Chapter 135 - Chapter 135: Breakpoint

As the battle went on the rotating rings beneath the battlefield accelerated by a fraction. Not enough to throw everything into chaos, but enough to force faster decisions. The Harmonic Wells overhead flickered with deeper color now, their glow reflecting across the polished metal channels that threaded the floor.

Cyrus watched the rotations instead of the Pokémon for a moment.

The system was tightening, the rings slowly getting closer.

Justin Lawyer stood calmly near the central axis, eyes moving across the challengers like a conductor listening to an orchestra beginning to find rhythm.

He had seen this scene before, and heard this rhythm before, and a collapse would be brutal in a shared system like this.

"I believe the next rotation in three seconds, things seem to be getting tighter" Cyrus said, not loudly, but the others heard him now.

They were listening, which helped to changed the battle in their favor.

The rings shifted again...Target priority flipped across the arena, forcing pressure towards... Magnezone again.

The floating steel Pokémon reacted immediately, electromagnetic rings flaring around its body like a miniature storm system spinning in place.

Before anyone else could strike, Magnezone released a field-wide pulse.

The air snapped with magnetic tension, dragging metal fragments from the floor channels and whipping them through the air in controlled arcs. The attack grazed Luxray, clipped Togekiss's wing, and rattled Krookodile's stance as metal shards skidded across the platform.

Cyrus exhaled slowly, "try not to face them head-on, double up if possible on one target." he said.

Ceruledge understood Cyrus's instructions immediately, blue fire flowed along its blades like liquid flame as it moved, not charging Magnezone directly, but forcing it to reposition relative to Claydol and Gallade.

That was the trick of this gym.

If you attacked one defender without thinking about the others, the rotation punished you.

Luxray moved next.

Instead of lunging forward aggressively again, it circled wide, electricity crackling low around its paws like static crawling across stone.

The reckless trainer had actually learned something from earlier.

Togekiss lifted higher into the air, wings glowing softly as it built energy without releasing it yet.

Cyrus noticed that too.

They were starting to fight like a system.

Justin watched with visible interest now.

"Better," he said.

Then Claydol attacked.

The ancient Pokémon rotated faster, runic patterns along its body igniting in a pale amber glow. The arena floor responded as if connected to it, channels beneath the battlefield lighting up in branching paths that surged outward like spreading roots.

Then the ground rose.

Sections of the battlefield tilted upward in angled planes, turning stable ground into shifting surfaces that disrupted balance and line-of-sight.

Krookodile nearly slipped.

Luxray skidded sideways.

Togekiss lost clean targeting for a moment as the angle of the plateform changed.

Cyrus felt it this wasn't random terrain manipulation.

Claydol was altering the geometry of coordination.

"Don't over correct your positioning" Cyrus said. "Let the platforms settle."

Ceruledge lowered its stance instead of charging forward.

The field adjusted, then the tilting slowed and after that... stability returned.

"Now!" Cyrus yelled.

The challengers moved together.

Krookodile slammed forward first, claws tearing into the angled platform as it launched upward toward Claydol. Stone fragments exploded from its attack as jagged spires of rock erupted beneath the floating defender.

Togekiss released the energy it had been holding, a radiant sphere that cut through the arena like a streak of sunrise, forcing Claydol to shift its rotation to avoid direct impact.

That was the opening.

Ceruledge struck from below.

Its blades ignited brighter than before, spectral fire trailing behind each movement like ribbons of burning air. It didn't aim for Claydol's body.

It cut through the energy channels stabilizing its rotation.

The strike landed with a ringing crack.

Claydol wobbled in midair.

The defenders' amber Harmonic Well dropped again.

Justin nodded once in approval, the challengers had started anticipating and helping each other.

But the gym still had control of the battlefield.

The rotational rings accelerated again, faster now, with the shifts happening mid-movement.

Gallade exploited it instantly.

The elegant fighter stepped through a rotating prism of light and appeared behind Luxray in a flash of motion so precise it looked like the battlefield had folded around it.

Its blade arm flashed.

A clean strike landed.

Luxray staggered.

The golden Harmonic Well dipped sharply this time.

A warning ripple ran through the column.

The reckless trainer swore under his breath again, but this time he didn't lash out blindly.

Instead, he repositioned Luxray toward Cyrus's quadrant.

Trusting the formation.

Cyrus noticed the change and adjusted Ceruledge's position to cover the gap Gallade had opened.

Heliolisk moved next.

The gym leader's ace had been watching the entire exchange, darting between quadrants with deceptive calm.

Now its frill flared wide.

Light from the suspended prisms above refracted through the membrane of its neck like sunlight breaking through crystal.

Energy gathered.

Heliolisk slammed its forelimbs into the platform and released a wave of blinding electrical light that raced outward across the arena floor.

It struck all four challengers' Pokémon at once.

The golden Harmonic Well dropped dangerously close to the defenders' level.

The arena lights dimmed slightly.

Justin had just reminded them that the gym still controlled the pace of damage.

Cyrus narrowed his eyes.

"Don't chase them," he said quietly.

The others looked toward him instinctively.

"Let the rotation force their exposure."

For a brief second, the battle paused in that strange, moving equilibrium where both sides waited for the system to shift again.

Then the Harmonic Field responded.

The golden lines ignited once more.

SPOTLIGHT WINDOW: SOUTH QUADRANT

Krookodile's section.

The battlefield dampened instantly.

Ceruledge froze mid-step.

Luxray's electricity dimmed.

Togekiss hovered in suspended stillness.

Only Krookodile and Claydol remained active.

The newer trainer blinked once.

Then straightened.

This was his moment.

Claydol rotated slowly, ancient eyes glowing brighter as the dampened arena narrowed around them.

Krookodile growled low, muscles tightening.

The trainer hesitated, then he remembered Cyrus's earlier words.

Short bursts.

"Controlled strike," Cyrus said from across the arena.

The trainer nodded.

Krookodile lunged forward, not with its earlier explosive force, but with measured timing. Its claws struck the platform, launching it upward in a sharp arc that forced Claydol to rotate defensively.

Claydol countered with a psychic wave meant to destabilize Krookodile mid-air.

But the attack came half a beat too late.

Krookodile twisted, teeth slamming into Claydol's outer ring with a precise Crunch that disrupted its balance.

The amber Harmonic Well flickered.

Not a massive drop, but exactly the kind of exchange this gym rewarded.

When the Spotlight faded, the field roared back into motion again.

And for the first time, the challengers had momentum.

Togekiss surged upward, wings glowing brilliantly as it created a spiral of wind that redirected Magnezone's magnetic field away from the others.

Luxray struck next, lightning crashing down in a controlled arc that clipped Gallade without feeding extra energy into Magnezone's absorption field.

Ceruledge moved through the center like a blue comet, flames carving lines of heat across the shifting battlefield geometry.

The amber Harmonic Well dropped again.

Now clearly below the challengers'.

Justin's expression changed slightly.

Not concern but interest this team was doing better then he expected.... and honestly he hadn't expected much.

"Very good," he said.

Then he tapped the control node embedded near the central axis.

The rotating rings beneath the battlefield sped up again.

But this time... something else activated.

The Harmonic Wells themselves began to fluctuate, they looked as if they were wobbling.

The golden column above the challengers flickered as the battlefield's channels redirected flow across quadrants unpredictably.

Redistribution phase.

The gym had entered its second stage.

Now positioning mattered even more.

"Careful," Cyrus said.

"If we misalign now, the system will punish all of us."

Heliolisk darted forward again, faster than before, using the shifting energy currents like currents in water.

Claydol stabilized itself higher above the battlefield.

Magnezone repositioned to overlap two rotation paths at once.

Gallade stepped forward with renewed calm, blade angled slightly downward like a duelist preparing for the decisive exchange.

Justin's voice carried across the arena once more, "Most teams fall apart here."

The Harmonic Field pulsed.

The energy columns brighten.

The gym leader didn't seem to be trying to defeat them outright.

He was pushing them to the breaking point of coordination.

Cyrus glanced once at the other challengers.

Then back at the battlefield.

"Alright," Cyrus said, "This is where we win it."
