On the evening of May 28th, it was finally time!
After lots of ads and waiting, the second season of "SpongeBob SquarePants" was on TV.
All across America, families were excited. Kids, parents, and even grandparents were waiting to watch.
At James Shawn's house, the mood was extra lively. James, his sister Lily, his mom, and his kind Aunt Alice were all sitting around the dinner table, ready to eat.
They also had guests. James's girlfriend, Kelly, was there with her little brother, Ordos.
Aunt Alice, sitting in her wheelchair, really liked Kelly. She was a super-smart student at a top college and had a very sweet personality.
"Can we start eating?" Lily asked, wiggling in her chair.
"Yes!" Ordos agreed. "In less than 10 minutes, 'SpongeBob' is on! If I miss it, my friends Lloyd and Dorsinger will laugh at me at school tomorrow."
"Ordos, be quiet. Don't be rude," his big sister Kelly scolded him. But when she looked at James's sister, Lily, her face softened into a warm smile. "Lily, it's okay. We can start eating soon. And we can even eat while we watch." She gently stroked Lily's hair.
"Sister is playing favorites!" Ordos grumbled.
The kids' bickering made all the grown-ups smile.
Ding dong!
The doorbell rang.
"Oh, that must be Zane!" James said, jumping up. "Everyone, please sit. I'll get the door."
It was Zane! He was a good friend of the family, and Aunt Alice always treated him like a son, so he would never miss a dinner invitation.
He also came with lots of gifts for Lily and Ordos.
"Wow!" Lily cheered, her eyes wide. "Look! It's the limited-edition SpongeBob toy! And Patrick! And Sandy! This is so great! Thank you, Brother Zane!"
Ordos, who was usually a little rascal, was overjoyed, too. The toys Zane brought were special ones you couldn't just find in any store. To kids, they were treasures.
"What's this?" Ordos suddenly asked, holding up a new doll. "Brother Zane, what kind of doll is this? A piggy doll? I've never seen it before!"
Kelly, standing nearby, was also curious. "James, I saw these piggy dolls in your store yesterday. What cartoon are they from?"
Zane and James just looked at each other and smiled a secret smile.
"I think it's better if we don't say," Zane said, his eyes twinkling. "You'll just have to find out for yourselves when you watch TV later."
Since Zane said so, everyone had to drop it. They all started eating their yummy dinner and turned on the TV to the UPN channel.
Right on time, "SpongeBob SquarePants" season two began.
The familiar, fun music started, and SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward all appeared. The funny, silly scenes made everyone laugh and feel that happy, underwater fun all over again.
"Awesome!" "It's still my favorite!" "Sandy is so cute!" "Hahaha, I have so many special SpongeBob dolls," Ordos bragged. "When I tell Lloyd and Dorsinger tomorrow, they'll be so jealous."
The two kids were so excited, they almost forgot to eat. In fact, even the grown-ups, like Kelly, were super excited, too.
Happy times always pass by quickly.
A little over twenty minutes later, the first new episode of "SpongeBob" came to an end.
"My dearest, dearest children," SpongeBob's voice said from the TV, "it's time to say goodbye again. But don't be sad! I have some good news: our ocean family has a new friend, and it's the adorable... Peppa Pig!"
Peppa Pig?
Kelly, her family, and millions of other viewers all over America were confused.
"What is this?" one dad said, scratching his head.
Right after "SpongeBob" finished, there were no commercials. The newest cartoon from Zane's animation studio, "Peppa Pig," started right away!
And, because it was the very first day, they showed five episodes in a row!
Peppa Pig—a little pig who loves jumping in muddy puddles, eating chocolate cake, and dressing up like a fairy—appeared on the screen.
Her little brother George, Daddy Pig, and Mummy Pig all appeared in the story.
"Wow! A cute little pig!" Lily's eyes instantly sparkled.
Suddenly, that "boring" piggy doll that Ordos was holding became a very precious treasure.
It was funny. American TV watchers could be a little peculiar. They didn't really like Teletubbies, thinking it was too childish. But Peppa Pig, which was also a very simple show, was a show they loved.
Maybe it was just because Peppa and George were so cute!
In short, "Peppa Pig" was just as popular as "SpongeBob" had been when it first came out.
And, just as Zane had hoped, the very next day, the "SpongeBob's House" toy stores were swarmed with people, all trying to buy a Peppa Pig doll.
