Robin nodded, a rare sign of acknowledgment from the young hero.
"It won't happen again," he said, his voice holding a firm resolve that promised countless hours of training for Pawniard.
Valeria offered him a small, knowing smile in return. She understood the fire in his words, the unwavering dedication to improvement. Orion Oak stepped forward, his expression warm and encouraging.
"That was an exemplary display of strategy and sportsmanship," Orion said, his voice resonating with genuine appreciation. "Both trainers showed immense skill."
He then turned to the next pair, his voice brimming with anticipation for the coming match.
"And now, for our next quarter-final battle, we have Raven against Franklin Richards!"
Franklin, ever the bundle of eager energy, bounced onto the arena floor with Ralts at his side. He flashed a friendly, though a little nervous, grin toward Raven.
"Hey, Raven! Good luck," Franklin called out. "But Ralts and I have been training a lot, so prepare to be amazed!"
Raven, in stark contrast, glided onto her side of the field. Her dark cloak billowed around her as Misdreavus floated silently beside her. Her expression remained perfectly unamused, her arms crossed in a subtle gesture that spoke volumes.
"Amazement is a relative term, Franklin," Raven replied, her voice flat and dry. "And quite often, a precursor to disappointment."
A small, knowing smirk played on her lips.
The arena floor rumbled, a deep sound that vibrated through the very soles of everyone's feet. Panels retracted with a hiss, giving way to a rushing torrent of water. The entire battleground transformed into a vast, shimmering lake, reflecting the overhead lights in fractured gleams.
Small, circular platforms, glowing faintly, rose from the depths, dotting the watery expanse like lily pads made of solidified light. The air grew cool and heavy, carrying the subtle scent of chlorine and fresh water. Franklin's cheerful grin faltered, his eyes widening in concern. He knew Ralts, a land-based Pokémon, would struggle immensely in this environment. The platforms offered limited maneuverability, and the water was a clear obstacle. Raven, on the other hand, remained perfectly still, her stoic demeanor unchanging. She knew Misdreavus's innate ability to float would turn this watery stage into a natural advantage.
Orion signaled the battle's start.
"Go, Ralts!" Franklin called out, a note of resignation in his voice.
He released Ralts from its Premier Ball. The small Psychic/Fairy-type Pokémon appeared on one of the glowing platforms. Its white body, usually vibrant, looked fragile and out of place against the shimmering water. Ralts trembled slightly, its red horns glowing a soft, anxious pulse as it sensed the unfamiliar and challenging environment beneath its feet. It took a tentative step, wobbling slightly on the unsteady footing.
Raven's movement was fluid and economical.
"Misdreavus," she stated, a subtle command in her calm voice.
Misdreavus emerged from its Poké Ball, its ethereal form hovering effortlessly above the water. Its large red eyes glowed with an almost playful, mischievous intent, perfectly at home in the eerie, damp setting. It drifted gently, a faint mist trailing behind it, a ghost made for this aquatic stage.
"Growl!" Franklin called out.
Ralts let out a soft cry, a sound that seemed small against the expanse of the water. Its red horns pulsed with a faint, uncertain light. The sound, while meant to be intimidating, seemed to lose its power over the water.
Misdreavus remained perfectly still, its ghostly form hovering. Misdreavus countered with Astonish.
WHOOSH
A quick, almost invisible dart. Ralts flinched, its small body quivering on the platform. The surprise rattled its concentration. Raven maintained her stoic demeanor.
"Confuse Ray."
A flickering beam of ghostly light shot from Misdreavus. It struck Ralts, wrapping around the Pokémon in a dizzying spiral of color. Ralts wobbled on its platform, disoriented by the effect. The red glow from its horns became erratic, pulsing unevenly. The arena, designed for versatility, felt like a deliberate trap for Franklin's partner.
"Ralts, use Confusion!" Franklin urged, his voice tight with concern.
He tried to break through the confusion, but Ralts struggled. A weak psychic pulse left Ralts, a faint shimmer of energy that missed Misdreavus completely. The attack dissolved into the water, causing only a ripple. Raven pressed her advantage, her voice a low murmur.
"Growl."
Misdreavus let out an eerie, almost silent shriek. The sound washed over Ralts, further lowering its attack power. Franklin, desperate to regain control, changed tactics.
"Double Team!"
Ralts shimmered, creating illusory copies. Its movements, however, were hampered by the small, unsteady platform and its confused state. The copies appeared hazy, less convincing, flickering in and out of existence. They did little to obscure the real Ralts. The situation felt increasingly out of Franklin's control.
Misdreavus, easily discerning the real Ralts among the imperfect illusions, flew closer. Raven, seeing her opportunity, commanded Misdreavus to use Mean Look. Misdreavus fixed Ralts with an unblinking, haunting stare. Ralts, already confused and trapped on its small platform, felt an invisible force preventing it from moving or escaping. The psychic barrier was too strong.
Mean Look was a devastating move in this situation, preventing Ralts from using Teleport to reposition or escape, effectively trapping it for Misdreavus's final attack. Ralts could not move from its platform. The confusion made it unable to focus its psychic powers to break free.
With Ralts trapped and confused, Raven delivered the final command.
"Misdreavus, Confusion!"
Misdreavus's red eyes flared, and a powerful psychic blast erupted, striking Ralts directly. Ralts cried out, its small body jolting before it slumped onto the platform, unable to battle. Orion raised his hand, his voice calm as he declared Raven and Misdreavus the winners.
Franklin rushed to Ralts, scooping it up with a sigh, cradling his small Pokémon.
"You did great, little guy," Franklin murmured, stroking Ralts's head. "Really great."
Raven simply nodded, a faint, almost imperceptible smile touching her lips. Misdreavus floated beside her, its red eyes still glowing with a hint of satisfaction. The spectral Pokémon let out a soft, almost melodic hum. The crowd cheered, a mix of awe and relief filling the arena. Even Damian gave a curt, approving nod in Raven's direction.
