture of egg and rice, nor the greasiness that's unavoidable in usual fried rice. With a light bite, the rice grains bounce lightly on the tongue, and the paper-thin egg coating shatters in an instant, like tiny compressed flavor bombs, releasing the ultimate umami and fragrance upon being bitten!"
Fumio Daimidō closed her eyes to savor it carefully.
It was the most essential, richest, and mellowest flavor of the egg, instantly locked in and stimulated by the hot oil and precise heat, as if she had eaten a cloud—light and fluffy.
In addition to that, there was the rice itself.
Fumio Daimidō picked up a single grain of rice and observed it closely.
She saw that the surface of the rice was incredibly evenly coated with egg yolk, and after peeling off that thin layer of egg, the inside still maintained the rice's proper resilience.
"What an incredible little brat, to make such a delicious dish with just eggs and leftover rice..."
Putting another mouthful of Golden Fried Rice into her mouth, Fumio Daimidō had to hold onto the table to keep herself from falling.
"What a comforting flavor, it's as if my body and soul have been warmed…"
"The egg yolk releases a rich, charred fragrance under the stimulation of the oil's temperature, making one unable to help but sink into it…"
She closed her eyes, and when she appeared again, she was no longer in the Polaris Dormitory.
In its place was a sea of fluffiness.
Looking down, it was a chick magnified thousands of times, currently walking quickly through a vast countryside, and she was the only passenger on it.
But…
Lying on the fluffiness with her hands spread out, Fumio Daimidō felt as if she had returned to her childhood.
Lazing around all day doing nothing was a good choice too…
.
.
The sun was setting, and the endless night entered the house.
"By my calculations, Okabe-kun should have arrived at Polaris Dormitory by now."
On the way to Polaris Dormitory, Erina Nakiri, Hisako Arato, Megumi Tadokoro, and Ikaros were carrying large and small bags.
"Probably, but do we really not need to buy ingredients for Okabe-kun?"
Megumi Tadokoro said with some worry.
"The three of us bought a rich variety of ingredients, what's left will be enough for him to use. Based on my understanding of him, he's most likely thinking the same thing, otherwise he would have called us by now to buy some for him."
Hearing Megumi Tadokoro's words, Erina Nakiri put on an expression of 'a mother knows her son best.'
"Yes, Miss Tadokoro. For Okabe-kun, even if you called him to choose, he would hesitate because the assessment hasn't given a specific theme. It's simpler for us to bring the ingredients back for him to pick from."
Hisako Arato nodded in agreement, then looked at the eaves of Polaris Dormitory faintly visible in the distance, her heart filled with anticipation.
A brand new junior high life was about to begin here!
.
.
"What a pleasant feeling. As I've gotten older, it's been a long time since I've felt this way."
After a long while, Fumio Daimidō opened her eyes.
"Alright, I approve your move-in."
"You'll be in room 202. Here are your keys."
Looking at Okabe, who was watching her with a relaxed expression, a smile appeared on Fumio Daimidō's face.
She then took out the key to room 202, which she had prepared long ago, from her pocket and handed it to him.
"Thank you. I'll head over now. Good luck, Soma."
Taking the key from Fumio Daimidō, Okabe looked at Soma Yukihira, who was tasting the fried rice.
After patting him on the shoulder, he turned and left the kitchen.
"He's like a monster, to be able to make such a flavor with just a simple fried rice. His technique has already reached a level that ordinary people can hardly aspire to. It's got me all fired up!"
The pure white headband fluttered freely in the air.
Soma Yukihira put down his spoon, his eyes filled with the light of excitement.
Before coming to Tōtsuki, he thought this was a cooking school where his old man taught home cooking, and he even had thoughts of not coming.
It wasn't until he came to Tōtsuki for the entrance exam that his impression of Tōtsuki changed.
And now, after tasting the dish Okabe casually made, he was shocked to realize that this school was full of hidden masters.
His heart was instantly filled with a strong fighting spirit to strive upwards.
"Soma Yukihira."
"What kind of surprise will you bring me?"
Watching Soma Yukihira, who had been stirred up by Okabe's dish, Fumio Daimidō crossed her arms, and her expectations for his cooking rose considerably.
When the Academy Director told her that this year's new students were of high quality, she hadn't paid it much mind, but now after tasting Okabe's dish, she kind of understood.
This batch of new students.
In three years, they will definitely be able to stir up a storm at Tōtsuki!
The heavy door was slowly pushed open, emitting a long creak.
"Ah, Okabe-kun, you're already here."
As soon as Hisako Arato walked in, she saw Okabe and Momo Akanegakubo coming out of the kitchen one after the other, a hint of surprise in her tone.
"You guys are finally back. To forget to bring ingredients, that's not like your usual style."
Okabe looked up at the sound.
It was Erina Nakiri and her group, so he walked up with a smile.
"I was a bit too excited thinking about moving in, and the road to Polaris Dormitory is a bit out of the way. I was so busy looking at the map to find the place that I completely missed the note about the dorm trial on the back."
"Besides, normal dorms don't require an entrance assessment, right? How could anyone possibly think of that under normal circumstances…"
Erina Nakiri explained with great helplessness.
Because this kind of thing was too rare, none of them were prepared, and they didn't even think about it when they came.
"Okabe-kun, you don't need to go out anymore. We bought extra of all kinds of ingredients. If you see anything you need, you can just take it."
Megumi Tadokoro said as she lifted the bag in her hand, showing the beef brisket and tomatoes to Okabe.
Then she realized she had been a bit too forward, so she retracted the bag with a slight blush, her voice growing smaller and smaller.
"You guys can use them yourselves. I've already passed the skill trial."
To this, Okabe just dangled the key he had just received in front of them.
"The key? Did you bring your own ingredients?"
"I made a Golden Fried Rice with the leftovers from the kitchen and passed smoothly."
Okabe summarized his cooking process, and in return received an admiring gaze from Megumi Tadokoro.
"That does sound like you."
Erina Nakiri couldn't help but complain.
She thought he would wait for them and use the ingredients they brought, but she didn't expect Okabe to directly use leftover rice and eggs to make fried rice, passing the assessment in a simple and brutal way.
"I'm going back to my room first. You guys good luck, too. There's another student in the kitchen taking the assessment. You can start after he's done."
As his voice fell, Okabe walked towards the second floor.
Momo Akanegakubo followed closely behind.
Ikaros saw this and her heart felt a little complicated, her head slightly lowered.
"202, this is it…"
Looking at the number on the door, Okabe opened it.
However, before he and Momo Akanegakubo could enter, the sound of a neighboring door opening was heard.
"You successfully passed the skill trial? With just a plate of egg fried rice?!"
The girl with cherry-pink hair walked out of her room.
Seeing Okabe holding the key and opening the door, she was a bit surprised, and then asked curiously.
"Why does it feel like you all look down on egg fried rice? That's an arrogant thought born from prejudice."
Hearing the pink-haired girl's words, Okabe pushed the door open but didn't immediately go in.
Instead, he stood there and retorted.
"Sorry, I didn't mean it like that. I just find it incredible that a simple dish like egg fried rice could pass the dorm entrance assessment."
"After all, the ingredients are eggs, rice, and green onions. They're all good ingredients, so there's definitely no problem with the taste. I personally like fried rice quite a bit, but as a dish to pass the skill trial, it feels a bit exaggerated…"
Hearing Okabe's somewhat dissatisfied words, the cherry-pink-haired girl hurriedly waved her hands.
Despite being older, she was being suppressed by a boy, which made her feel inexplicably ashamed.
"Actually, fried rice is the dish that best reveals a chef's skill. The simpler the dish, the more it tests a chef's fundamental skills."
Okabe turned around, his expression serious: "Control of heat, precision of seasoning, and understanding of the ingredients' characteristics can all be reflected in egg fried rice."
"If the fundamentals aren't solid, the final taste will be very ordinary. That's the reason for not passing, not because you made egg fried rice."
"You have a good point, I was being narrow-minded. My name is Sonoka Kikuchi, currently a first-year student in Tōtsuki's high school division. It's a pleasure to meet you in the future."
Looking at the boy's serious eyes, and thinking about it carefully, what he said was indeed correct.
So Sonoka Kikuchi extended her hand to him, not forgetting to introduce herself.
"My name is Okabe, a new student who just enrolled at Tōtsuki this year. Please take care of me for the next few years."
You don't hit a smiling face.
Although Sonoka Kikuchi's words just now were a bit offensive, she was able to admit her mistake.
Therefore, Okabe's impression of her wasn't bad, and it wasn't because of the swaying in front of him.
A first-year high school student is this well-developed?
No wonder Taki Kakizaki looked at Sonoka Kikuchi so unfavorably.
With a flat figure, looking at a perfectly developed woman, it's inevitable to feel a bit strange.
"There should be a welcome party later. I'll come call you then."
Sonoka Kikuchi didn't notice Okabe's wandering gaze.
Feeling the warmth from the boy's hand, she also felt a little shy; after all, he was very handsome.
A girl in her adolescence can't help but feel shy when seeing a handsome boy, especially a man like Okabe who developed early and was tall and strong.
Of course.
As the elder, Sonoka Kikuchi couldn't show this emotion too obviously.
"I understand, see you later."
Not noticing Sonoka Kikuchi's emotions, Okabe gave her a slight nod.
After saying this, he led Momo Akanegakubo into the room and closed the door.
"Click."
The sound of the door closing was heard.
Sonoka Kikuchi quietly let out a sigh of relief.
Thinking of the girl who had been with Okabe just now, her identity came to mind.
"That girl looks a bit familiar. She seems to be that famous dessert genius from the junior high division. How did she end up with a newly enrolled freshman?"
But what puzzled her most now was how these two seemed so intimate.
They must be childhood friends who grew up together.
What a good relationship.
For upperclassmen to know underclassmen, besides cooking duels and club activities, another way is to have known each other since childhood.
Because most of Tōtsuki's students come from culinary families, it's not uncommon for them to know each other.
"Oh well, I'll ask later."
Thinking on her own wouldn't yield any results, but her curiosity was too strong.
Sonoka Kikuchi closed her door and went downstairs, ready to see the other new student's cooking.
.
"Compared to the outside, this room is quite nice."
Okabe sat on the single bed with a comfortable expression, a hint of emotion in his voice.
The room was very spacious, much better than he had imagined.
A desk, a wardrobe, and a single bed were all provided, and there was also a completely independent small balcony outside.
"Indeed, it's a good sunny room."
Momo Akanegakubo silently sat down next to him, a subtle expression on her face as she watched the boy lie down.
Okabe's fried rice just now had shocked her.
In just three years, he had reached such a level.
Desserts were likely still his weak point.
Silence fell between them.
The atmosphere in the room was a bit quiet for a moment.
"Momo, you should move in too. If we live together, we can look out for each other and also verify our cooking with each other. Applying to the school shouldn't be too difficult."
Looking at the chandelier on the ceiling, Okabe was silent for a moment before suddenly speaking.
"Move in…"
"Yes, or do you have good friends in your original dorm?"
Momo Akanegakubo didn't agree immediately but was thinking.
Okabe seemed to think of something and asked.
"I have three friends there."
"I see, then there's nothing to be done."
Hearing Okabe's words, Momo Akanegakubo shook her head, her hand holding the doll tightening slightly: "I want to come over and research cooking together. They will understand me."
"Then move over. There are plenty of empty rooms in Polaris Dormitory anyway. I'll just tell Auntie Fumio."
Okabe turned his head.
Through her serious eyes, he could clearly feel her determination.
She probably also wanted to find a cooking-focused place to concentrate on her research.
"Mm."
Getting an answer, the corners of Momo Akanegakubo's mouth lifted slightly, forming an almost invisible arc.
"But it's a bit late today. I'll take you home first. You can move your things over tomorrow after you pass the skill trial."
He glanced at the sky outside.
It would take half an hour to get to Momo Akanegakubo's house from here, and an hour for a round trip.
To make it back for dinner, Okabe decided to take her home now.
He had just moved in today; it wasn't the best time to have guests.
"Okay, thank you for your trouble."
Although she wanted to say she could go back by herself, looking at the gloomy night outside, Momo Akanegakubo shrank her neck in fear and then nodded decisively.
"It's no problem. We haven't seen each other in a long time. On the way, you can tell me about your life at Tōtsuki these past few years. We were talking about me the whole time, weren't we?"
Getting up from the bed, Okabe smiled and looked at Momo Akanegakubo.
"Mm."
Momo Akanegakubo tightened her grip on Bucchi and stood up as well.
.
.
They chatted all the way.
After taking Momo Akanegakubo home, Okabe walked back to Polaris Dormitory alone.
"Speaking of which, it's been a long time since I've been on my own."
The cool summer evening breeze blew against his body, bringing a look of enjoyment to Okabe's face.
He then spread his arms and started jogging on the wide, empty road.
Thinking of the status panel he hadn't checked in a long time, Okabe decided to take a look.
After all, having arrived in a new environment, he needed to record it a bit.
[View proficiency panel?]

Since developing internal energy on the day Alice Nakiri left, Okabe's strength had increased at an astonishing rate, doubling in just three short years.
However, so far, he still hadn't gotten the hang of cultivating internal energy.
Three years of accumulation still hadn't pushed the number on the status panel past ten; it was growing at a snail's pace.
"I haven't looked in a long time. I didn't expect my strength to have broken a hundred. Even in a direct confrontation with a brown bear, I probably wouldn't be at a disadvantage now."
Looking at the freshly updated proficiency panel, Okabe couldn't help but feel emotional.
To have such formidable strength at the age of twelve, you probably couldn't find a second person like him in the world.
Moreover, besides his impressive strength, his cooking skills were also among the best for his age.
It wouldn't be an exaggeration to call him a peerless talent, a dragon among men.
Thinking of this, the corners of Okabe's mouth couldn't help but lift slightly.
Clearly, he was very satisfied with his achievements.
"But it's precisely at times like this that I need to calm down. Excessive pride only leads to downfall, indulging in a fabricated sense of power. Until I become a Special-Grade Chef, I am but a pawn."
After satisfaction comes reflection.
As a rational adult, he naturally wouldn't act like a child, thinking he was so talented that he no longer needed to work hard, leading to a tragic end like Zhong Yong.
"Liu Mao Xing became a Special-Grade Chef at 13. I still have 11 months until my 13th birthday."
The Guangzhou Special-Grade Chef examination is expected to be held next autumn.
If I fail, I'll have to wait another four years, so this battle can only be won, not lost.
The stars were sparse, and the moon was bright.
Looking at the half-moon in the sky, Okabe's expression was exceptionally firm.
Become a Special-Grade Chef.
This was his only goal at present.
For this, in the coming year, he would challenge others as much as possible at Tōtsuki, to quickly transform the fundamental skills he had trained for three years into real strength.
"Ah!"
His chest surging with emotion, Okabe shouted at the nearby cliff, completely venting his feelings.
He then started running wildly along the mountain road.
A cathartic release.
Only then did Okabe slowly stop, without a single bead of sweat on his face.
He then looked at Polaris Dormitory, which was emitting a rich aroma in front of him.
"I'm back!"
"Welcome back, we were just waiting for you for dinner."
Wearing an apron and standing at the door, Hisako Arato spoke with a smile, holding a spatula.
While completing their skill trials, Erina Nakiri and Hisako Arato had joined forces to prepare dinner, just waiting for Okabe to return so they could eat.
"It smells so good! What are we having today?
Wait, why are there so many strangers in the dorm? I didn't go to the wrong one, did I?"
A slightly excited voice sounded from behind Okabe, and then a figure in a school uniform squeezed in from outside.
The girl had small canine teeth, and long, wine-red hair draped over her shoulders, looking very energetic.
"Idiot, these are the new junior and senior students who've just moved in."
Taki Kakizaki heard the commotion and walked out of her room.
Looking at the lavish feast on the table, her face also showed a look of joy.
"New students? Including this handsome little guy? Welcome, welcome, please take care of me from now on! By the way, my name is Rindo Kobayashi, you can call me Big Sis Rindo from now on."
The girl with wine-red hair looked at Okabe, grabbed his hands, and shook them vigorously.
As she spoke, she revealed a brilliant smile.
