The Magnara Grand Amphistad holds its breath.
Two hundred and twenty thousand people pack the tiers, forming a living wall of color and heat beneath the half-drawn Velarium. Banners from a dozen nations snap in the coastal wind. Drums roll through the upper decks. The entire bowl thrums like a struck bell that refuses to stop ringing.
On the central dais, the Oathmaster raises one hand.
"Silence."
The word rolls across the Colos-Lens, amplified through Spirit Muti until it reaches every ear at once. The first wave of noise breaks against it like surf against stone.
"Silence."
The banners still. The drums cut. The crowd's roar drops to a murmur, then a hush.
"Silence."
Two hundred and twenty thousand throats close at once.
The Amphistad becomes so quiet that the wind sounds loud.
The Oathmaster lowers his hand.
"Welcome," he says, his voice calm now as the entire bowl leans forward to hear him. "To Magnara. To the Mercy Colosseum. To the Trial by Mercy."
A tremor moves through the crowd, held back but ready to erupt.
"Eight teams stand before the world. Eight banners. One oath. You have all sworn it: no killing. Fight until you can no longer stand. Win with clarity, never cruelty."
His eyes sweep across the assembled competitors.
"The world watches for worthiness. Strength alone will not prove it."
He extends one arm toward the waiting ranks.
"Present your nations."
Light blooms above the dais.
One by one, the national banners rise, each accompanied by a herald's declaration that carries across the bowl.
"From Chun—where thought becomes machine, and machine becomes law."
The Chun banner unfurls in jade and silver.
"From Rajistan—where the flame listens to prayer, and the faithful never kneel before fear."
Saffron and gold rise beside it.
"From Britannia—where light is discipline, and every blade is a promise kept."
White and blue.
"From the Tsar Empire—where the mind remains quiet, and the quiet does not break."
Deep crimson and iron.
"From Vinlan—where the cold teaches, and the sea remembers."
Grey and green.
"From Germania—where steel is forged through doctrine, and order is the only god."
Black and gunmetal.
"From Americana—where the loud rise, and the bold refuse to sit down."
Bright colors flare above the dais.
"And from Janoah—"
The herald's voice rises, and the home crowd rises with it.
"—where we do not pray to gods. We build them."
The bowl detonates.
The Janoahian tiers stamp their decks until the stone beneath the Amphistad begins to shake.
A man steps onto the dais wearing a coat of deep steel-blue, a silver quill stitched over his heart.
President Johnny Joah.
Descendant of the founder whose statue stands in every major square of Magnara, holding a quill like a sword.
He allows the roar to wash over him before raising one hand.
The noise folds back into silence through respect alone.
"Seekers," he says, his voice even and carrying without strain. "You stand where exiles once stood with nothing but their hands and their will. Every ring of this city was built by people the world threw away."
His gaze travels across the competitors.
"So when you fight today, fight as they built—with purpose, with pride, and without apology."
He raises his fist.
"From Flame, We Rise."
The Amphistad answers with one voice.
"FROM FLAME, WE RISE!"
Joah steps back.
The Oathmaster raises his hand once more.
"The bracket is set. The opening bout of the Trial belongs to—"
The Colos-Lens flares.
Two names blaze in gold across the Velarium.
CRESCENT HALO VERSUS BOUNDLESS
KAI XANDER VERSUS CARLOS VERO
Inside the competitor tunnel, the Halo Team gathers closely around Kai one last time.
Lila bumps her shoulder against his.
"You've got this. I'll see you at four."
Their old joke.
She grins, and Kai returns it.
Aria steps close enough that only he can hear her beneath the rumble of the crowd.
"Earn that kiss."
The corner of Kai's mouth rises.
"Come get it," he breathes.
She smirks and steps back.
Rin places two fingers against Kai's wrist.
"Don't lose," he says. "Because I want to fight you most."
He smiles.
Rare. Real. Gone within a second.
Kai laughs beneath his breath. "No pressure."
William says nothing.
He gives Kai one nod.
It is enough.
Kai rolls his shoulders and reaches for Sun. His hand closes around the staff before he reconsiders.
He removes it from his back and holds it out toward Hanami.
She blinks. "You're not taking it?"
"Not for this one," Kai says. "He came to brawl. I'll meet him where he lives."
Hanami accepts the staff.
Kai turns toward the light.
The Mercy Deck stretches wide and pale beneath the open Velarium.
Across the arena, Carlos Vero rolls his neck and grins. He is broad and scarred, with both hands taped and no weapon in sight. The colors of Boundless fly behind him.
He has read the same room Kai has.
"No stick?" Carlos calls, delighted.
"No stick," Kai answers.
Carlos's grin widens.
"Oh, I like you."
The marshal raises one arm.
"Competitors ready."
Kai lowers his stance.
Carlos brings up his hands.
The marshal drops his arm.
"Begin!"
They meet at the center.
No blooms. No aura. No named techniques.
Only two bodies that know exactly what they are doing.
Carlos opens with a jab-cross, heavy and fast for a man his size. Kai slips the first punch, catches the second against his shoulder, and answers with a low kick that cracks into Carlos's thigh.
Carlos does not flinch.
He grins and steps forward, hunting for the clinch.
Kai lets him take it.
For half a second.
He frames against the collar tie, pivots off the centerline, and digs two short hooks into Carlos's ribs before sliding back out of reach.
Carlos laughs.
"Slippery."
He changes levels like a cat slipping beneath a fence and shoots for Kai's hips.
Kai sprawls.
Hips back. Weight down.
The takedown dies beneath him.
Carlos climbs up his body, attempting to circle toward his back. Kai peels away the grip, drives his hips outward, and twists free.
They separate, both breathing harder now.
A murmur passes through the crowd before swelling into something louder.
These are not the fireworks they came expecting.
This is better.
This is real.
They trade inside the pocket.
Carlos attacks the body, driving heavy hooks into Kai's sides hard enough to fold a lesser fighter. Kai absorbs two, rolls with the third, and sends a clean elbow over the top.
The strike splits the skin above Carlos's brow.
Carlos touches the blood and looks down at his fingers.
His grin widens.
"More."
They reset and collide again.
Carlos changes levels.
Kai denies him.
Kai whips a kick toward his head.
Carlos blocks it.
They crash into another clinch that becomes a knee-for-knee exchange at the center of the Mercy Deck, neither fighter surrendering an inch.
Kai's breath finds the count William drilled into him.
Four in.
Four held.
Four out.
His feet remain honest beneath him.
Carlos loads his right hand.
Kai feels the shift inside his shoulders before the fist begins moving.
Sight.
He does not name it. He does not need to.
Kai steps inside as Carlos throws the overhand right.
At that same instant, Kai fires his own.
Two right hands cut over the top.
Both connect.
Both fighters rock backward.
The entire bowl surges to its feet.
