Chapter 587 - Suspicions and Surveillance

In his office, Parker stared at the brief report on the screen regarding the Hometree incident and the meeting between Maine and Quaritch, his brow deeply furrowed. His fingers tapped rhythmically against the desk in irritation.

"A scientific exploration team? A defense technology giant that doesn't take small orders?" Parker scoffed, muttering to the empty office. "Give me a break! That kind of corporate spin only works on a muscle-brained soldier like Miles!"

In his eyes, Maine and his group operated with absolute secrecy, possessed extraordinary technology, and harbored completely unknown motives. First, they traded weapon systems for a foothold, then they showcased mind-boggling spatial technology, and now they were dangling vague promises of "big business" to keep Quaritch hooked. Taken together, the sequence of events looked entirely like a meticulously engineered trap.

"Industrial espionage? Saboteurs sent by a competitor? Or... do they want something else entirely?" Parker's mind raced as he scrambled to piece the clues together. He suspected this group might be a vanguard sent by a rival enterprise that also coveted Pandora's resources, aiming to disrupt the RDA's operations, extract proprietary technical data, and harvest geological metrics.

"I have to report this situation to the Board of Directors on Earth," Parker decided. "At the same time, we need to step up surveillance on these 'Seekers of Knowledge' and gather as much intelligence on them as possible."

He pressed his comm-link and instructed his assistant, "Increase the frequency of drone patrols over the outpost sector. Log every vehicle and individual entering or exiting their mobile base. Make sure it's strictly classified—do not provoke a confrontation."

He knew very well that against a faction with such advanced technology, conventional surveillance might yield negligible results or even trigger a swift countermeasure. Yet, until he uncovered their true intentions and background, he could not act rashly, nor did he dare offend them openly. The frustrating sensation of knowing he was being watched without any power to stop it left Parker thoroughly anxious. With the arrival of these uninvited guests, the political climate on Pandora was becoming increasingly volatile.

Inside the Pioneer mobile base, Osiris had just concluded another round of technical consultations with Dr. Augustine. Grace left the laboratory carrying a folder bursting with notes and fresh insights, while Osiris immediately received a situation report from Lucy.

"My Lord, the RDA has intensified its drone surveillance along the outer perimeter of our outpost. Patrol frequency has spiked by fifty percent, and they have transitioned to more covert, high-altitude, long-endurance platforms," Lucy's voice transmitted over the comms, cold and clear. "Simultaneously, we intercepted encrypted communication fragments transmitted by Parker Selfridge to RDA corporate headquarters on Earth. The contents involve identity speculation and potential threat assessments regarding our division. He specifically flagged terms like 'commercial rivals' and 'technical espionage.'"

Osiris stepped up to the primary command console and brought up the surveillance feeds monitoring the outpost's surroundings. On the display, minuscule black specks belonging to the RDA drones occasionally flickered across the high altitude. Not a trace of surprise registered on his face.

"Predictable," Osiris said calmly. "Parker Selfridge is a shrewd businessman, not a soldier. Our presence and the capabilities we have displayed were bound to trigger his vigilance and suspicion. Maintain the current posture. There is no need to actively disrupt their surveillance, but ensure all counter-reconnaissance measures across our core sectors remain operational. Let them see exactly what we permit them to see. That is sufficient."

"Understood," Lucy replied.

At that moment, Maine patched in over an encrypted channel to deliver his report concerning the conference with Colonel Quaritch and Parker's subsequent reactions. "Colonel Quaritch demonstrated an intense appetite for the 'big business' framework, while Director Parker has conspicuously heightened his operational readiness," Maine summarized.

"Excellent," Osiris nodded slightly. "Maintain this calculated distance with Quaritch. Keep him expectant yet entirely in the dark regarding our true depth. This will serve our prospective operational maneuvers well. As for Parker—as long as he refrains from executing substantive hostile measures, leave him be for now. His suspicion and restrictions actually reinforce the narrative that we are not aligned with the RDA, which benefits the operations Rei and the others are conducting among the Na'vi."

He redirected his attention to the core objective: "Regarding the name 'Weyland-Yutani,' is there any fresh intelligence? Particularly within the RDA's central databanks or the files shared by Dr. Augustine?"

"We are currently expanding the query parameters, My Lord," David's voice patched into the feed; he was currently tasked with assisting in data filtration and analysis. "As of now, no direct operational footprints of this enterprise have been discovered within any localized official records on Pandora or the files shared by Dr. Augustine. However, within legacy RDA backup files concerning Earth's deep-space exploration regulations, we identified text fragments referencing the 'Weyland Act.' It appears to be part of an early legal framework regulating extra-solar archaeological excavations and contact with extraterrestrial sapient life, though the correlation remains tenuous."

"Maintain the watch," Osiris instructed. The name lingered like an ominous shadow. Even though there was currently no direct evidence linking it to Pandora, he would absolutely not lower his guard. His operational history within the Warhammer universe had taught him that any seemingly anomalous clue could be anchored to monumental peril.

He switched communication channels, establishing contact with Rei Ayanami, who was responsible for maintaining the link with Seze's cell. "What is the status on the Na'vi front?"

Rei's detached voice cut through the channel: "Seze reports that under Eytukan's leadership, the clan is migrating toward the Sacred Mountains, attempting to locate terrain suitable for Hometree to take root again. Morale is universally depressed, but the promise of 'return' has temporarily stabilized the collapsing situation. The influence of the militant faction led by Tsu'tey has waned, though it has not disappeared entirely. During the migration, a growing number of clan members have begun approaching Seze's small group in private to inquire about our division."

"Guide Seze. Ensure she understands that maintaining communication with us is the solitary path to guaranteeing the smooth return of Hometree," Osiris commanded. "Concurrently, you may channel select pieces of inconsequential data regarding RDA movements through her to the Na'vi—intelligence that is minor but sufficient to validate the accuracy of our information, thereby further cementing this relationship of dependence."

"Understood."

Terminating the transmission, Osiris stood alone before the primary control console, observing the multi-screen array displaying partitioned feeds: the hyper-detailed digital model of Hometree, the live surveillance footage of the outpost's outer perimeter, the macro-topographical map of the Pandoran jungle tracking the Na'vi migration route, and the real-time energy signatures radiating from the RDA base.

Everything was advancing in perfect alignment with his calculations. He was exploiting the internal fragmentation of the RDA; he was steering the structural rifts within Na'vi society; even Dr. Augustine had been seamlessly integrated into his surveillance and research apparatus. While the unexpected emergence of the "Weyland-Yutani" designation introduced an element of uncertainty, it had not yet disrupted his core strategic layout.

His current mandate was simply to sustain this exquisite equilibrium, deepen the systematic analysis of Pandora's ecology and Eywa's consciousness field, and await the moment the Na'vi established their so-called "new home." When that occurred, it would be time to introduce his "vaccine" and "cooperation" protocols—permanently resolving the Pandoran issue and bringing its resources and mysteries entirely under his absolute dominion.

Driven by the subterranean currents of competing factions, the Pandoran chessboard was marching step by step toward the endgame Osiris had designed. He resembled a patient fisherman who had cast a massive net across the waters, biding his time until the parameters matured to haul in the catch.
