Chapter 9 - a way out

Renji

I yelled out loud,

"LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! GO!"

Then boom me and the cat took off, side-by-side, like we was tag-teamin' this nightmare.

The cat sprinted ahead, tail flickin' like a whip, and we both rushed the damn samurai.

Nami

She was just starin' eyes wide, body frozen like,

"Yo, what the hell is even happening?"

Couldn't move, couldn't talk, just watchin' us throw hands with a ghost like we lost our minds.

We hit him together me swingin' the broken mop stick, cat slashin' with those claws but that samurai?

Nah.

Dude was BUILT different.

Fast. Clean. Too damn good.

He blocked every hit like he already knew the combo before we pressed the buttons.

I jumped back, caught my breath, side-eyed the cat.

We both stared at each other.

It meowed.

I nodded.

Team sync achieved.

The cat bolted forward first, low to the ground, silent like a shadow.

I ran right behind it.

At the last second, the cat crouched

I used his back like a ramp and launched myself in the air.

He went for the legs, I came down from above.

WHAM!

My stick smashed against his shoulder; it cracked in half.

The cat clamped his ankle, yanked him off balance.

Samurai stumbled, rolled, crashed hard.

His katana flew across the maze floor, clattering against the wall.

He stood up, mask cracked, eyes glowing all red and hungry.

Nami

Still half-dazed, but she pushed herself up slow.

Her knees wobbly, hands bleeding.

She finally stood, breathing hard, watching us finish the fight.

Cairo

Woke up somewhere deep in the maze.

"Yo! Guys! Where you at?!"

His voice echoed through the halls before he tripped and bam fell right through the maze floor.

Next thing we knew, man was runnin' toward us like he just respawned.

I didn't even notice him 'til the last second.

Me and the cat were charging.

Nami was sprintin' in from behind.

Then that sound again

"MEEEOOOW!"

The air twisted.

The ground shook.

Before we could even blink

the samurai was GONE.

The cat had swallowed him whole.

Like, straight up Gulp. No burp.

All that was left behind was the katana, just sittin' there on the floor.

Then everything glitched for a sec

the maze melted,

the walls folded,

and we were back in the regular school hallway.

Cairo

Came runnin' in, clueless. "Yo! What happened?!"

We just stared at the cat.

Even Nami was lost for words.

She took a swing outta habit, I guess

but the samurai was gone.

And just like that

her leg connected with Cairo's nuts.

He dropped, eyes wide, gaspin' for air like he'd been shot.

"DAMN, girl! You kick like a MAN!"

Then he hit the floor, rollin'.

Nami covered her mouth,

"I'm uh sorry?"

The rain outside had stopped.

The school was quiet again, too quiet.

We walked out together under the streetlights,

soaked, tired, bruised,

but alive.

Nami

When she got home, her sister opened the door before she could knock.

"Where have you BEEN?! I've been worried sick!"

Nami didn't answer.

Just walked past, straight to her room, and locked the door.

Cairo

His parents looked up from the couch,

then looked right back down, pretendin' not to see the mess he was.

He sighed, walked past, shut his door too.

Renji

Me?

Ain't nobody waitin' for me at home.

I just walked back with my new roommate

the damn cat.

Yeah.

The same demon cat that ate a samurai like a snack.

And guess what?

I kept the samurai's katana.

'Cause if weird things like this keep happenin'

I ain't goin' down unarmed.
