Chapter 38 - Academy Conflict

Flandre walked up to the assembled students and stopped. His characteristic husky voice, carrying a magnetic quality, sounded:

"This year is very good. We have five more little monsters joining us. I, Flandre, headmaster of Shrek Academy, welcome your arrival. Later, each of you will pay one hundred gold coins to Teacher Li in charge of finances. Little Oscar."

"Headmaster." Oscar stepped forward. He seemed very respectful, even somewhat admiring, toward Flandre.

Flandre said, "Five new junior students have arrived. Later, you will explain the rules of the academy to them. Then, go back and rest, and restore yourselves to the best possible condition. Today's first class will begin tonight. You, Ning Rongrong, and Ning Yueyue are exceptions. The three of you come with me."

Oscar's expression immediately fell. Reluctantly, unwillingly, he was retained by Flandre. When he saw Ning Rongrong walk to his side, his expression lightened a little.

Flandre waved his hand. "The others may go rest. Remember, reach your optimal state before nightfall. Don't say I didn't warn you. The teaching here is different from other places; you may even face danger."

Ning Rongrong whispered to Qian Renyue, "Sister, Oscar said the headmaster holds grudges. He wouldn't deliberately target us to take revenge for his own disciples, would he?"

Qian Renyue patted Ning Rongrong's hand. "Don't worry."

Flandre twitched at the corner of his mouth. "I can hear you!"

Flandre said to Ning Rongrong, "Everyone has their own cultivation method. Different Spirit Weapons require different cultivation approaches. On Douluo Continent, almost no two Spirit Weapons are the same. Therefore, what the academy teaches you isn't just how to cultivate your Spirit Weapon, but how to use it, how to preserve yourself better in future battles, and how to assist your teammates."

Tang San felt Flandre's words were somewhat familiar. Thinking carefully, he realized Master had said something similar, though Master's explanation had been more detailed.

Flandre continued, "The three of you are all support-class Soul Masters. One adds attributes, another has a food-type Spirit Weapon, and Ning Yueyue, you provide healing for your teammates. Support-class Soul Masters like you need protection from companions both on the battlefield and off; otherwise, survival is difficult. Oscar, tell me, as a support-class Soul Master, how can you best protect yourself on the battlefield?"

Oscar replied without hesitation, "Stay behind allies as much as possible, use all available terrain and buildings to avoid risks, and keep as far from dangerous areas as possible."

Flandre nodded. "Correct. But there's one thing you didn't mention. As a support-class Soul Master, the ability to retreat is essential. A support-class Soul Master who can't escape is not a good Soul Master. And what is needed to escape? Stamina. Although you are Soul Masters with spirit power assisting you, your physical abilities are slightly stronger than ordinary people. But the opponents you may face are other battle Soul Masters. Therefore, as a support-class Soul Master, you also need to train your physical stamina. At a critical moment, one extra step could save your life."

Oscar understood Flandre well. Listening to the headmaster speaking so formally, he couldn't help but smile bitterly inside. He knew—there was no avoiding it today.

Sure enough, after his long speech, Flandre nodded to the three of them. "Today's lesson is physical training. Starting now, run twenty laps around the village. If you haven't returned by lunchtime, you won't get lunch. You may use your Spirit Weapons for assistance. Now, go. Oscar, you lead the way."

Qian Renyue asked, "And after we finish running?"

Flandre glanced at Qian Renyue. Although he didn't know how she had injured his student today, what he said earlier clearly didn't apply to her. Unexpectedly, she didn't argue or refuse to run, so Flandre's expression softened slightly. "After running, you can arrange your own time freely. You can also watch how others attend class."

Qian Renyue nodded and ran out without hesitation. Ning Rongrong quickly followed. Oscar looked resentfully at Tang San and the others watching, then followed.

Shrek Academy's village was small. Compared to running the back mountains of the Seven Treasure Glazed Realm Sect every day, twenty laps around the village was really simple for Qian Renyue and Ning Rongrong.

Oscar caught up with Ning Rongrong and smiled, "Rongrong, I said when we left that this is an impossible task. But don't worry, I won't let you go hungry."

Then Oscar used his Spirit Weapon to create a sausage and handed it to Ning Rongrong. "My first soul skill, Recover Sausage, can heal injuries and restore spirit power and stamina. Don't worry. With my sausage, we can definitely finish the task today without starving."

Ning Rongrong had no favorable impression of this academy man. She politely smiled at Oscar, "Thanks, you eat it; I won't take it." After that, she ignored him completely, running quickly with Qian Renyue without looking back.

For six years, through cold and heat, Ning Rongrong and Qian Renyue had never slacked in training, plus many days of nourishing their meridians with heavenly materials. Not just twenty laps—another twenty laps would be no problem for them.

As night fell, Flandre, the four-eyed cat-eagle headmaster of Shrek Academy, stood on the large playground, looking at all eight students in front of him.

Although Flandre didn't send a support-class Soul Master to heal Qian Renyue and Ning Rongrong, he had a food-type teacher give them some treatment. He also gritted his teeth and applied some long-preserved herbs to them, leaving them slightly pale but still standing.

Ma Hongjun looked at Qian Renyue and Ning Rongrong with fear and caution. Dai Mubai's gaze was filled with anger and hatred.

Flandre asked Oscar coldly, "Oscar, have you all finished running?"

Oscar coughed and nodded. "Headmaster, I finished running."

Flandre snorted coldly. "I asked all of you, not just you."

Oscar turned to Ning Rongrong. She looked back, confused.

Oscar gritted his teeth and nodded. "Yes, we all finished."

"Good. Oscar, I didn't expect you to have such a spirit of camaraderie. Come over here." Flandre pointed to a spot in front of him.

He slowly raised his right hand and lightly patted Oscar on the shoulder. "I admire your spirit of camaraderie. Since that's the case, run another twenty laps. Let me see how deep your camaraderie truly is. Don't finish, and you won't eat. I've sealed your spirit power, so don't try to remove it. Go."

Oscar said nothing, nodded silently, and turned to run outside.
