As dawn breaks, carefully constructed lies begin to unravel. Advait makes peace with Karan while hiding darker truths. Outside the walls, Reyan and Meera encounter the ghosts of Sanctuary's past—soldiers who survived the battle and want revenge. And Keshav's guilt drives him to a choice that will doom them all.
EARLY DAWN - SANCTUARY
The first light crept through the window. Gray. Dim. Not quite sunrise but close.
Advait woke slowly.
Nisha was beside him. Still asleep. Her breathing slow. Even. Peaceful.
He watched her for a moment. Her face relaxed. No tension. No burden. Just sleep.
He leaned over. Kissed her forehead gently. She stirred slightly but didn't wake.
Carefully, he slipped out of bed. Found his clothes. Dressed quietly. Buttoned his shirt. Pulled on his jacket.
Looked back at her. Still sleeping.
He moved to the door. Opened it slowly. Inch by inch. The hinges creaked slightly. He froze. Waited.
Nisha didn't wake.
He slipped out. Closed the door behind him with a soft click.
The corridor was empty. Early enough that most people were still sleeping. Guards on patrol but spaced out.
Advait walked. No particular destination. Just moving. Thinking.
He'd survived another day. Another night. Kept people alive. Kept systems running.
That had to be enough.
He turned a corner. Stopped.
Karan stood there. Leaning against the wall. Waiting.
Their eyes met.
"Morning," Karan said.
"Morning." Advait's voice was cautious. "You're up early."
"Couldn't sleep."
Awkward silence.
"I wanted to talk to you," Karan said finally.
"Okay."
"About what I said. After Rohan. About hating you. About wanting you dead."
Advait went still. "I understand why you—"
"Let me finish." Karan pushed off the wall. "I talked to Samir last night. He told me some things. About what happened. About who made what decisions."
"What did he tell you?"
"That it wasn't all you. That Nisha pushed. That she convinced you. That you were going to let the kid in but she made you see him as a threat." Karan looked at him. "Is that true?"
"Yes," he said quietly. "I was breaking. Ready to make an exception. Let him in despite the rules. But Nisha reminded me why the rules exist. Why I made them. Why they matter."
"So she convinced you to kill a child."
"She convinced me to protect everyone else. To stick to the system. To not make exceptions that could destroy everything we've built." Advait's voice was hollow. "But the choice was still mine. The order was still mine. I could've said no. I didn't."
Karan absorbed this. "So you're both responsible."
"Yes."
"And you both live with it."
"Every day."
Karan was quiet for a long moment. "I came here to forgive you. To say I understand. That it wasn't all your fault. That Nisha manipulated you."
"But?"
"But you just admitted you could've said no. You could've made a different choice. You didn't." Karan's jaw tightened. "So yeah. Nisha's responsible. But so are you. Maybe more. Because you're the leader. The final word. And you chose to pull that trigger."
"I know."
"Do you? Do you really understand what you did?"
"Yes." Advait's voice cracked slightly. "I see his face. Every night. Every time I close my eyes. I hear him begging. I watch him fall. I know exactly what I did."
Karan stared at him. Seeing the truth of it. The genuine pain.
"I can't forgive you," Karan said finally. "Not yet. Maybe not ever. But I won't kill you either. Won't let this destroy me. Because that's what you did wrong. You let fear destroy your humanity. And I won't make that mistake."
"Thank you. For that much."
"Don't thank me. Just..." Karan stopped. Started over. "Just do better. Next time someone needs help. When someone's begging. When someone's desperate. Do better."
"I'll try."
"Try harder."
Karan walked past him. Down the corridor. Gone.
Advait stood there. Alone.
A small smile crossed his face. Not happy. Not satisfied. Just... accomplished.
Like something had gone according to plan.
He turned. Kept walking.
The radio on his belt crackled.
"Sir? Sir, are you there?"
Advait grabbed it. "I'm here. What is it?"
"You need to come to the gate. Now. There's something—someone—outside."
"What do you mean someone?"
"Just come. Fast. You need to see this."
Advait started running.
Advait reached the gate. Breathing hard. The guard pointed.
"Out there. Someone's coming. Fast. Looks like they're running from something."
Advait looked. Saw a figure. Distant but getting closer. Running. Stumbling. Desperate.
"Who is it?"
"Can't tell yet. Too far."
They waited. Watching. The figure got closer. Clearer.
Advait recognized him. "That's Keshav. From the supply team. Open the gate!"
"Sir, he's alone. Where's the rest—"
"I SAID OPEN IT!"
NIGHT - THE HOUSE
Keshav burst through the trees. Branches whipping his face. Lungs burning. Legs screaming.
Behind him, groaning. Lots of it. Too much.
He'd fucked up. He knew it. The moment he'd opened that door. The moment he'd fired those shots.
He'd doomed them all.
But he couldn't stop. Couldn't think. Just had to move. Had to run. Had to get away from the house. From the memories. From the guilt.
He crashed through underbrush. Tripped on roots. Kept going.
The infected followed. Drawn by the noise. By the movement. By prey.
He didn't know where he was going. Didn't care. Just away. Just anywhere but there.
INSIDE THE HOUSE
Meera's eyes snapped open.
Gunshots. Two. Close.
She was on her feet immediately. Weapon up. Moving to the door.
"KESHAV?" she shouted.
No answer.
She opened the door to the main room. Saw the front door hanging open. Saw the darkness beyond.
Heard groaning. Getting closer.
"Fuck. FUCK!" She slammed the door shut. Barred it.
Ran to Reyan's room. Kicked the door open.
Reyan was already awake. Sitting up. Eyes wide. "What happened?"
"Keshav opened the door. Fired shots. Brought every infected in a mile radius here." She was checking her ammunition. "We need to move. Now."
"Where? They're outside!"
"Then we fight through!" She threw him his rifle. "Get up! We're leaving!"
They moved to the main room. Could hear them now. Scratching at the doors. At the windows. At the boards.
Dozens. Maybe more.
"Back door," Reyan said. "Through the kitchen."
They moved fast. Through the house. To the kitchen. To the back door.
Meera put her hand on the handle. "Ready?"
"No. But let's go anyway."
She opened it.
Three infected. Right there. Turning toward them.
Meera fired. Dropped two. The third lunged.
Reyan shot it. Headshot. It fell.
"RUN!"
They burst outside. Into the pre-dawn darkness. Into the trees.
Behind them, the house was surrounded. Infected pouring in through the open front door. Through the back. Searching. Finding nothing.
Reyan and Meera ran. Weaving between trees. Over logs. Through streams.
The infected followed. But slower. Disorganized. They'd gotten distance.
They ran for what felt like hours. Finally stopped. Collapsed behind a fallen tree. Gasping.
"We made it," Reyan managed.
"For now."
They sat there. Catching their breath. Listening for pursuit.
Nothing. Just forest sounds. Birds. Wind. Normal.
"What do we do now?" Reyan asked.
"We find our way back to Sanctuary. Hope they let us in. Hope—"
A gunshot.
Not from infected. From a rifle. Human.
The bullet hit the tree above their heads. Bark exploded.
"GET DOWN!" Reyan pulled Meera down.
More footsteps. From multiple directions. Surrounding them.
"DON'T DO ANYTHING STUPID!" a voice called out. Male. Authoritative. "WE HAVE YOU SURROUNDED! STAND UP! HANDS UP! NOW!"
Reyan and Meera looked at each other. No choice.
They stood slowly. Hands raised. Weapons dropped.
From the trees, soldiers emerged. Six. Maybe seven. All in military uniform. All carrying rifles.
All wearing dark-tinted goggles.
The one's who made it to the trucks during the battle.
They surrounded Reyan and Meera. Weapons trained. Fingers on triggers.
One of them—young, maybe twenty-five, face twisted with rage—stepped forward.
"You're from Sanctuary," he spat. Not a question. A statement.
"Yes," Reyan said carefully.
"Good." The soldier raised his rifle. Aimed at Reyan's head. "Then you die."
"WAIT!" Another soldier stepped forward. Older. Calmer. Authority in his voice. "Stand down, Rakesh."
"Sir, they're from—"
"I said stand down."
Rakesh lowered his weapon. Reluctantly. Glaring at Reyan.
The older soldier approached. Studied them. "You're from Sanctuary. The facility in Vaishali."
"Yes."
"How many people there?"
"I'm not telling you that."
"You will. Eventually. But let's start with something easier." The soldier tilted his head. "You know how that sanctuary came to exist? How it was built?"
"We were told it was a civilian takeover. That the military abandoned it."
"Abandoned?" The soldier laughed. Bitter. "Is that what they told you? That we just left? Walked away?"
"Yes."
"They lied." The soldier's voice went cold. "We didn't abandon it. We were driven out. And when we came back to reclaim it—when we tried to restore order—they slaughtered us."
Reyan's blood ran cold. "What?"
"Major Rathore. He led us back. Tried to retake the facility. Advait refused. We tried to breach the gate." The soldier's jaw tightened. "They killed our soldiers. Massacred."
"That's... that's not possible... But—"
"But what? You thought they won fairly? Thought it was self-defense?" The soldier stepped closer. "They murdered soldiers who were just following orders. Who were trying to help. Who were trying to protect civilians."
"I don't understand—"
"Of course you don't. Because Advait didn't tell you. Didn't tell you about the twenty-three soldiers who stayed with him. Who sided with him against their own brothers."
"There aren't any soldiers in Sanctuary," Meera said. "Not one."
The soldier went very still. "What?"
"There are no military personnel. None. Just civilians."
"The twenty-three who stayed. Who fought for Advait. Where are they?"
"I've never seen any soldiers. We've been there for weeks. There's no military presence."
The soldier's face went pale. Then red. "They killed them too. After the battle. After they'd served their purpose. Advait killed his own defenders."
"You don't know that—"
"WHERE ELSE WOULD THEY BE?" The soldier was shaking now. "Twenty-three trained soldiers. Armed. Integrated. They wouldn't just leave! They'd be there! Unless—" He stopped. Realization hitting. "Unless someone made sure they couldn't threaten him. Couldn't question him. Couldn't turn on him."
Reyan thought about it. About how there were no soldiers. How nobody talked about them. How the numbers didn't quite add up.
"How many people are in Sanctuary now?" the soldier asked.
"Sixty-three."
"When we attacked, there were over a hundred." "Which means they're all dead,"
The soldier closed his eyes. "That monster. That fucking monster."
IN THE WOODS - HIDDEN
Keshav crouched behind a thick tree. Watching. Listening.
He'd circled back. Followed the sounds. Found Reyan and Meera surrounded by soldiers.
His rifle was in his hands. One bullet left. He'd counted. Checked. Confirmed.
One bullet.
He could take the shot. Kill Reyan. Revenge for Manish. For getting him killed.
His hands were steady. Training taking over. He'd been a hunter before the outbreak. Knew how to wait. How to aim. How to breathe.
He raised the rifle. Looked through the scope.
Found Reyan. Center mass. Easy shot from this distance.
His finger moved to the trigger. Applied pressure. Almost there.
Then one of the soldiers moved. Walked right into his line of fire. Blocked the shot.
Keshav waited. Patient. The soldier would move. Had to.
Seconds passed. The soldier started to shift. Moving aside. Clearing the path.
Keshav's finger tightened. Breathing steady. Calm.
The soldier moved.
Clear shot. Perfect angle. One second. Two.
He fired.
The bullet flew.
Hit the soldier. Not Reyan. The man who'd just moved into the path. Just barely. Just enough.
The soldier went down. Clutching his side. Screaming.
"SNIPER!" Rakesh yelled. "EVERYONE DOWN!"
The soldiers scattered. Taking cover. Weapons up. Searching.
Keshav was already running. Crashing through underbrush. Away. Fast.
Behind him, chaos. Shouting. Soldiers searching. Firing randomly into the trees.
He kept running. Didn't look back. Didn't stop.
Just ran.
"WHO WAS THAT?" The leader screamed. "DO YOU HAVE OTHERS? DO YOU HAVE A TEAM?"
"No!" Reyan shouted. "I don't know who that was! We came alone!"
"BULLSHIT!"
"It's the truth! We're the only survivors from our team! Everyone else is dead!"
The leader looked at him. At his face. Saw the truth there.
"Rakesh. Take three others. Search the area. Find whoever fired that shot."
"Yes sir."
They ran. Into the trees. Weapons ready. Searching.
The leader turned back to Reyan and Meera. "You're lying. You have to be. Someone just shot my soldier."
"I don't know who it was. Maybe another survivor. Maybe someone from another group. But it wasn't us."
They searched for ten minutes. Found nothing. Keshav was gone. Vanished into the woods like a ghost.
"Forget it," the leader said finally. "We're exposed here. We need to move. Bring them."
Two soldiers grabbed Reyan and Meera. Started dragging them.
"Wait!" Reyan struggled. "Where are you taking us?"
"Our camp. You're going to tell us everything about Sanctuary. Its defenses. Its weaknesses. How to get inside."
"I won't—"
"You will. Or you'll watch your friend die. Slowly." The leader nodded at Meera. "Your choice."
Reyan looked at Meera. She looked back. Both thinking the same thing.
They had to escape. Had to get away. Had to warn Sanctuary.
But how?
Then Reyan had an idea. Insane. Risky. But maybe their only chance.
He looked at Meera. Nodded slightly. Once.
She frowned. Confused.
He nodded again. Toward the trees. Then touched his eyes. Then started walking.
Understanding dawned. She nodded back. Barely perceptible.
They were moved through the woods. Surrounded. No chance to run. Not yet.
Then Reyan saw something.
"Wait," Reyan said. "I see something."
"What?" The leader asked.
"Over there. I think it's—" Reyan started walking. Towards nothing. "I need to check. It might be—"
"Stop him," the leader ordered.
But Reyan was already moving. Walking faster.
"STOP! THERE'S MAYBE A GAZER! SHOOT IT!" The leader was screaming. "SOMEONE SHOOT THAT THING BEFORE—"
Too late.
Reyan was running now. Full speed. Toward nothing. Toward something only he could see.
"HE'S HALLUCINATING! GRAB HIM!"
Two soldiers ran after him. Chasing. Trying to catch up.
Meera saw her chance. The soldier holding her was distracted. Watching Reyan. Not paying attention.
She twisted. Hard. Bit down on his hand. Hard. Drew blood.
He screamed. Let go.
She ran. Opposite direction. Into the trees.
"SHOOT HER!" Rakesh raised his rifle. Fired.
The bullet hit a tree beside her. She kept running. Weaving. Making herself a hard target.
More shots. None connected.
She disappeared into the underbrush.
"FUCK!" The leader screamed. "AFTER HER! NOW!"
Three soldiers ran. Chasing. She had a head start but they were faster. Trained.
The leader turned to the others. "And him?"
"Still running, sir. Should we—"
"Let him go. The Gazer will kill him or he'll snap out of it eventually. Either way, he's not our priority." The leader was furious. "We lost them both. Two prisoners. Gone. Because you idiots can't even handle basic containment."
"Sir, we—"
"Save it. We're moving. Now. Before more infected show up. Before we lose anyone else."
They gathered. Started moving out. Leaving Reyan to his hallucination. Leaving Meera to run.
SEPARATELY
Reyan ran. Through trees. Over logs.
Finally he stopped. Bent over. Gasping. Confused.
He looked around. Saw trees. Saw forest. Saw infected in the distance.
No military.
Just him. Alone. Lost.
All of it had been an act.
A desperate performance to make the military think that he is hallucinating.
Meera ran. Soldiers behind her. Gaining. Getting closer.
She jumped over a stream. Slipped. Fell hard. Scrambled up. Kept moving.
A bullet hit the ground beside her. Too close.
She zigzagged. Made herself unpredictable. Harder to hit.
The soldiers were shouting. Coordinating. Trying to flank her.
She ran harder. Lungs burning. Legs screaming. But didn't stop.
Couldn't stop.
Finally, the sounds of pursuit faded. She'd lost them. Temporarily.
She kept running anyway. Putting distance. Making sure.
After another mile, she stopped. Collapsed against a tree. Gasping.
Safe. For now.
But alone. Lost. No idea where Sanctuary was. No idea where Reyan was.
Just alive. Barely.
DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS
They split up. Running. Hiding. Escaping.
Reyan dodged infected. Hid behind trees. Moved carefully. Quietly.
Found a stream. Followed it. Hoped it led somewhere. Anywhere.
Meera climbed a tree. Hid in the branches. Watched soldiers pass below. Didn't breathe. Didn't move.
They waited until it was safe. Then kept moving.
Both trying to find each other. Find their way. Find home.
Keshav ran. Away from everyone. From everything.
He'd missed. Shot the wrong person. Failed even at revenge.
He was useless. Worthless. Couldn't save anyone. Couldn't kill anyone. Couldn't do anything right.
He ran until early dawn.
Then he saw it. In the distance. Through the trees.
Walls. Concrete. Guard towers.
Sanctuary.
He'd found it. Somehow. Despite everything. He'd found his way back.
He started running. Toward the gate. Toward safety. Toward home.
SANCTUARY
Advait reached the gate. Breathing hard. The guard pointed.
"Out there. Someone's coming. Fast. Looks like they're running from something."
Advait looked. Saw a figure. Distant but getting closer. Running. Stumbling. Desperate.
"Who is it?"
"Can't tell yet. Too far."
They waited. Watching. The figure got closer. Clearer.
Advait recognized him. "That's Keshav. From the supply team. Open the gate!"
"Sir, he's alone. Where's the rest—"
"I SAID OPEN IT!"
The gate started opening. Slowly. Too slowly.
Keshav was almost there. Fifty meters. Forty. Thirty.
He was screaming. "HELP! PLEASE! THEY'RE COMING! THEY'RE RIGHT BEHIND ME!"
"Who's coming?" Advait shouted.
"MILI—" Keshav stopped running. Bent over. Gasping. Trying to breathe. Trying to speak.
"Keshav! Who's coming? What happened to the team?"
Keshav straightened up. Took a breath. "Mili—"
The gunshot was impossibly loud.
Keshav's head snapped back. Blood sprayed. He stumbled forward two steps.
Then fell. Face-first. Right at the gate. Right at Advait's feet.
Dead.
Advait stared. At the body. At the blood. At the hole in Keshav's skull.
Then looked up. Into the distance. Into the trees.
Saw nothing. Just forest. Just shadows.
But someone was out there. Someone with a rifle. Someone who'd just killed one of his people.
"CLOSE THE GATE!" Advait screamed. "CLOSE IT NOW! GET EVERYONE INSIDE! NOW!"
He ran. Away from the gate. Away from Keshav's body. Away from whoever was out there.
The gate slammed shut. Locking. Sealing.
Inside, people were running. Panicking. Wondering what was happening.
Advait kept running. To his office. To the radio. To sound the alarm.
Sanctuary was under threat.
And he had no idea from who.
Or how many.
Or what they wanted.
Just that someone out there was watching.
Waiting.
And had just fired the opening shot.
