Chapter 91 - New Home

Part 91

The house feels too quiet.

The kind of quiet that hums in the walls and seeps into your bones. Aura stands in the middle of the living room, staring at the empty space that used to mean comfort and now feels like a confession.

Every object looks different tonight: the worn couch, the soft lamp light, the faint smell of dust and rain. She catches her reflection in the window—pale, exhausted, trembling—and almost doesn't recognize herself.

"He's safe," she tells the silence. "He's away from them now."

Her voice sounds wrong in her ears, too soft, too deliberate. She presses her palms to her temples, closing her eyes as the memories replay: his face in the café light, the way his voice cracked when he said her name.

Aura sinks into the armchair, the exhaustion catching up to her. The satisfaction she expected to feel never comes. Instead, a slow unease curls through her stomach—because what if he hates her for this? What if he never forgives her?

"No," she whispers. "He'll understand. He always does."

She starts pacing, glancing toward the window every few seconds, half expecting headlights to appear, someone to come take him back before he can understand what she's done for him.

Her thoughts splinter, looping through the same sentence again and again: I did this because I love him.

And then, quietly—

But what if love isn't enough?

The night stretches long and restless. Aura doesn't sleep. She can't. Every sound outside—the wind, a distant car, an owl—feels like a threat to what she's built.

Somewhere deep inside, a new fear stirs.

Because like never before, she realizes she doesn't just want him to stay.

She needs him to.
