Chapter 608 - Returning the Hometree

The looming shadow of the Predators' "Vengeance Hunt" acted like a Sword of Damocles hanging high over the Hell's Gate facility, forcing the RDA to modify its originally aggressive expansion strategies.

At a tactical session within the base command center, Colonel Quaritch, his face grim, slammed his fist onto the holographic map table, causing the blue glow to shudder violently.

"Contract our defensive perimeter! Hell!" He uttered the words through practically gritted teeth. "Those damn alien bastards are forcing us to turtle up like tortoises!"

Beside him, a staff officer counseled, "But we have no alternative. Until we map out the true capabilities of these new adversaries, engaging both the blue monkeys and the alien hunters simultaneously is tantamount to suicide."

Despite his profound resentment, Colonel Quaritch, having evaluated the potential hazards, had to concede to the harsh reality.

Consequently, the RDA's military operations contracted significantly. Patrol frequencies were slashed by 40%, and newly pioneered mining zones were temporarily mothballed. A massive volume of resources was urgently redeployed, prioritized toward reinforcing the core mining sectors and the defensive architecture of the base itself.

Newly erected energy pylons emitted low hums, surrounding critical facilities like invisible walls, while automated turrets rose from various strategic nodes like iron briars, their barrels glinting with a cold luster under the Pandoran sun. The entire base resembled a startled hedgehog, tensely bristling all its spines.

"Have Engineering accelerate the schedule!" Quaritch growled into the squad channel. "I want to see all defensive nodes fully online before the end of the month. As for those alien bastards—" He stared at the distant suspended mountains on the surveillance monitors, his eyes venomous. "Once we are prepared, they'll have hell to pay."

This strategic contraction objectively resulted in a drastic plunge in direct military pressure exerted by the RDA against the Na'vi clans. The comprehensive conflict that had originally sat on a hair-trigger lapsed into a bizarre, adversarial tranquility.

On the Na'vi front, though their vigilance against the Sky People had not receded in the slightest, they keenly perceived this shift. Led by Olo'eyktan Eytukan and Tsahìk Mo'at, the Omaticaya clan leveraged this rare breathing room to accelerate the process of seeking out a new home.

Finally, within an expansive river valley they designated as the "Land of Holy Chants," they located their ideal sanctuary. The area was lush with water and vegetation, sat far removed from the RDA's primary mining operations, and possessed an exceptionally fertile, energy-replete soil profile—rendering it seemingly perfect for the Hometree to take root and flourish once more.

Hope was rekindled, but it was immediately trailed by an indispensable dilemma that had to be resolved: how to retrieve the Hometree?

This critical weight fell once more onto the shoulders of Seze, who had previously maintained contact with the "unique Sky People." Flanked by several guards, she cautiously circumvented the RDA patrols, arriving once again at the outer perimeter of the Pioneer mobile base to transmit the pre-arranged contact signal.

Inside the briefing room of the mobile base, Seze stood facing Osiris, Dr. Grace Augustine, and Rei Ayanami, who served as the translator and liaison. Her expression was intricate, blending anticipation, vigilance, and an exceptionally subtle trace of entreaty.

"Sky Person... Osiris," Seze labored to articulate, utilizing stiff Universal Trade language terms she had acquired from Rei, supplemented by hand signs and conscious focus. "We... found new land. Suitable... Hometree growth. You promised... when new land found, return Sacred Tree."

A flash of gratification crossed Dr. Grace's eyes. She looked at Osiris, murmuring in a low tone, "Osiris, this is the first step toward reconstructing trust. They have honored their pledge and located a new habitat; we should fulfill our promise as well."

Osiris sat composedly, his expression serene. He had long been aware of the Na'vi's movements via his reconnaissance units; Seze's arrival was by no means an surprise to him.

He spoke slowly, his voice conveyed clearly through Rei's translation: "Warrior of the Omaticaya, we remember our covenant. The Hometree is entirely intact and can be returned to your people at any moment."

Hearing this, a brilliant ray of joy immediately bloomed across Seze's face, but Osiris's subsequent words caused her expression to tighten once more.

"However," Osiris shifted the trajectory of his discourse, his gaze peaceful yet carrying a definitive power, "returning the Sacred Tree is an act established upon a foundation of mutual trust. We have fulfilled our promise; now, I expect your people to display a corresponding level of sincerity."

He paused briefly before continuing, "We, the Seekers, harbor immense analytical interest and respect regarding the Na'vi history, culture, and your unique vector of connection to this land and Eywa. To augment our mutual understanding and preempt future misinterpretations and conflicts, I expect that following our return of the Hometree, Rei Ayanami, Asuka, and Shinji Ikari will be permitted to temporarily reside within your new clan for a window of one month as our observers and cultural emissaries. They will carry no weapons and will not interfere in your internal affairs; their presence is strictly for learning and observation."

This requirement caused Seze's expression to shift dramatically. Permitting Sky People—even these Sky People whose behaviors were quite unique—to reside long-term within the internal perimeter of the clan? This would undoubtedly trigger immense controversy and unrest.

"This... impossible!" Seze refused almost reflexively. "The clan will not agree to Sky People living among us! Even you!"

Osiris manifested no anger, merely stating placidly, "Seze, trust is a reciprocal dynamic. We have displayed our sincerity by protecting and promising to return your spiritual anchor. Now, it is your turn to manifest trust. These three youths are not warriors; they are more akin to... learners. Their presence may assist your people in perceiving more clearly that the Sky People are not a monolithic entity—that we differ from those who fell trees and plunder minerals under the RDA."

Grace chimed in to counsel her as well: "Seze, this is an opportunity. Letting the people within the clan see with their own eyes and interface with these different Sky People might shatter certain ingrained prejudices. Dr. Osiris and his group have genuinely conducted themselves differently from the rest of the Sky People all along, haven't they?"

Seze fell into a fierce internal conflict. She was well aware of how violently the hardline factions within the clan, spearheaded by Tsu'tey, would oppose this arrangement. But on the other hand, Osiris and his people had genuinely honored their covenant, preserved the Hometree, and provided assistance during the prior joint engagement against the cloaked hunter.

More critically, the Hometree was the soul of the clan; welcoming back the Sacred Tree would yield an incalculable effect toward stabilizing the hearts of the people, which were currently volatile due to the migration.

Following a prolonged silence, Seze took a deep breath, stating with difficulty, "I... cannot decide alone. I must return... to deliberate with Eytukan, Mo'at, and everyone in the clan." She lifted her head to look at Osiris. "But I can convey your requirement."

"Very well," Osiris nodded. "We await your response. Regardless of the outcome, the Hometree will be returned—that is our promise. But your decision will dictate the trajectory of our future relationship."

Seze departed with a complex disposition. A few days later, she transmitted word once more: following a fierce debate within the clan council, and particularly due to the insistence of Eytukan and Mo'at, the Omaticaya clan had ultimately and reluctantly agreed to Osiris's requirement.

They could retrieve the Hometree, and the clan would accept Rei Ayanami, Asuka, and Shinji Ikari as "observers" for a one-month duration. However, the external parties had to rigorously abide by the regulations of the clan and refrain from any actions that insulted Eywa or clan traditions.

The protocol was reached amidst immense friction. Yet, neither Osiris nor the Na'vi elders knew that an undercurrent was already quietly surging beneath this seemingly relaxed atmosphere.
