Chapter 522 - Chapter 522

Juventus had little choice but to take the initiative.

They were already two goals behind on aggregate and playing away from home, so sitting back and waiting would only bring them closer to elimination.

Even with more possession, however, they struggled to establish control through midfield.

"Juventus have to attack," Jim Beglin explained. "The problem is getting the ball from midfield into dangerous areas. Kanté, McTominay, and Bruno Fernandes are covering a tremendous amount of ground, and whenever Juventus try to play forward, United quickly close around the receiver."

Cristiano drifted toward the left touchline in search of space away from Thiago Silva and Maguire.

Pogba spotted the movement and played the ball out to him, but before Cristiano could build any momentum, Wan-Bissaka stepped in with a perfectly timed tackle and knocked the ball out for a throw.

The Old Trafford crowd applauded as the pitchside clock moved toward twenty minutes.

The score remained 0–0, which suited Mourinho perfectly.

Every minute that passed without a Juventus goal made their task more difficult, and United had no need to turn the match into an end-to-end contest.

They wanted to disrupt Juventus's rhythm, force them into physical battles, and make them work for every yard they gained.

Cristiano stood with his hands on his hips as he caught his breath, glancing briefly toward Wan-Bissaka.

During his own Manchester United years, he had been the winger full-backs dreaded facing in isolation.

His acceleration had once been explosive enough to turn a single touch into several yards of separation, but his game had gradually evolved.

The dazzling winger had become an elite penalty-box scorer, a transformation that prolonged his career while inevitably reducing some of the raw speed that once made him so devastating in one-on-one situations.

Wan-Bissaka understood that perfectly well, but he was not about to underestimate him.

He had once wondered what it would be like to mark players such as Messi or Cristiano in an important European match.

Now he was doing exactly that, and the only thought in his mind was to remain focused.

Cristiano might no longer possess the same acceleration, but one mistake could still be enough.

...

Sarri's expression grew darker with each passing minute. If the match continued at this pace, Juventus might not even lose on the night; they would simply drift quietly out of the competition.

And elimination might cost him his job.

His previous spell at Chelsea had ended after a difficult season filled with tension and growing doubts from the club's hierarchy.

Now Manchester United and Ling threatened to play a part in ending another chapter of his career.

With no breakthrough coming from the original plan, Sarri gestured toward Pogba and gave his players greater freedom to improvise.

Only a week separated the two legs, and Mourinho had changed both formation and approach.

There had simply not been enough time to construct an entirely new system capable of solving every problem United presented.

At some point, Sarri could only trust his most talented players to create something for themselves.

Across the technical area, Mourinho watched Juventus for another minute before turning toward Faria.

"Rui, tell them to increase the pressure."

Faria looked at him. "Now?"

"Yes. I think we're close to getting something."

United had prepared for the match with a defensive counterattacking approach, but Mourinho never intended to keep exactly the same tempo for ninety minutes.

A sudden increase in pressure could be more disruptive than constant pressing because Juventus would have little time to adjust.

At the next stoppage, Faria called Bruno Fernandes toward the touchline and passed on the instruction.

United immediately began stepping higher.

...

McTominay soon found himself involved in another increasingly physical duel with Pogba.

He leaned into his former teammate, clipped his stride during a challenge, and eventually sent the Frenchman to the ground.

Pogba sprang back up and shoved him in the chest.

"Are you fucking playing football or not?"

McTominay took a step backward.

For a moment, he seemed reluctant to start an argument with someone who had once shared the same dressing room.

Wan-Bissaka had no such hesitation.

He rushed over and pushed Pogba away.

"Watch your mouth. If you can't handle a bit of contact, go play tennis."

Players from both sides quickly gathered around them, forcing the referee to intervene before the confrontation grew any worse.

Ling and Cristiano came forward as captains while the referee delivered a stern warning.

"I explained my standard before kickoff. Control your players. If this happens again, I'll start showing cards."

Neither captain argued.

McTominay's original challenge had been physical but hardly outrageous by Premier League standards, while Pogba's retaliatory shove had been the more obvious disciplinary offense.

The referee nevertheless chose to calm the situation instead of escalating it, and play resumed without a booking.

...

In the 26th minute, Bentancur exchanged passes with Cuadrado and escaped Matić's pressure before nudging the ball outside Sandro and continuing toward the right flank.

"Very good from Bentancur," Beglin said. "Quick feet in a tight area, and he's carried the ball through two challenges."

The Uruguayan had developed a reputation among Juventus supporters for constantly directing teammates with his hands and voice, almost like a traffic officer organizing movement around him.

His willingness to take responsibility was useful, although his passing could sometimes be overly cautious.

There had been occasions when Cristiano made the perfect forward run only for Bentancur to choose the safer sideways option.

This time, he was more decisive.

Bentancur reached the byline and curled a cross toward the far post, where Cristiano was already attacking the space.

Maguire tried to cut it out but could not get there in time.

Thiago Silva could.

The Brazilian had read Cristiano's movement before the cross was even delivered and moved across to intercept cleanly.

"Excellent anticipation from Thiago Silva," Drury said. "He reads Ronaldo's run early and prevents the cross from ever reaching him."

Thiago did not pause after winning the ball. He immediately sent a diagonal pass toward Kanté, who moved it on to McTominay as United broke forward.

Their transition was rapid without becoming chaotic.

Maguire, who had just recovered from his attempted interception, pushed up behind the play to restore the defensive line while the midfielders and forwards surged into space.

Three quick passes later, Mahrez received the ball.

Pogba stepped toward him, but Mahrez rolled it delicately with his left foot and slipped away from the challenge before threading his next pass directly through Pogba's legs.

The ball reached Ling with Bonucci pressing tightly into his back. Rather than attempting to turn, Ling protected possession and laid it off to Bruno.

Juventus's midfield immediately collapsed toward the center, creating space elsewhere.

Bruno saw Sandro advancing down the left and switched the ball toward him.

Juventus scrambled across to close the Brazilian, but their movement merely opened another gap at the edge of the penalty area.

Sandro played the return pass first time.

Ling was waiting.

He had enough space to take one touch onto his right foot and set himself.

Then he shot.

The strike came with very little backlift but carried tremendous power, travelling through the crowded area before Szczęsny had time to set himself properly.

The goalkeeper began his dive, but the ball had already beaten him and crashed into the net!

1–0.

Manchester United led 3–0 on aggregate!

Old Trafford erupted.

"What a strike from Ling!" Drury shouted. "Eighteen Champions League goals this season, and Cristiano Ronaldo's single-season record of seventeen has finally been surpassed."

Beglin watched the replay. "The lack of backlift is what makes it so difficult. Ling sets the ball with one touch and generates all the power through his hip rotation. Szczęsny sees it late because of the bodies in front of him, but even with a clearer view, that would have been extremely difficult to stop."

The significance of the goal was impossible to ignore.

Ling had entered the evening level with Cristiano's record and broken it before halftime.

There was still more than an hour of football left in the semifinal, and potentially another Champions League final after that.

For the moment, though, the only number that mattered to United was the aggregate score.

Three goals ahead.

Juventus now needed three just to force extra time.

...

The supporters broke into a song built around Ling's name as he ran toward the corner and dropped into a knee-slide before getting back to his feet and punching the air.

There was something uniquely satisfying about a shot struck that cleanly.

No deflection, no rebound, no goalkeeper error—just perfect contact followed by the net moving behind him.

His teammates quickly surrounded him, with Sandro pushing his way into the group.

"How was my run?"

Ling laughed. "Perfect."

The Brazilian was understandably eager to claim some credit.

His advance down the left had forced Danilo into a difficult decision, and De Ligt had been pulled away from the middle to cover.

Mahrez's movement then occupied Bonucci, which left the space at the top of the area open for Ling.

Ling gave Sandro a thumbs-up. "Beautiful."

That was enough to leave the full-back looking extremely pleased with himself.

...

The reaction from Juventus was very different.

For the first time, the tie genuinely seemed beyond them.

They had arrived at Old Trafford believing that the dominant team in Italian football could still challenge the reigning European champions, but United's ability to change tempo, combine physical pressure with fast transitions, and punish defensive mistakes had exposed the difficulty of the task.

Cristiano did not waste time with another speech.

He walked into the goal, picked up the ball, carried it back to the center circle, and placed it down for the restart.

There was nothing useful he could say.

They simply had to keep playing!
