Chapter 181 - Chapter 2: The Prisoners

The wind cut through the mountain pass like a blade.

A09 stood at the edge of the cliff, her dark grey uniform pulled tight against the cold, her mask hiding the expression on her face. At her feet lay the remains of what had been Alpha-class monsters—twisted bodies, shattered armor, black blood freezing in the snow. She had killed them without breaking stride.

Alpha level, she thought. No. Barely strong.

She looked up.

The prison rose before her—a perfect cube of black metal, its surface seamless, its edges sharp against the grey sky. The material was five hundred times stronger than anything the old world had produced. It had been designed to hold one prisoner. One being. For eternity.

She walked toward it.

The guards—what remained of them—lay scattered across the approach, their white masks cracked, their bodies broken. She hadn't killed them. Someone else had. Someone who had been waiting for this moment for a very long time.

A09 stopped before the massive door. She raised her hand, scanned the card she'd taken from Absolute 2 Eva's desk, and watched as the locks disengaged one by one.

The door hissed open.

Steam billowed out—not warm, not cold, just old. Air that had been sealed for decades, finally released.

Absolute Architect 5 walked out.

He was tall. His mask was still in place—dark grey, unmarked, expressionless. His clothes were in bad shape, torn and faded, but his posture was straight, his steps steady. He looked like a man who hadn't spent decades in prison at all. He looked like a man who had been waiting.

"Wolfen Welfric," A09 said.

She didn't greet him. Didn't bow. Just stated the name like a fact.

"Alive." She continued, her voice flat, professional. "He killed all the Superior Architects. First the Boars, then the rest—the ones who were being controlled by a hybrid named Jenny Damber. Damber is dead."

Absolute 5 listened.

"Wolfen was infected with the Thantos-39 virus. He survived. He was temporarily sent to another dimension—a universe where he had to fight constantly just to stay alive." She paused. "He is currently living with a group of hybrids. Among them are Absolute 2's clone, the former Superior 1, and the former Superior 4."

She could feel his attention sharpen.

"Absolute 2's sister is dead." The words came out flat, but something in them caught. "Lily Rostova. She destroyed eighty percent of the Architect facilities. She stopped the Thantos-39 virus from spreading—if my theory is correct, the universe where Welfric was sent was infected by it. She prevented that here."

She looked at the snow, at the bodies, at the sky.

"She saved two million humans. She killed over thirty thousand Architects. She was known as the Monster Queen, and she lived up to the name." A pause. "She died from her injuries, but her death was already timed. The virus was killing her regardless. In short—" She met his mask. "You missed a lot, sir."

Absolute 5 was silent for a long moment. The wind howled around them. The snow drifted across the bodies at his feet.

"I truly have," he said.

Kilauea Volcano Facility

The facility was built at a safe distance from the volcano's rim—close enough to monitor, far enough to survive an eruption. But safety was relative. The monsters had been attacking for weeks, their numbers growing, their coordination improving. Energy plants had been destroyed. Perimeter walls had been breached. The Architects inside were panicking.

Absolute 7 watched the monitors.

The volcano was covered in ice.

Not snow—ice. Thick sheets of it, spreading down the slopes, freezing the vents, sealing the crater. The temperature on the monitors had dropped sixty degrees in the last hour. The facility's systems were failing.

"The prisoner," someone said behind her. "She's out."

Absolute 7 didn't turn.

She watched the main camera feed instead. A figure stood at the edge of the crater, white against the grey sky. Her hair was long, pale, moving in a wind that didn't seem to touch anything else. Her skin was pale, almost translucent. She wore simple white clothes—thin, impractical, as if she didn't feel the cold.

Selene Kane.

The strongest Alpha on the planet. Imprisoned for decades, buried under the volcano, held by chains that were supposed to be unbreakable. Now free.

The clouds above her were turning black.

Absolute 7 walked to the door. She stepped outside, into the cold, and began the long walk toward the crater. The wind bit through her uniform. The ice cracked beneath her boots.

Selene Kane smiled as she saw her coming.

From miles away, across the frozen slope, she smiled.

A09 had been an Alpha all along.

She had hidden it well—suppressed her abilities, kept her pulse low, never revealed what she truly was. Absolute 2 had known. Dave had suspected. But no one else.

Now, standing beside Absolute 5 as he looked out at the ruined world, she let her mask stay on.

"Where to first?" she asked.

Absolute 5 was silent for a long moment. Then he began to walk.

"Let's see what my creation has been up to."

A09 followed.

Behind them, the prison door swung shut, empty now, its purpose fulfilled. The wind covered the bodies in snow. The mountain returned to silence.

The prisoners were free.

And the world had no idea
