Karl's POV
The forest shifts around me, just slightly, like someone's playing with the focus on a camera. Moonlight catches on the trees in ways that don't make sense, bending and warping until I have to blink hard to clear my vision.
Heat crawls up my spine like liquid fire, settling into my skull and making my heartbeat thunder in my ears. My wolf growls somewhere deep inside me, but the sound feels muffled, distant, like he's trapped behind thick glass.
My chest constricts. I've never experienced this kind of separation from him before.
He's always there, a constant presence beneath my skin, his instincts flowing seamlessly with mine. But now there's only silence. Not gone, exactly, but unreachable. I push against our connection, trying to bridge the gap, but it's like shouting into empty air.
Something is seriously wrong.
