"Again," Marcus said, pacing in front of me like a drill sergeant. "The prosecutor asks: 'Ms. Hartley, isn't it true you were infatuated with Mr. Cross despite knowing he was a killer?' What do you say?"
I took a breath, centering myself. "I knew Dante had killed people while working for the Arrow Society. But I also knew he'd stolen their ledger to expose them. He was trying to do the right thing, trying to atone. That's not infatuation—that's seeing someone for who they're trying to become, not just who they were."
"Better." Marcus nodded. "But lose the 'trying to become' part. It sounds uncertain. Say 'who they are.' Confidence. Always confidence."
"Who they are," I repeated.
"Good. Next question: 'You claim Sarah Mitchell was going to kill Mr. Cross. But you fired before she did. How can you be certain of her intent?'"
