Chapter 592 - Tracking

The proposition plunged both factions into a brief, reflective silence.

Cooperation? Just moments ago, they had been mobilizing to tear each other to pieces.

Maine spoke up at the opportune moment, his voice steady and persuasive. "The enemy of our enemy is not necessarily a friend, but they can at least serve as a temporary ally. The objective of this unknown threat is clearly to provoke a war between our factions. Allowing it to succeed would be our greatest failure. Joint action to eliminate this hidden hazard benefits us both."

Colonel Quaritch glanced at Maine , then looked back at the lingering shock and burning rage toward the cloaked killer visible on the faces of his men. Ultimately, he made the pragmatic choice. "Fine. A temporary truce. But it's strictly limited to dealing with this coward who won't show his face." He turned his gaze toward Eytukan. "Your people know the terrain and are experts at tracking. We'll supply the firepower and technical support. Find it, and take it out."

Eytukan quickly exchanged glances with several elders and warrior leaders beside him, before finally giving a firm, heavy nod. "Very well. The Omatikaya clan agrees to a temporary alliance."

A fragile, short-lived pact was thus forged under the brokering of the exploration team and the pressure of a common adversary.

Next came the specific operational plan.

Colonel Quaritch initially proposed deploying heavy firepower to conduct a blanket saturation bombardment of the suspected sector, but this was rejected simultaneously by both Eytukan and Maine .

"That would destroy vast swathes of the forest, and it would likely spook the quarry, allowing it to escape again," Eytukan objected.

Maine analyzed the situation from a tactical standpoint. "The target possesses high mobility and active cloaking. A large-scale bombardment is highly inefficient and offers no way to confirm a kill. What we need is a lean, joint strike team to handle tracking and surgical elimination."

This approach received consensus from all parties. Colonel Quaritch was the first to commit. Looking toward Eytukan, he spoke crisply, "My people will handle the firepower. Sergeant Reynolds will lead a full squad—eight men, outfitted with our best plasma rifles and armor. A gunship will also support the operation from the air; they know how to fight in the jungle."

Eytukan exchanged a look with Tsu'tey, then responded calmly, "The hunters of the Omatikaya know every breath of this land. Tsu'tey will lead five of our finest trackers. My daughter, Neytiri, will provide aerial support from above." He paused briefly, his gaze sweeping over Jake. "Jake the Dreamwalker will also go. He can bridge communication between both sides."

At this point, Colonel Quaritch shifted his attention to Maine , who had remained silent throughout the deliberation. "Maine, what about your people? That kind of cloaking tech... I'm afraid you guys are the only ones with a way to counter it."

Maine did not answer immediately. He raised a hand to lightly tap the comms unit behind his ear, requesting instructions via an encrypted channel. "My Lord, the parties have requested our participation in the joint operation."

Inside the main control room of the Pioneer, Osiris observed the real-time feed transmitted back from the field, weighing the options. The appearance of a third-party force certainly required attention, and this joint operation presented an excellent opportunity to observe the combat capabilities of each faction up close while harvesting data on the unknown biological entity.

"You may participate," Osiris's voice came through the encrypted link. "However, maintain your distance and focus primarily on technical support. Prioritize gathering data on that cloaked entity."

Having received explicit parameters, Maine took a step forward, meeting the gazes of the Colonel and Eytukan. "Four of us will join. Dorio and I will handle close-quarters support, Falco will provide electronic reconnaissance and anti-cloaking metrics, and Rebecca will handle heavy fire cover."

This arrangement brought a visible look of relief to Colonel Quaritch's face. He had witnessed the combat prowess of Maine's squad firsthand, but he valued their capability to handle unconventional threats even more. For his part, though Eytukan still maintained reservations regarding the technology of the Sky People, he understood that facing such an unknown adversary truly required the assistance of these "special Sky People."

Once the three parties reached a rapid consensus, a subtle shift occurred in the atmosphere of the river valley. The Na'vi hunters began inspecting their longbows and bone spears, conversing in low whispers in their native tongue about key tracking vectors. The soldiers of the Hellfire squad conducted final checks on their plasma rifles' energy cells and the seals of their armor, the gear on their tactical vests making light clinking sounds as they moved. The members of Maine's squad gathered together; Falco was calibrating his modified scanner, while Rebecca silently wiped down her formidable heavy weaponry.

Three teams representing vastly different cultures and technological levels had formed a temporary alliance under these extraordinary circumstances. Though they still maintained a vigilant distance from one another, the friction of drawn swords had finally eased.

Just as the contingent was finalizing preparations to deploy, Colonel Quaritch cut through the bustling crowd to find Maine, who was quietly briefing Dorio. Lowering his voice slightly, the Colonel spoke with a rare, subtle trace of a request that deviated from his usual hardened persona.

"Maine, during this run... I need your team to go all out. The tech on that thing... it's tricky." His eyes flicked to the device in Falco's hands, his implication unmistakable. He had a faint intuition that perhaps only these mysterious "Seekers of Knowledge" possessed adequate means to counter an active cloaking technology that completely shattered conventional metrics.

Maine looked toward the Pioneer, appearing to receive an instruction, before nodding. "We will, Colonel. Neutralizing an external threat aligns with our current interests." It was both a declaration of intent and a subtle hint regarding their true motivation for participating.

Inside the Pioneer, Osiris calmly monitored everything through the cameras and telemetry sensors outfitted on each squad member. The emergence of a third-party force was an anomaly, but utilizing it as a catalyst to prompt limited cooperation between the two sides—while exploiting the chance to observe and collect data on this unknown entity at close range—was proving to be a highly effective tactical play. His authorization for Maine's active participation was precisely rooted in this calculus.

The joint tracking team wasted no time resting. Following a brief equipment inspection and tactical briefing, guided by the Na'vi hunters, they followed the minute traces left by the cloaked attacker during its retreat, rapidly vanishing into the complex and perilous terrain upstream of the river valley.

A counter-hunt against an unknown apex predator had officially begun.

The joint tracking team advanced upstream along the river valley, the surrounding terrain progressively becoming more rugged and labyrinthine. Towering bioluminescent fungi resembled massive canopies, while twisted vines coiled between the precipitous cliff faces, forming succession after succession of natural barriers. Dappled light filtered through the fractures of the glowing canopy, casting shifting, unpredictable shadows across the moss-covered ground. Such an environment not only posed immense difficulties for tracking but also provided the perfect sanctuary for a cloaked hunter.

At the absolute vanguard of the formation, the Na'vi hunters demonstrated breathtaking tracking skills. Tsu'tey crouched low to the ground, his long fingers lightly brushing over an almost imperceptible depression on a patch of moss, before lifting his head to take a deep breath.

"It passed through here very recently," he said in a hushed tone to the companions behind him. "Its steps are light, but its weight is significant. And... I smell metal and energy."

His senses, forged through a thousand trials in the crucible of the jungle, were actually capable of capturing the faint, residual traces left by the cloaked entity's armor and weaponry.

Above them, Neytiri guided her Ikran in a slow, banking circle just beneath the canopy layer, her sharp golden eyes scanning the intricate terrain below. Jake followed closely behind her, every sensory faculty of his Avatar body dialed to its absolute limit, entirely focused on catching any anomalous sound or movement within the forest.
