Chapter 18: Stillwell's Web

POV: Ben

The surveillance van smells of sweat and stale coffee as The Boys watch Stillwell's suburban house for the third consecutive night, Butcher's obsession with getting to Homelander through her growing more manic by the hour.

Westchester County domestic tranquility spreads around them like expensive camouflage designed to hide the fact that war crimes are being planned behind white picket fences and professional landscaping. Stillwell's house glows with warm lighting that suggests family dinners and bedtime stories instead of corporate strategies that turn children into weapons for profit margins.

"Three days of surveillance. Three days of watching Butcher's sanity deteriorate while he stares at the woman who controls the monster that destroyed his life."

Butcher's hands shake with barely controlled rage as he adjusts surveillance equipment that probably violates multiple federal statutes. His obsession with Homelander has focused into laser intensity on the executive who manages America's greatest hero like a particularly dangerous pet that needs careful handling.

"She knows everything," Butcher mutters with the particular certainty that comes from building entire worldviews around single points of hatred. "Every secret, every cover-up, every bloody thing Homelander's done. Get to her, we get to him."

Ben studies Stillwell's house through tactical assessment that extends beyond The Boys' emotional motivations. Her home office contains intelligence worth more than any single extraction—files on every active Supe, documentation of Compound V experiments, operational details that could reshape their understanding of Vought's true scope.

"Information warfare. They're planning interrogation and intimidation. I'm planning intelligence gathering that they don't need to know about."

"Her security is minimal," M.M. reports while monitoring communications frequencies that should be encrypted but apparently aren't. "Couple of guards, standard residential alarm system. She's relying on anonymity rather than protection."

Frenchie traces building schematics on tablet displays that glow with tactical possibility. "Home office on second floor, separate entrance through side patio. Could access independently while main team creates distraction."

"Perfect. Give me access to her files while they handle the interrogation. Doppelganger's shadow can mimic security personnel, creating infiltration opportunities they don't need to know about."

"I could handle intelligence gathering," Ben suggests with careful enthusiasm that disguises strategic manipulation. "While you focus on Stillwell directly, I access her computer systems. Maximize information extraction."

Butcher's assessment of Ben has evolved from suspicion to pragmatic appreciation over their joint operations. When he nods agreement, it carries the authority of someone who's learned to use available weapons regardless of their unsettling nature.

"Right then. Hughie and I take the front door, M.M. and Frenchie handle perimeter security. Ben gets us everything Stillwell's hiding in her bloody filing cabinets."

The plan proceeds with military precision that speaks of experience with operations that can't be officially sanctioned. Ben splits from the team during approach, using shadows to scout entry routes while The Boys position themselves for interrogation that will probably violate several Geneva Convention articles.

Stillwell's home office occupies the second floor's eastern wing, windows that frame suburban tranquility while containing enough classified information to restructure their understanding of Vought's criminal operations. Ben's Doppelganger shadow manifests wearing the face of perimeter security, shapeshifting abilities turning infiltration into administrative routine.

"Perfect cover. Security guard checking unusual readings, nothing suspicious about accessing the house during family's evening routine."

Ben bypasses alarm systems using Traffic King's metal manipulation to interfere with electronic locks, while Doppelganger's intelligence provides tactical assessment that previous shadows couldn't match. The combination of abilities creates infiltration capabilities that exceed what normal human planning could achieve.

"Synchronized shadow coordination. Metal manipulation plus shapeshifting plus tactical intelligence equals capabilities that approach superhuman efficiency."

Stillwell's computer system yields secrets that restructure Ben's understanding of Vought's true scope. Files on active Supes reveal enhancement programs that extend far beyond The Seven—hundreds of enhanced individuals scattered across military, law enforcement, and corporate positions where superpowers serve strategic objectives rather than public relations.

But deeper files reveal something that makes Ben's blood freeze in his veins.

Children. Hundreds of children.

"Red River Institute. Sage Grove Center. Dozens of facilities nationwide, all conducting Compound V experiments on juveniles who can't consent to becoming weapons."

The files paint pictures of systematic child abuse disguised as scientific research. Ben photographs everything while his extraction-hardened conscience recoils from documentation that proves Vought's evil extends far beyond corrupt heroes into industrial-scale child experimentation.

One file carries special classification markers: "M. Moreau - Hemokenetic - Extreme Potential/Extreme Risk." The attached photos show a teenage girl whose blood manipulation abilities have been enhanced to levels that approach tactical WMD status.

"Hemokenetic. Blood manipulation strong enough to require special containment protocols. If I could extract abilities like that..."

Ben downloads everything while coordinating with his shadows to maintain security perimeter. Through the house's communication system, he hears Butcher's interrogation growing more intense—threats and promises delivered with the particular authority that comes from people who've stopped caring about legal consequences.

His danger sense explodes without warning.

"Company. Multiple enhanced signatures moving fast toward the house. Security response or—"

Black Noir materializes in the office doorway like death wearing a costume, his silent presence more terrifying than any threat could be. Ben's danger sense screams warnings about Level 60+ threat assessment while his shadows respond with coordination that feels desperately inadequate.

"The Seven's enforcer. No time for extraction, no time for tactical assessment. Just survival."

The fight erupts across Stillwell's office with supernatural violence that transforms domestic tranquility into abstract art painted in property damage and mortal terror. Ben's shadows attack simultaneously—Popclaw's strength, Ezekiel's elasticity, Gill's water manipulation, Traffic King's metal control, Doppelganger's shapeshifting creating diversions while Ben flees through windows designed for suburban safety rather than tactical extraction.

Black Noir moves with lethal grace that makes enhanced abilities look clumsy by comparison. His first strike tears through Juice Box's shadow like tissue paper, the destruction causing Ben physical pain as the connection severs permanently.

"Gone. First shadow lost to enemy action. Juice Box's echo destroyed, his abilities severed from my collection. It hurts—actually hurts like losing pieces of my soul."

The pain of shadow destruction is more than tactical loss—it's psychological amputation that creates holes in Ben's enhanced consciousness where extracted abilities used to live. Juice Box's strength disappears from his arsenal while phantom pain echoes through synaptic pathways that suddenly connect to nothing.

Ben's remaining shadows coordinate desperate fighting retreat while Black Noir demonstrates why The Seven's enforcers are considered untouchable. Only Doppelganger's shapeshifting confusion and the distraction of The Boys' explosive escape gives Ben enough time to extract through suburban landscaping that wasn't designed to conceal superhuman combat.

[SEVERE EXTRACTION PENALTY: LOST ABILITIES CANNOT BE RECOVERED]

[PAIN THRESHOLD REACHED: SHADOW DESTRUCTION AFFECTS HOST CONSCIOUSNESS]

[MAJOR INTELLIGENCE GAINED: RED RIVER FILES, SAGE GROVE LOCATION]

[NEW QUEST UNLOCKED: RED RIVER'S SECRETS]

In their escape vehicle speeding through New Jersey back roads, The Boys celebrate survival while Ben stares at hands that still feel phantom strength that no longer exists. The loss of Juice Box's shadow creates hollow spaces in his consciousness where enhanced abilities used to provide tactical options.

"Learning curve. Losing shadows isn't just tactical setback—it's psychological amputation. Each extraction creates connection that destruction severs painfully."

"Good intelligence?" Butcher asks while driving with satisfaction that suggests successful interrogation despite tactical complications.

"Everything." Ben's voice carries exhaustion mixed with strategic satisfaction. "Facilities, experiments, trafficking routes. Enough to understand how deep Vought's operations really go."

But the intelligence comes with knowledge that restructures his understanding of what hunting Supes really means. Hundreds of children being experimented on, enhanced individuals being created and controlled from birth, systematic evil that extends far beyond individual criminal behavior into institutional child abuse disguised as scientific progress.

"This isn't just about corrupt heroes anymore. This is about dismantling an entire system that creates enhanced weapons by destroying enhanced children."

Ben closes his eyes and feels the absence where Juice Box's abilities used to live, phantom pain that reminds him that collecting shadows means risking pieces of his soul every time he manifests them in combat. The System's power comes with costs that extend beyond tactical considerations into territory that feels uncomfortably close to losing his humanity one extraction at a time.

The city breathes around them with the rhythm of eight million heartbeats while Ben learns the difference between growing stronger and becoming something that might not be worth preserving, wondering what he'll become when he's collected hundreds of death-echoes and lost dozens more to enemy action that treats his shadows like the weapons they've become.
