Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: The Ghost-Spider's baptism

Su Yi arrived on the bridge to find chaos. Dr. Connors, fully devolved into the reptilian Professor Lizard, was a nearly three-meter-tall force of destruction. Vehicles were overturned and twisted, and terrified people had abandoned their cars to flee. The massive traffic jam was a disaster zone.

Fortunately, the Lizard's initial, primal target was Nels, the assistant responsible for hijacking his work. The Lizard was tearing up the bridge, throwing cars and concrete barriers in frustration.

Su Yi saw a vehicle, still containing a frightened driver, being hoisted high above the railing, destined for the dark river below. He knew he couldn't wait for Gwen.

Using the flowing capabilities of his Symbiote Suit, Su Yi shot thick, black webs, stabilizing and catching the car mid-air before gently lowering it.

The Lizard noticed the intervention of the black-suited figure but, driven by blind rage, merely let out a monstrous roar and redoubled his destructive efforts to find his true target, Nels.

As Su Yi finished rescuing several stranded individuals, Gwen finally swung onto the scene, the stark white of her Ghost-Spider suit a sharp contrast to the dark chaos.

"I'm here! What should I do?" she asked, her voice slightly breathless but eager.

"Save the people, and then block that monster!" Su Yi commanded, already moving to clear the remaining civilian obstacles.

Gwen, feeling the rush of her first mission, immediately engaged the threat. "Hey, you overgrown gecko! You can't continue this destruction!"

The Lizard, already consumed by instinct, reacted violently to the new challenge, immediately counterattacking. Gwen dodged and blocked, but the sheer size and brute strength of the monster—nearly three meters of mutated muscle—was staggering. She felt immense power radiating from the blows she managed to deflect.

A direct strength comparison is a losing game, Gwen instantly realized. Her intelligence kicked in, and she began to rely on speed and agility, honing her fighting style on the fly.

Moments later, Captain George Stacy arrived with a detachment of officers. George stared at the sight—a massive Lizard-man battling a mysterious, white-and-pink costumed hero, all while the black-suited Spider-Bully calmly helped stranded civilians.

"What the hell is this?" George muttered, disbelieving his eyes.

He saw the Spider-Bully as the primary source of disruption, viewing both masked figures as anarchists.

"Hands up, you are surrounded!" George yelled, pointing his weapon at Su Yi.

Su Yi paused his rescue work, looking at his future father-in-law. "Chief George, this creature is not something you can handle. You should let us deal with it."

George's police training overruled his personal, grudging respect for the man who saved his daughter. "This is our duty! This falls under our jurisdiction! I'll say it again: put your hands up and surrender immediately! Otherwise, you'll be our target."

Su Yi sighed, completely unmoved. "You can try. You know from those bandits I caught that bullets are ineffective against me. I assure you, they are ineffective against both of us."

George didn't believe the arrogance. He immediately emptied his pistol clip at Su Yi's chest. Clang, clang, clang. The bullets simply splattered off the Symbiote armor, falling harmlessly to the deck of the bridge. Su Yi didn't even flinch.

George was speechless. His conventional methods were utterly useless.

"Chief George," Su Yi said patiently, "there are always some things beyond your comprehension, and some things beyond your capability. Leave this to more capable people."

The confrontation was interrupted by a desperate cry.

"Help!"

Su Yi spun around. The Lizard, realizing the battle was stalled, seized the opportunity to throw several more cars toward the river in a wide, sweeping arc to clear his escape path. Crucially, there were still people inside them.

Gwen saw the vehicles hurtling toward the water. Her heroic instinct took over, but she instantly calculated the danger. She could only reach two of the five cars in time. She shouted for backup.

Su Yi didn't hesitate. He Teleported to the edge of the bridge. The Symbiote Suit erupted, turning into five powerful tentacles. He snagged the three furthest cars, while Gwen simultaneously grabbed the remaining two, one in each hand.

"Not being able to fly is a hassle," Su Yi thought, momentarily missing the raw utility of flight.

Working in perfect, wordless coordination, the two heroes saved every car and every person inside. Passersby erupted in cheers and thanks.

The Lizard, however, had vanished into the cityscape.

George led his men toward the costumed figures. The monster had escaped, so they could at least apprehend these two "vigilantes."

But before George could issue an order, Su Yi grabbed Gwen and, using his Teleportation ability, vanished with her. They instantly reappeared in Gwen's locked bedroom.

The Symbiote receded into a sleek wrist-cuff, and Gwen was back in her civilian clothes. Her exhilaration was replaced by profound disappointment.

She immediately hugged Su Yi. "I'm sorry, I failed. I let him get away."

"I also messed up," she continued, self-reproach heavy in her voice. "I didn't realize my Symbiote suit could be used to grab multiple targets like you did. If I hadn't troubled you, maybe you could have caught him."

"You said I was destined to be a Superhero, but I failed my first mission."

Su Yi patted her back gently. "It's okay, Gwen. You did exceptionally well. You were brilliant."

"Gwen," he stressed, holding her at arm's length. "Even the greatest heroes don't always win on the first try. They constantly face new enemies, emergencies, and situations beyond their immediate control."

"You made the absolutely correct judgment: when you realized you couldn't save everyone alone, you called for help. That is the mark of a true hero—knowing when to rely on your team. We saved every single person."

"Defeating the monster is only one part of the job. Saving lives is the priority."

Gwen's mood lifted instantly. "Thank you for comforting me, Su."

As they were talking, Helen Stacy passed by and heard voices inside the supposedly empty room.

"Gwen, is there someone in your room? I thought I heard you talking to someone."

Gwen, quick-witted, immediately called out, "I'm on the phone with Su, Mom! We're talking about the monster on the bridge!"

"Oh, I'm so sorry for disturbing you two," Helen replied, immediately moving on. "Please continue your conversation."

Gwen smiled triumphantly, clearly enjoying the deception. "Su, can you stay?"

"I can stay for a little while," Su Yi whispered, kissing her. "Your father will be back soon, and I don't want him to catch me."

"A little while is enough. Thank you, Su."

The Ghost-Spider has made her debut, saved lives, and secured a temporary reprieve from her father's scrutiny, while The Lizard has escaped.
