"Zane, do you know those two?" Condy asked. He saw Zane watching two young men who were arguing in the airport.
"No," Zane said with a friendly smile. "Not yet."
He didn't know them, but he just had a good feeling. In his old life, the whole world knew their names. The older brother was Christopher Nolan, a future director of amazing movies like The Dark Knight. The younger one was Jonathan Nolan, a brilliant writer. They were a team that would one day make a new kind of blockbuster.
"Then why are you staring?" Condy asked, confused. "They just look like a couple of college kids."
Zane just gave him a friendly shrug. He walked right over to the brothers, a warm, confident smile on his face.
"Excuse me," Zane said.
Christopher Nolan turned, looking a little confused.
"Hi," Zane said, holding out a hand. "I'm Zane Blackwood. I own a movie company in Hollywood called Wald Pictures. I couldn't help but overhear you talking about making movies. You're both clearly really passionate about it."
He offered them a business card. "I'm always looking for new, talented people. If you ever have a project or a script you're dreaming about, I'd be really interested in taking a look. I'm not a liar," he added, seeing the doubt in their eyes. "You can call the number on the card to check."
The Nolan brothers were stunned. This person, who looked their age, owned a Hollywood studio?
They still looked unsure, so Victor and Condy came over.
"He's the boss," Victor said with a smile.
Their doubt turned into pure shock.
They talked for a few minutes. Zane learned that Christopher was a student in London, working on his very first tiny-budget movie called Following.
"That's amazing," Zane said, his voice full of real interest. "When you finish your film, send it to me. If it's as good as I bet it is, my company can help you show it in the United States."
The brothers were so excited. It was almost impossible to get a foot in the door in Hollywood. And this studio owner had just appeared out of nowhere and offered them a direct line. They happily swapped numbers and promised to get in touch.
...
Back in Los Angeles, Zane was full of energy. He needed to raise money for his Spider-Man movie, and he was ready to get to work. He called a big meeting with Victor and the new movie-idea team at Wald Pictures.
"I want to get a bunch of new movies started, fast!" Zane announced. His voice was so full of excitement that no one could doubt him. "Our goal is to make four great, low-cost movies as quickly as we can. I'm not looking for boring projects; I'm looking for movies that I know people will love."
He laid out his vision, full of passion for good stories.
"First," he said, "a smart, scary movie. A teenage girl who flips the script on an older bad guy. Think 'Little Red Riding Hood, but she's the wolf.' It'll be tense and cheap to film." (This was his idea for Hard Candy).
"Second, a teen comedy that's also sweet. A funny, smart girl gets pregnant and decides to handle it her own way. It has to feel real and be all about the characters." (This was his idea for Juno).
"Third, a simple, really scary horror movie. A group of friends gets lost in the woods and is hunted by a scary family. Just pure, exciting horror that people love to watch." (This was his idea for Wrong Turn).
He paused, letting his team write down the ideas. Then he smiled.
"And finally, a ghost story. But it can't be just any ghost story. It needs a twist at the end. A huge, surprising twist that makes you want to watch the whole movie all over again. This is the one I'm most excited about." (This was his idea for The Sixth Sense).
The team was stunned. In just ten minutes, their new boss had given them four amazing, smart, and fun movie ideas. He hadn't written a single page, but he'd given them the core ideas that he just knew would be huge hits.
He thought about the movies. Wrong Turn and Hard Candy felt like safe, smart movies that would be easy to make. Juno... that one felt special. He had a gut feeling it could be a huge, surprise home run. But The Sixth Sense... that was the real prize. It would cost more to make, but he just knew it could be a massive hit all over the world and even win awards.
"I don't have the money for The Sixth Sense just yet," he told Victor after the meeting. "But let's start planning for it. For now, focus on the other three. Go find me those scripts!"
Zane left his team buzzing with excitement. He had set a whole new plan in motion. He wasn't a director or a writer. He was a producer, a team builder, and a man who was excited to build his company, one great idea at a time.
