Day Two of Trial
I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Isabella's face. That cold smile. Those calculating eyes.
She was going to destroy us today. I knew it.
"You look terrible," Bianca said at breakfast, pushing coffee toward me.
"Thanks. You really know how to boost morale."
"I'm serious. You need to eat something. Isabella's going to try to rattle you. Don't give her the satisfaction of seeing you weak."
"She doesn't have to try. She's already won." I stared at my untouched toast. "The jury's going to believe her. She was married to Dante. She knows everything about him, about us. She'll twist it all."
"Then we untwist it." Dante appeared, already dressed in his court suit. "Marcus will cross-examine her. Expose her lies."
"Will he?" I looked up at him. "She's smart, Dante. She's been planning this. What if—"
"No what-ifs." He pulled me up, hands on my shoulders. "We knew this was coming. We prepared for it. Now we face it. Together."
