Uchiha Ninja School.
This section is a throwing lesson.
Uchiha Izumi called all the students to the playground.
Then each student was given three kunai.
After the division, Uchiha Izumi said:
"In order to judge everyone's current level of shurikenjutsu, we'll start with a basic test."
"Everyone will line up and throw at the standard target a hundred meters away."
"Mitsuki, as class leader, you'll handle the scoring."
Mitsuki Uchiha: "Yes, teacher!"
The students obediently lined up and threw one by one.
Although the distance was only a hundred meters,
they were still just academy-aged kids with little real experience.
So the results were… not very good.
Soon it was Uchiha Sasuke's turn.
Sasuke remained extremely confident.
After all, he had practiced throwing countless times with Itachi.
A hundred meters…
Scoring full points shouldn't be hard!
Sasuke picked up the kunai and was preparing to throw when Uchiha Izumi suddenly spoke.
"Sasuke and Shiro. At your level, throwing at a fixed target from a hundred meters won't teach you anything. So I prepared a separate test for the two of you."
Sasuke was pleased at first.
Being singled out meant he was special.
But
When he realized that he wasn't the only one being given special treatment,
his competitive spirit immediately flared!
He turned his head and stared at Bai, full of fighting intent.
Bai, however, didn't react at all.
Not only that when he noticed Sasuke staring, he even smiled politely.
"Hmph!"
Sasuke snorted and turned his head.
Soon, all the students except Sasuke and Bai had completed the test.
Uchiha Izumi glanced at the results and said seriously, "Your throwing standards are far too low. I'll have to drill you hard from now on."
The students lowered their heads in embarrassment.
Then Uchiha Izumi looked at Sasuke and Bai.
"Next is your special test."
Under the confused gazes of the entire class, Uchiha Izumi removed the target board and hung it directly on her own chest!
"The enemy won't stand still for you."
"Only those who can consistently strike a moving target can claim to truly understand throwing techniques."
"I will be moving freely around the playground. The two of you will compete to see who can hit the target on my chest first."
The whole class was stunned!!
This…
This wasn't the academy's usual moving-target drill at all!!
It was too extreme!!
Hitting the target was fine.
But if the kunai landed anywhere else…
It would be fatal!
After securing the target, Uchiha Izumi looked at the two boys.
"You may begin whenever you're ready."
Sasuke's hands trembled slightly.
He had hunted boars and rabbits before.
But this was the first time he'd aimed at a living person!!
If he slipped even a little
He could kill her!!
In contrast, Bai stepped forward calmly.
After all, he grew up fleeing alongside Zabuza, so his mental resilience far surpassed Sasuke's.
"Izumi-sensei, I'm ready."
Bai said.
He weighed the kunai in his hand.
He was used to lightweight senbon needles; kunai were heavier and bulkier.
But he could adapt.
Seeing Bai so calm, Sasuke gritted his teeth, forcefully stamping down his panic.
"I'm ready too!"
"Good," Izumi said.
"Then we begin."
Almost the moment she spoke
Whoosh!
Whoosh!
Whoosh!
Bai flicked his wrist, sending several kunai flying with clean precision.
Uchiha Izumi smiled slightly.
Her body blurred as she leapt away, moving lightly and gracefully like a swallow.
She slipped past every kunai with ease.
Seeing this, Bai immediately followed up with several more throws, but just like before, they all failed to land even close to the mark!
"Sure enough… ordinary straight-line throwing won't work at all against Izumi-sensei, who already has the fully matured Sharingan from the Uchiha clan."
Bai frowned slightly. He had fought hunters from Kirigakure and trained under Zabuza, but facing a Sharingan user someone who can read muscle tension and predict trajectories was a completely different challenge.
"Hmph… Then watch carefully. When it comes to throwing weapons, I won't lose to you."
Sasuke lifted his chin arrogantly and snapped his wrist, launching two kunai in rapid succession.
But strangely
Judging from the visible trajectory, neither of the kunai was heading toward the target plate tied to Uchiha Izumi's chest.
"What kind of ridiculous throw is that…?"
"Both kunai are going wide!" Uchiha Mitsuki muttered, rolling her eyes as if she couldn't bear to watch.
But in the next instant
Something unbelievable happened.
The two kunai intersected in mid-air at precisely calculated timing. One kunai struck the other's hilt, forcing the second kunai to ricochet off course and bend sharply toward the target on Izumi's chest!
A kunai that changes direction mid-flight?!
The watching students gasped with their mouths hanging open.
Sasuke, seeing everyone's shock, couldn't hide his pride.
This technique the Uchiha Flow: Curved Trajectory Kunai was something Itachi had demonstrated to him before. It allowed a thrown weapon to bypass cover or catch an opponent off guard by using collision-generated angle changes.
Even Uchiha Izumi was taken aback.
Of course she recognized the technique, it was a signature advanced Uchiha trick, something even fully trained genin struggled to learn.
But she never expected Sasuke, still only a first-year academy student, to already be capable of it.
The redirected kunai closed in rapidly on the center of the moving target
CLANG!!!
Another kunai struck it from the side, knocking Sasuke's weapon away at the very last moment.
"Hey!! What do you think you're doing?!"
Sasuke spun around, furious.
Bai lowered his arm calmly, his expression soft and serene, eyes bending like a crescent moon. "My apologies. But because that person is watching" His gaze drifted briefly toward Zabuza in the distance. "I can't afford to lose. And Izumi-sensei said that the winner is simply whoever strikes the target first. That means we're opponents. Stopping you from hitting the target is also part of the game's true meaning."
Uchiha Izumi nodded with approval. "Bai is correct. In real missions, you don't just aim for success you prevent your opponent's success as well."
"Damn it…"
Sasuke clenched his fists, teeth grinding in frustration.
His curved-trajectory kunai was meant as a surprise technique; if it fails once, the opponent becomes aware of it, making it far more difficult to use again especially when Izumi already has her Sharingan fully open, each tomoe spinning sharply as she reads every tiny movement.
…
A short distance away, two figures quietly watched.
Thousand Nights and Zabuza.
"It looks like I'm not the only madman teaching at this academy," Zabuza muttered with a low laugh after seeing Izumi hang a target directly over her heart and let children throw sharpened weapons at her.
"A madman?"
Chiya shook his head lightly. "She must've heard the condition set by old man Sarutobi. She doesn't want my efforts to go to waste, so she's pushing herself this far. Even if her own body is at risk, she's trying like a madman to make sure these kids improve."
Zabuza unexpectedly went quiet for a moment.
If only Kirigakure had teachers like that…
But after the Fourth Mizukage fell under the influence of illusion and reshaped the village into the bloody Mist, unity and compassion disappeared overnight, replaced only by fear and pointless slaughter.
"Hey," Chiya asked suddenly, "which of those two brats do you think will win in the end?"
Zabuza shot him a sidelong look.
You have the nerve to call them "brats"?
You yourself are barely older than they are!
