Chapter 1 - Prologue

Exhaustion was all she had felt. For years and years, she had been working a grueling labor intensive job, with minimal pay and barely any free time, as well as a massive pain in her chest ever since she had gotten out of her mandatory service. Memellia sighed softly, leaning back in her chair. It was already 11 at night, and barely anyone was awake. She lived alone in an apartment, not having a spouse or family, even though she was 31. She at least had some company with the people she would game with, loving her dark fantasy MMORPGs that she often played for the action and drama, but the more she played, and the older she got, she felt like there was more. She missed so many opportunities in her life, now stuck working a labor intensive 9-5. As she leaned back, she looked around at her room. Books, games, CDs, many different forms of entertainment, but no sight of accomplishments. No trophies, no hobbies, just entertainment. In the silence of her room, the only thing she felt was a sense of inadequacy. A whole life of nothing to offer. Memellia closed her eyes, wondering where it went wrong. She shook her head. there wasn't any use dwelling on her life now. After all, it was essentially too late for her to make any changes.

She grunted, pushing herself up out of her chair. her chest was pounding, her breathing rough and raspy. She put her left arm over her chest, only to feel her heart was pounding. Why? She didn't even exert herself enough to even feel this way. She grunted, walking slowly to her kitchen. She felt short of breath. She experienced this before, nothing new to her. She made her way over to the counter, only to immediately collapse to the floor and begin gasping for air. Why was she feeling so short of breath? it wasn't like she had lung cancer or anything of the sorts, she never did habits that would lead to it, so what was the deal?

Her golden blonde hair slowly fluttered down over her eyes as she was panting on the floor. She slowly regained her breath, pushing herself up enough to stay over her countertop. She grabbed a glass and slowly filled it with water from her sink. She had time to think now without the sharp breathing. She thought about how after her time in the military, she went back to civilian life and jobs, but with no education, she had no choice but to undertake hard labor jobs. Construction, mechanics, but no actual motivation to achieve something greater. It bummed her, but she wondered why she was thinking about all of this.

Why now? Why am I concerned about this now?

She shook her head and drank her water. No, for now, she would have to just ignore pursuing something greater. after all, she still had her whole life ahead of her, right?

After putting her glass down, she decided to go out for some fresh air. This time of night, the streets were usually empty, but due to the time of the year, many people were travelling back and forth inside the country. People going to see families, friends, all of the sorts. She had her brother...but they haven't exactly talked much after her time in the service. She stepped outside, leaning over the railing of her apartment's outside walkway. She took a couple deep breaths, staring up at the sky. She nodded, smiling at herself. Why was she worrying? It just took time to get to a steady pace in life.

She began walking downstairs, going out to see the busy street. Cars drove by, obviously trying to get to family before the night ended. She saw families, spouses, and even just regular people just zooming past. She turned and began walking down the street a little, deciding to take a trip into town while she was up and awake.

She walked, going past stores, restaurants, closed buildings, offices, watching her own reflection in the dark windows. She stopped and got a good look at herself and the area around her. But, just then, the pain in her chest came back way harder than before. She instantly grasped at her chest, gasping for air. Her knees buckled below her, falling to the floor. She heard strangers shouting as they noticed her fall.

"Woah, someone help that woman out!"

"Someone is falling! Call a fuckin ambulance!"

She wanted to reply, but she couldn't speak at all. the pain was intense, making her unable to breathe. As she turned over, her body fell limp and her vision began to fade.

Am I going to die here?

The first genuine time she actually questioned her condition, but there wasn't any more room for thought; her vision faded slowly to a deep, dark black.
